one of those few places that i would recommend on trying out modern fusion food here. They make really awesome homemade lemongrass pandan tea in a pot! Not too spicy with ginger and not too sweet at all. Perfect for an after meal drink. For the mains, i had the moo moo rice bowl which was a hearty bowl of basil beef tenderloin served over rice topped with fried egg and served with ABC soup.  seriously comforting home food.

Also, their interior and decorations are really rustic. Sitting inside made me feel like I was brought back in time where my grandparents' lives would be like. It feels very homely and warm - however be warned that there is only a selected number of seats so during rush hours might be a slightly troublesome to get a table.

We ordered their deep fried sweet potato fries and these were super good. The sweet potatoes were sliced super thinly, smaller than the regular french fries then battered together before being plunge into super hot oil. As a result it is almost like hashbrowns but using sweet potato instead. These were super addictive and not very oily which was a major plus.

Then for my friend, she ordered their ulam fried rice which has been raved about by a number of people. After trying it I understood why because the rice was just so fragrant and super delicious when it is served to the table hot out of the wok. It also came with small portions of belacan kangkung and long beans, plus a pappadam. SO SO SO good.

As for me, I ordered the special set meal for the day. I got the Basil Beef Rice which comes with a bowl of ABC soup as a side. The moment I saw that it came with a soup, I just couldn't not order it because it is two of my favourite things combined.

The basil beef was so so so fragrant and topped over steaming hot rice was just isntant comfort food. All you had to do was break the yolk of the fried egg and eat it all together, bringing you to heaven. Plus at the end when you finished most of the egg & meat, pour in the ABC soup and indulge.

Would definitely be back for more! <3

Suddenly, I spotted this cafe during the rain while searching for a hair saloon. So I decided I would like to have dinner somewhere here. I ended up eating at the Japanese restaurant next door but I had a coffee here as I was very sleepy.

The decor and ambience is amazing. The door, for one, is very unique. The handle was made from wooden ladle. And the old door gave an old charm to the cafe.

As one enters the cafe, one is greeted by an old chest with a steel tiffin-carrier and some books, even an Enid Blyton book!

On the ceiling, hung knick-knacks like pots and pans, ladles and even an old-fashioned red flask, that we used to have, when we were young.

Initially I wanted to order cappuccino, my favourite coffee but then thought that since I was going to takeaway, and would not be able to see the flowery design on the surface of the coffee, I decided to get a latte instead. It seems that the barista was so kind to make a leaf design specially for my latte inside the paper cup too! Yeah!

The latte was not bad. Not too much milk and the milk was not too milky and did not have the normal milk taste. The most amazing thing is that the latte/cappuccino costs only RM 8, much cheaper than the international franchise coffee which do not have the design on the surface.

I noticed they also serve set lunch on weekdays at about RM 12-15, at 11.30 am -2pm for unique food like Ulam Spaghetti which have Malay culture in it. I am definitely coming back to try this item.

Firstly the interior of the area was really cozy with dimmed lights and they really make use of utensils from the past to bring us down memory lane. The dining utensils holder was really cute with strips of comic for patrons to read while waiting for their meal.

Look at this unique tiffin carrier which has motives on the exterior and also the books that they placed at the counter once you enter the premise.

Moving on to the food! Mum read in the AEON magazine that it is a must to try their spicy soup beef macaroni and their passionfruit crepe. So what else! Of course we tried it! We also tried their mini hot chocolate which is actually kid sized but full of omph!

Firstly the spicy soup beef macaroni! It looks like a small bowl but trust me it took me and my mum to finish this bowl of spicy goodness! It is not overally spicy but just nice! If you find it not spicy enough you can add the additional paprika that they serve together with the macaroni to give it more kick!

Next our hot chocolate! When it came both of us laughed at the size of it! It was super duper mini and cute! But don't look down at this hot chocolate! Priced at roughly RM 4 it was so chocolatety and delicious! Even my mum who is not a fan of ordering drinks said it was tasty!

Lastly our dessert of the day! Yummy passionfruit with vanilla ice-cream on a bed of crispy crepes! It is additive and the sourness of the passionfruit really blends well with the sweetness of the ice-cream *thumbs up*

Overall it was a great experience at Fat Spoon athough the prices may be a bit high but it is normal for the area around Uptown Damansara since the rent is super high

i am kind of a sucker for vintage inclined decor in a modern setting, which was its main theme. it's interesting how fat spoon is able to make disjointed pieces of decor work tastefully together, which i loved. almost eccentric but artsy.
to give it a cozy ambiance, the presence instax of happy moments, the rustic feel of the furniture pieces with the backdrop of walls of exposed clay bricks completes the whole stage.

i was expecting the story book menu so i wasn't taken aback when i was handed peter and jane books. the menu was an interpretation of malaysian homemade classics with a fusion of different cultures, which i have yet to decide whether it was good or bad.

a favorite at fat spoon, i usually try to not take huge chances with food choices when it comes to my first time at restaurants. i was expecting a plate of spicy fried rice but instead was surprised by the sambal belacan served separately in a little dish. well, i suppose you could decide the level of spiciness you'd like that day. the fried chicken with a lovely seasoning of salt, pepper and tumeric was fried to perfection resulted to crispy skin and moist inside. i wish the piece was a tad bigger. the fried rice had the pleasant surprise of the chopped up dried shrimps in it, lending an occasional seafood-y burst of saltiness but in general could have used a bit more seasoning.. the undercooked long beans could have definitely used some more time in the pan. the main star of the dish - the sambal was a spicy yet delicious accompaniment that worked so well with the rest of the ingredients.

grandma's recipe:: spicy beef macaroni soup | a comforting bowl of spicy beef broth over served over macaroni (rm 11.90)

{wy} was in the mood for something soup-y and i was more than happy to give it a taste when she offered. the one sip, i thought the taste was lackluster and lack the seasoning. it was missing the robust flavor that i was searching for when it was neither here nor there with the spiciness but it did offer some comforting warmth. {wy} requested for a couple more of lime halves to try to spruce up the flavor profile which helped give it a tart note to the monotonous broth.

grandma's recipe:: dry spicy beef macaroni | dry version of our signature spicy beef macaroni garnished with coriander & topped with medium boiled egg (rm 11.90)

this was probably my least favorite of the bunch. the under seasoned noodles was topped with equally under seasoned beef which rendered the dish bland. so much so that the coriander was a pleasant addition although i am not a huge fan of the herb.

spicy - ever so slightly. dry - yup, perhaps too dry that i had to shower the noodles with the side bowl of soup (which was also a move to add flavor). i even had to ask a couple more lime halves to salvage the meal but even after the addition, i just couldn't finish it. the medium boiled egg was cooked very well though but not enough to make up for the rest of the meal.

desserts :: red velvet cake (rm 9.90)

one of my favorite cakes, i'm always searching for one that blows me away. the classic pairing of cocoa infused cake with cream cheese frosting, this one did not have the right proportions of sweetness (it was too sweet) and the tartness of the cream cheese to counterbalance. the other flavors were so pronounced that it took the cocoa flavor out of the equation. and what surprised me even more was when they served the cake warm - it was probably heated the microwave for a few seconds. i chuckled at the first warm bite...never have i had red velvet cake warm especially with cream cheese frosting and it threw me of in a not so good way.

where the food is they serve is a reflection of its decor, fat spoon serves malaysian classics which we have grew up eating in our homes but with minor updates with the chef's personal twists. unfortunately, i think i am more besotted by its decor more than its food. if you're interested in trying, i'd say keep to the classic favorites.

We ordered the Horlicks ice cream. It was quite malty in its taste due to the nature of Horlicks. It also has a nice smooth creamy taste to it, which makes the ice cream such a delight. It is not too sweet, which is a good thing for those weight watchers and health conscious people out there. For RM7.20+, it is reasonably priced.

The lou shu fun was quite delicious, although slightly overcooked. It was a little too soft for my liking. The gravy was delicious, and eaten with the minced meat it was a good combination. The strange thing about this dish was that the thick gravy was so much, it was almost like a broth instead. The egg was initially raw, but after mixing it into the dish it was cooked and its egginess suited the dish well.

This claypot lou shu fun costs RM9.90+.

I ordered the Moo Moo Rice Bowl, which from the name itself one could guess its beef served with rice. It arrived just in time for me to finish the trivia book cum menu. The beef was very delicious! It was tender and well marinated with a nice flavour to it. It has a strong beefy taste which I love it so much. The fried egg was also well made as it was not too oily. This dish comes with soup, which is also quite delicious, although I could taste some MSG to it. This dish costs RM15.90+, which is good value for money given how delicious this dish is. I would definitely come back to eat this dish again!

Really liked the simple presentation. All the elements on the plate were pretty well cooked and flavoured. The curry was rich, it wasn't overly powered with spiciness nor milkiness. The stir-fried long beans were very flavourful. Love the saltiness and a hinge of spiciness there as well. The rice was warm and fluffy. With that price, totally worth it. Awesome!

Another Red Velvet Cake in another restaurant. The cake was really soft, I really liked the texture of it. Its like chewing on a marshmallow. The cake was also pretty dense and moist, which isn't a bad thing. However, I personally do not favor the cream cheese. It was very different from the usual Red Velvet cake frosting. It tasted extremely weirdly yogurty. I don't actually hate it, but just felt a bit weird.
