Famous nian gao, super sinful. The nian gao filling is thick, gooey, and mildly sweet; sandwiched between yam and sweet potato, encrusted in a crunchy batter. Overall it's very starchy and sinful, and also oily. Usually served hot as it's made fresh.

The noodle used is pretty common as those yellow mee that you would see elsewhere, but with less alkaline taste which comes as a good news to me. The plate of noodle is then garnished with assorted savoury stuffed fishcakes and bean curds that have been boiled earlier on and are thus, thoroughly infused with the curry gravy. The whole fare is then drenched with some curry soup before served with inhouse sambal which is quite delish and not too spicy. Overall, it could be quite oily but nevertheless, still remains as a humble and delectable simple dish.

The bowl of noodles is being drenched with sufficient condiments like dark and soya sauce, before being topped off with some chopped spring onions and garnished with the sides like meatballs alike. I actually quite enjoy this humble bowl especially the noodles that they used, is quite springy and doesn’t have the acid boric taste. Wonder is that the noode produced in Kampar. Not bad.

After feeling a bit bored going to the same mall for lunch almost every week, that day, we decided to have it at the nearby famous eatery spot, Imbi area where eventually we find a nice spot at Mei Sin coffee shop. This place seems to be quite popular among city office workers in the Golden Triangle. There are few stalls that you can choose to have your lunch, say this plate of decent Chicken Rice. It comes in a combo; a plate of white rice with the sliced chicken meat at another plate. The chicken meat is actually pretty juicy and tenderly delish. I suppose it is quite fresh and have parboiled for just a right period of time that helps to retain the silkiness and sweetness of it.

If were to compared with the Wan Tan Mee served at Mei Sin Café, I think this simple plate of chicken noodles fares better. It wasn’t the normal dry “Koay Teow” noodle that I used to try. The bundle of noodles was nicely simmered with hot water, and then put on top of the mixed soya sauce. It was too salty luckily. Then slices of chicken breast were nicely laid on the bed of the silky noodle, and then drenched with some scallions as well as some garlic oil. The chicken meat was very juicy and tender. With the addition of minced garlic in oil, which is fried till crispy, it had further made the dish more enjoyable. Aroma was also enhanced with the companion of fragrant scallions. With all these simple condiments, the dry koay teow was unarguably, a delectable enjoyment. Therefore, as the adage goes, ‘Never judge a book by its cover’

Wantan noodle seems to be gettable from everywhere here in KL. But it’s the matter of where to find a good one. In this case, I encountered it when going to Imbi for lunch one day after the original plan of going to Time Square got called off. Normally, ‘Char Siew’ would be one of the ‘defaulted’ side dish to be served together with ‘Wan Tan Mee’. However, I prefer to have without it this round. The noodle was springy where each strain was adequately flavoured with the soya sauce and condiments alike. Vegetable was normal as I guess they are just blanched with hot water. As for the ‘wan tan’, they were nicely wrapped within a silky skin, which after cooked in hot soup, they are smooth and delectable to the palate. The soup was clear without any distinctive taste and the filling of the wan tan was nicely marinated. Overall, I think this wan tan noodle was still average.

Sometimes one dish which look very simple, it can contain a very complex taste. Take this chicken noodle as example. It just look simply you put on Koay Teow then shredded chicken then some garlic and sprinkle some spring onion on top. Later pour in some sauce. Voila there comes your chicken noodle. In fact it is not. This dish look very simple yes. But then the noodle is so smooth. Same thing goes to the chicken. Char koay teow is one of the common food you can find it here. I like to eat char koay teow because the taste is so complex. The char koay teow here is sweet because of the soy sauce they put during the frying process. The bean sprout must put it at the end of the process. If you put it too early, the bean sprout will turn out quite soggy. The right timing will make the bean sprout ver crunchy to eat. This whole plate of char koay teow has a lot of cockles. My partner has been raving about this fried nian kao and how he used to buy from the uncle ever since he was young. Apart from nian kao, the uncle also sells fried bananas and sweet potatoes. Everything from cutting to frying is done by the uncle himself and they are usually snapped up quickly by the other patrons. I do not really like the environment here as the ventilation here is nearly non existent and even with fans turned to the max, it felt like being cooked in a hotpot. The lam mee here is quite large portion but the soup lacked the savory factor. There was very little egg in the soup although the broth was thick and gooey. The fu chuk was crispy and I usually dip it in the soup before eating it.

Dessert like this would kill me eventually. Sweet potato on one side, yam on the other side, sweet kaya in the middle, batter-fried all around, and a one-way ticket to fat-man's diseases for me.I would die over and over again for this dessert.Crispy on the outside, starchy on the way to the middle with two different flavours (one side complexly starchy, and the other side smoothly sweet), with a super sweet and aromatic center filling.
