Over at Formosa Restaurant, you get to savour authentic Taiwanese cuisine. The taste may be similar to our local Chinese palate but in terms of dishes types, it's quite different. Try the Stuffed Bean Curd Skin with Special Fish Paste. The stuffed bean curd is wonderfully prepared where the exterior is crispy while the interior of fish paste is soft and flavourful, with a hint of fish sweetness and saltiness. It also comes with some stir-fried greens.

You should try the Winter Melon Soup. This nutritious cooling soup is boiled for at least four hours with barley, peanuts, black beans and ginkgo with spare ribs. It is boiled using the winter melon as the base for better nutrition and flavour. The soup is enriched with all the ingredients’ goodness where it unveils the ingredients’ sweetness with each spoonful. The pork ribs are flavourful and tender too.

With all those ingredients, it gives a fusion of flavours and tastes as well as fragrances from the dried shrimps, mushrooms and of course, Chinese sausages. It's a good blend of texture and saltiness and sweetness all in one. Besides that, the meat is also infused with the mixture goodness making it a flavourful dish.

I loved mee suah. I like the slightly saltiness in it that makes the noodle an exciting treat. At New Formosa Restaurant, the Braised Vermicelli in Taiwanese Style has just that, plus a lot more! The vermicelli emits a strong fragrance of flour and it blended extremely well with the thick spicy and sweet gravy that includes meat, mushroom, cabbage and shrimps. The soft vermicelli slides down the throat easily and leaves a thin black vinegar aftertaste. A bowl of this is definitely not enough to satisfy the big eater!

During any dinner, my family would love to order the fish instead of any other meat. While you're here at New Formosa Restaurant, you could try out its Fried Local Siakap in Taiwanese Home Style Sauce. It may look normal like any fish in soy sauce but beware as it is quite spicy! However, the spiciness doesn’t steal away the fish’s freshness. I also liked its slightly crispy exterior. I had the Taiwanese Fried Sesame Chicken and Jiang Nan Duck during one of the CNY dinners. The dish that shines through is its Jiang Nan Duck. It is something to look forward to as the duck is deboned and stuffed with special fish paste. The fish paste blended well with the duck and gives out a different kind of texture and flavours where it combines the springy fish paste and meaty duck together as an item. A dinner banquet wouldn’t be complete without a fish dish. New Formosa Restaurant offers Steamed Sea Grouper in Hong Kong Teochew Style. The fish sits in a sourish yet appetizing broth among Chinese mushrooms, tomatoes and salted cabbage. Its firm meat gives a chewy sensation and emits its natural sweetness and freshness with every bite, making it a delightful dish.

New on the menu at New Formosa Restaurant is Deep Fried Diced Chicken Sprinkled with Almond Flakes and Dipped in Special Mulberry Sauce Formosan Style. That is quite a mouthful to say! Sweet and tangy, this creative dish uses whole mulberries, almond flakes and sunflower seeds making it a healthier choice among the rest. Combined with chicken cubes dipped in a thin layer of sesame batter before being deep fried, it’s a fine marriage between savoury and sweetness! The chicken cubes did not overpower the sauce even though it's deep fried but blended well together with the sauce.

It is roasted at twice the amount of time needed to achieve the crispy skin texture. Proportioned just right with fat and tender meat, it is really an enticing dish with the flavours infused into the pork meat. To offset the greasiness of the skin, you can dip them into the traditional sweet bean paste sauce or sourish vinegar served.

I personally loved the Sesame Chicken and Butter Eel at New Formosa Restaurant. The Sesame Chicken is very crispy as a light batter is used. Additionally, it has loads of sesame seeds hence it gives out a very fragrant aroma. Meanwhile, the Butter Eel is strong in aroma and taste from the butter and curry leaves used. Crispy from the outside and juicy from the inside, this dish is simply irresistible.
