I decided to have something flavorful for lunch on that fine Sunday afternoon, so I decided to have the Kimchi pasta alongside with the salmon sashimis.

I love how the kimchi broth is thick and tasty from to the miso paste used. It contains mirin. Mirin is basically a quintessential condiment used in Japanese cuisine. It is a kind of rice wine similar to sake, but with a lower alcohol content and higher sugar content. The ingredients used in this pastas are a mixture of shitake, shimeiji and oyster mushroom, chopped cabbage, sliced carrot and onion. I actually love this as it was flavorful without being too spicy. The broth was too good that I finished it till the last drop and wiped the whole bowl clean.

The salmon sashimi was thickly sliced and fresh. It went well with the soy sauce and wasabi dipping. It was a definitely a delicious meal!

wantan mee fare! OK Mar 20, 2016
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles

Thin strands of egg noodles was springy, no presence of unpleasant alkaline taste in the egg noodles; tossed prettily in soy sauce, dark soy sauce and sesame oil. Totally my type of wanton noodles but this plate of noodles was nothing amazing.

It also comes with a bowl of wantan soup.

The wantans are made off minced pork wrapped in the wantan skins. They were firm and well-seasoned. While, the char siu could do better, in my opinion.

The ratio of meat was more than the fats but the juiciness was not there. I am thinking that it might be the marinade's issue.

Overall, this was very average.

Hakka dinner fare. Smile Mar 20, 2016

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Private Party

Lei Cha (擂茶) or Thunder Tea Rice is a signature Hakka dish which consists of a variety of finely chopped vegetables ranging from leek, long beans, kale, string beans, cabbage, dried radish and aduki beans laid over a bed of rice with a choice of brown or white rice. Usually roasted peanuts will be used as a topping to finish it off.
The soup was fragrant in flavour and aroma as it was boiled using pounded teas, nuts and herbs. This meal was definitely healthy and wholesome.

porkilicious lunch! OK Mar 20, 2016

Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

This makan place was packed to the brim with people during lunch time and curiousity had led me to try it out!

I ordered a bowl of pork noodles without the innards as I don't usually eat them.

That bowl of noodles was nothing amazing and the saving grace to it was the smooth, sikly hor fun. The pork balls were chewy in texture but it was nothing fantastic either.

It was nothing compared to the famous ss15 pork noodles, back in my college days.

Desserts fare OK Mar 20, 2016

A visit to the Ben's Independent Grocer is never complete without my dessert affair at the Ben's Bake Shop.

The bake shop offer a variety of baked goods on display as well as signature plated desserts such as churros, toasts and klonuts.

Upon glancing through the menu and the displayed goods, I made up my mind and decided to have the cheesecake donuts and gula melaka friand.

Friands are basically small french cake, and this one here had an Asian twist to it. The use of gula melaka and coconut in bringing a richer flavor to the friands. It had a nice crisp texture on the exterior while light and fluffy on the inside.

It goes well with a cup of tea, in my opinion.

On the other hand, the cheesecake donut is actually creamy cheese fillings stuffed in plain donuts. It was neither too sweet nor cloying. I felt that it could lend some caramel sauce to complete it.
