The river prawn in bamboo looks interesting and we ordered it. Indeed, the prawns were served in the bamboo shell. Inside the hollowed bamboo shell, the delicious river prawns were getting "drunk" in it, as the soup of the prawn has been added with chinese white wine. The soup is very clear and tasty, the strong flavored soup and the prawns were very nice. The prawns were juicy and succulent.

The lady boss of the restaurant is original Taiwanese and has been operating this restaurant for many years. Their food is nice and lots of variety. The ma po tau fu was one of the dishes we ordered that day. The ma po tau fu is white bean curd cooked in spicy sauce. The sauce is not that spicy after all. The white bean curd is cut into small cubes and they were very smooth.

Oh Nee is a sweet dessert made from yam paste. This is a traditional teow chew dessert and as far as i know, the preparation work for this dessert is tedious. However, the sweet dessert is absolutely delicious and addictive. You also need to order the Oh Nee in advance, sometimes the dessert will sold out very quickly. The purple color yam paste is steamed with some ginko. The yam paste is sweet, smooth and very refined. Love it so much

The highlight of Formosa Combination was the butter eel, a savoury, slippery temptation that had me licking my lips. Cholesterol non-watchers will revel in the deep-fried pig intestines with sesame seeds _ addictively crunchy and odour-free. Less sinful but equally scrumptious were the three-cup top shell and stuffed lotus roots.

I had two helpings of the simmered winter melon with diced chicken, pork, mushrooms, gingko nuts, wolfberry, red dates, lotus seeds & lily buds. This warmed my stomach and soul, reminding me of the robust, nourishing soups that were my grandmother's speciality.

The Taiwanese-HK-style crispy roasted suckling pig shattered whatever illusions we still had of a healthy meal. Meaty and fatty but not oily, this should satisfy most carnivores.

Stir-fried shelled prawns with deep fried kailan, yam paste and sweet potato dressing. Divinely dip-worthy, this is one of New Formosa's more recent additions to its menu. Dubbed a "President Ma Banquet Dish" and presented in colours like orange, white and green that are meant to represent healthy food.

Taiwanese Sichuan Crispy Duck and Herb-marinated Longan Pipa Duck. Best eaten with one's bare hands and wrapped in lettuce. This kinda dried out after we left it on the table for too long. Even while piping-hot, it fell short of succulence but was still satisfactory.

The stomach-buster proved to be the steamed crabs on top of unpolished rice, onion, scallions, shallots, mushrooms, dried shrimp, minced meat and Chinese sausage. Comfort food for carb lovers, the rice was the best kind of mushiness.

Am not a desserts fan, but the steamed yam paste with mashed pumpkin and gingko nuts was irresistible. A soft, not-too-sweet but not-too-bland blend.

On the other end of the textural spectrum was the hot yam coated in crunchy caramel honey sauce. A must-order if you're here with children.

The perfect finish to a near-perfect feast. A quartet of puddings _ mango, green tea aloe vera, custard caramel and honey herbal. Puddings can't get any more pleasurable.

Salmon yee sang. Not the best ever, but OK for the occasion. Taiwanese crunchy popped rice with seafood. Best eaten while piping-hot. The crisp rice offered a nice textural contrast to the chewy squid and soft fish maw. Steamed herbal tiger prawns in bamboo. Tasted comfortingly nutritious. Roasted chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, chestnuts and other goodies. A fun platter to dig through; we savoured every bit of the tender, flavourful meat. Fresh mixed veggies, with hearty portions of slice

Hunan ham in honey sauce, served with "silver thread bread." A sweet, sinful treat, though it was messy to eat the ham with the bread as a sandwich.

Bamboo Rice. Salty but addictive, with lotsa melt-in-the-mouth yam & dried shrimp.

If you do not prefer yam for dessert, you could also choose to have the Assorted Pudding with Green Tea, Aloe Vera, Honey Herbal, Custard Caramel and Mango Pudding. I personally liked the Custard Caramel as it wasn't too sweet to begin with and the caramel is fragrant. The pudding's texture is at the right consistency. These delightful puddings add freshness to the scrumptious meal with its various flavours and colours.

While you're here at New Formosa Restaurant, you could never go wrong ordering the Sweet Yam in Honey Sauce Taiwanese Style. Preparation for this special dessert has to be done quickly where the warm yam covered with honey sauce and sesame is swiftly placed in icy cold water for the honey sauce to harden. The results are crunchy sweet outer layer and soft warm yam inside.
