Chee Cheong Fun  Smile Oct 24, 2012

There is really a mountain of hidden yummy food yet to be discovered at Air Itam area. Numerous coffee shops could be seen and it’s up to you which to give it a try firsttongue

For my hearty breakfast, I opt to have some plain but satisfying light meal. Se Chee Cheong Fun be it. The Penang style of this fare is slightly different from the normal one we have in KL. Here, you would have your plain white steamed flour roll covered with prawn paste gravy, instead of the normal sweet sauce you see. For some people, it’s actually quite a put off for its pungent smell, but for me, being the adventurous foodie, am totally fine with itlol The flour roll is silkily smooth indeed and fun was heightened with the addition of crispiness from the fried garlic. You could actually ask for some chilly or belacan to go with it and I heard my dad say, it’s even more much tastier! ^^

It’s been one of the most frequented eatery when Hong Kong cuisine is of concerned. Recently, they have changed their ambassador to Kevin Cheng, and so does their menu uplift design. It has since become more funky and colorful, which I think is much better and I love the new outlook too lol

One of the reasons that keep drawing the crowds back is their diversified menu that able to cater to the various taste buds of the local folks. With its casual dining area, it makes one of the best places to gather and catch up with friends jovially around the table smile

Meal time is here! So I have Rice with Hawaiian Chicken and Salad.

The dish came in a decent portion of fried rice with the chicken meat. The rice was fragrantly fried, each grain was solid but I think it’s a tad too hard, hehe. The coleslaw could be more generous as I prefer more vege in my meallol . Luckily the fried chicken meat which was drenched with creamy sauce, helped to make it up the flaws. The meat was tender but again, the sauce I think was overly done a bit.

Crispy Noodle with Bitter Melon

As for this noodle, the noodles were crisp indeed. It was lightly fried and still possessed the requisite eggy taste. The hot gravy which had topped it off was savoury and not too salty. Even the bitter melon did’t taste bitter at all. There were also some carrots and fillets to help compliment the dish.

Of course, not forgetting their signature Milk Tea. In this case, I prefer to have a warm cup, and it’s big! Their tea was still aromatic and milky as ever. Guess the quality is still well-maintained.

Talking about chicken rice, it’s been circling around my childhood since long long time ago. Thus, that’s one of the reason I sometimes would shun away from this dish whenever there is other options, hehe tongue

Anyway, after some few rounds of suggestion from my dad, finally I gave in to his recommendations. Guess what? After this recent encounter with this menu, I kind of start to give it another try tongue

For your information, this stall has been operating here for quite some time, and it definitely has its own lines of loyal customers. Aside from the amiability of the owners, the food served was pretty good, I would say. And where on earth could you get a plate of decent yummy chicken rice for just RM2!

Since we are coming in a family, so we asked for a mixed plate, ie: Steamed chicken aside and the other would be the roasted palate like Roasted Duck, Pork and Char Siew.

The steamed chicken was tender indeed with its natural sweetness in the meat. Most importantly, it’s adequately cooked as I can’t bear to see if there was any blood stain in sight ~.~ Then, it was layered on generous amount of bean sprouts. The sprouts were very pulpy and crunchy indeed!

As for the roaster plate, the Roasted Pork, or ‘Siew Yuk” was juicy in its three layer meat. Each layer gave you an unique enjoyment by themselves and the skin were crispy too! Not forgetting the roasted duck, which is also succulent where the duck smell was nearly gone unnoticeable. As for the Char Siew, it’s aromatically glazed and grilled to perfection. They taste slightly sweet and delish when paired with the in house chilly sauce.

If you feel dry, you have got the soup to wash it down lol I guess I’d be yearning for more after this tongue

You guys must be wondering upon seeing the review hearder tongue Yea, it’s called ‘Lo Po Peng’ in Cantonese, or literally translated as “Wife biscuits”. Am also not too sure as why this pastry is named after wife, but I just go along with how it’s affectionately called by the folks here in Penang tongue

Aside from the state is famously known for their ‘Tau Sa Pia’, they are also synonym with this biscuit range. With the flat design in beige color, this biscuit is soft to the bite and is also suitable for the consumption of the seniors. Just that moderation is still the best policy as the filling does contain certain level of sugar.

Apart from its flaky exterior, it has a gluey caramel-like filling in between. It’s whitish and seems like maltose material, except it’s not in brown. It’s not too sticky either, but can be tad sweet is taken too much at one go, like 2 pieces? As for me, am satisfied with just one piece at a time smile Lucky thing is the filling isn’t too thick as you can see from here. May be you could give it a try next round when you’re in Penang? ^^

Cheers from a cheerful Penang lass lol

If you’re of the more health conscious folks, you could opt for a lighter meal other than those sinful famously fried stuffs at this island of food haventongue For instance, you may call for this soupy Koew Teow which is the cousin of the drier version in Char Koay Teow, hehe.

The most noticeable difference would the size of the flat noodle. In this variety, you could feel a much smoother texture of the noodle as it is cut into thinner piece. Thus, when eaten with the soup, the texture of the noodle is more silkier and with few slurps, it’s gone into your tummy before you even realized it tongue

This portion served here was decent. Ingredients like minced pork, fish ball, fish cake and meat ball were added to spice up the dish. They were all chewy and tangy since they are freshly prepared. With the sprinkles of scallions, they had further enhanced the aroma of the hearty meal. Pepper that was added to it also helped to increase the level of its enjoyment smile
