Pastel Café OK Jun 15, 2014

Pastel, a little cafe in a Setiawangsa shop-house.

Tacos are also a speciality at Pastel, filled with lamb or beef for RM18 per plate of two.

'Texas Burger' with hand-pressed beef patty (RM16); the tacos & burgers come with fries. Perhaps not memorable enough to specifically travel to Setiawangsa for, but probably worthwhile for folks who live or work here.

B.A.D Cafe Smile Jun 15, 2014

The folks behind Kota Damansara's Wood & Steel have helped to create a new cafe in Desa Sri Hartamas with a name that's determined to raise eyebrows.

BAD barista-owners Ji & Hafiz (we've probably spelled their names wrong) explain it this way: "We're nice people but we're a badass cafe." This two-storey space is only scheduled to officially open next week, since it's facing a staff shortage, but here's a sneak peek into one of 2014's most memorably constructed cafes.

Hot meals should be available within weeks too; expect Eggs Benedict & their ilk.

Well-prepared baked treats should satisfy the sweet tooth at BAD, located on the street level of Hartamas' Glomac Galleria.

The coffee? If you like what Wood & Steel serves, you'll likely enjoy BAD's beverages as well.

Epique Coffee Company at Damansara Perdana's Empire Damansara, is here to please.

Epique serves not only regular ol' lattes but also Milo & Horlicks lattes (RM7 each) for our inner child (plus a Milo affogato too).

Mini salted cheesecakes (RM2) & Hokkaido chiffon cupcakes (RM8), Epique's got 'em.

Kalamazoo Cafe OK Jun 13, 2014

Kalamazoo, a Petaling Jaya diner that reputedly pays fond tribute to its owners' time at Western Michigan University.

Burgers occupy a place of pride here: We opted to share the tempting-sounding KZoo Ultimatum, a physically towering creation with a pork patty, chicken patty, beef patty, plus a mixed lamb-&-beef patty.

Unfortunately, too much of this went unfinished. The patties proved disheartening _ overly processed in texture & poorly balanced in flavour. On the bright side, Kalamazoo is a pet-friendly cafe, so visitors might meet some cute puppies here.

Kitakami Bistro OK Jun 13, 2014

The closest thing right now to a contemporary-minded cafe in Sri Petaling, right down to its everything-old-is-cool-again embrace of vintage artefacts like a used sewing machine & transistor radio

Oven-baked pork bolognese spaghetti with cheese & sausages. Decent for a dish that's mainly built with processed food.

Blueberry & Oreo cheesecakes in the chiller, but maybe not this time.

Caffe Musetti Grand Cru Blend, 100 percent Arabica beans. RM8 for a latte.
