Flattened Chicken with awesome chili

It has been awhile since I had Indonesian food, and honestly speaking, I haven’t had rice in a long time. So I went ahead with this delectable chicken meal. With what’s called the “penyet”, meaning flattened is the concept of this authentic Indonesian cuisine. If you look at the menu, it’s everything, followed by ‘penyet’. So ayam penyet literary means smashed chicken. So what they do is, they kind of hammer and lightly smashed the chicken a little bit so the meat is very loose when you tear it.

So ayam penyet literary means smashed chicken. So what they do is, they kind of hammer and lightly smashed the chicken a little bit so the meat is very loose when you tear it. It is fried in a way where there is lots of crunchy deep fried flour, one that tastes rather similar like the Japanese tempura flour.
The complete combo penyet set meal comes with white rice, soup, penyet meet balls, penyet egg, penyet tofu, tempeh, penyet chicken and penyet beef. Served with raw cabbage, cucumber and Indonesian chili paste, the penyet sambal.

 If you only want the chicken without the rice, then the famous ala carte ayam penyet is what you should order.

 I was told that the proper way Indonesians eat this is with some dark soy sauce. I thought it added some sweetness to the dish.

 Not to mention how I adore the sambal which went so well with my favourite tempeh and the raw cabbage. With the Korean and Peranakan tongue that I have, the sambal really impresses me with the fiery hot and piquant sensation.

 Next I add on the terong penyet, ie fried brinjal, which serves with penyet tofu, tempeh, as well as the raw cabbage, cucumber and the penyet sambal.

 And I must point out how much I love the tempeh. It was so fine and soft in texture, with a sapid fragrant form the smooth fermented beans.

 Also try the Sup Sayur Asam , supposedly sour but I thought it was rather sweet. A bit dulcified, with slight sour-ish spicy. Lots of vegetable, corn and potato.

 Here they even have authentic Indonesian beverages. We had Ice syrup Bandung and the botol sosro, which somewhat taste like English tea, with slight sugar. As for the Ice syrup Bandung, it was really weird. I took a sip and I couldn’t proceed with another. I’m not sure if that’s how its supposed to taste like, or did something went wrong that day. I have had syrupBandung from local mamak stalls and any mamak stall can beat this flat.

Delicious Smashed Chicken! :D

I love Ayam Penyet. One of my favorite chain Ayam Penyet restaurants is Wang Solo (one of the most authentic around!).. and the other is Ayam Penyet Express.. It's located along the Marrakesh Walk at Lower Ground Sunway Pyramid (where most of the eateries are at). It's slightly expensive compared to Wang Solo but I'm happy to report that it tastes just as good The Ayam Penyet is done just right, with well-marinated chicken spiced and 'smashed' to perfection! The Ayam Penyet is done just right, with well-marinated chicken spiced and 'smashed' to perfection! The skin's really crispy and flavorful. Do also try out the Lele Penyet (fish version). Tasted just as good!

Ayam Penyet always never fails to pull my attention. I always like to eat ayam penyet because of the sambal chili. The sambal is taste very spicy and then it really enhance all your taste buds at the same time. The smashed chicken is so tender and soft. I like their crispy chicken skin. Then then soup is to reduce the spiciness of your tongue when you feel too spicy. I like their spiciness stay in my tongue.

I always succumbed to eating ayam penyet whenever I spotted an Ayam Penyet place. Which is why I always end up at Ayam Penyet only when I’m at Sunway Pyramid. Need to try more new place! The price of the food here is ridiculously pricey when compared with eating in Indonesia. RM16.50 for a combo that has no soup and but a drink, 3 bakso and one egg!  Price aside, the food is really yummy! The ayam penyet is delicious eaten with the crispy bits called bumbu. The fried bakso tasted artificial least I can’t figure out the meat used to make it. The gado gado is like the poor’s satay, satay gravy with just vegetables and heaps of keropok. Pipe in tons of the kicap manis (sweet thick soy sauce) provided on everthing and feast! Watch out for the fiery sambal though.

 The refillable ice lime juice is very nice, I’ve never tasted lime juice like that before. It’s tangy and does not taste like our normal limau ais. Normally I will order Soda Gembira, which is iced syrup with condensed milk and soft drink (7UP or Sprite, I’m not sure). It’s interesting that you are only required to pay after eating. MSG level is low.
