More ramen Smile Nov 18, 2015

After spending eight days in Sydney eating western food, my stomach was dying for some really good ramen. So when I touched down in KL the first place that I wanted to go for lunch was Ippudo for some nice warm broth plus good textured noodles.

Since the lunch set was still available and happened to have my favourite sides, I ordered that while mom had a starter to herself because she was full already.

I'm not really sure what this is because my brain could only think about ramen at the time. But it's some sort of spring roll with ebikko and some special sauce. Although I am not too sure what it was exactly but I do know that it was a really nice bite cause the vegetables were crisp & fresh.

As always I would get the salad with sesame dressing that comes with the lunch set. It's as good as it usually is only sometimes the dressing is a little scarce. But easily overlooked since I was mainly just looking forward to my bowl of ramen.

Then my bowl of Karakka-Men with Cha Siew was brought to my table, that was when I was sent to seventh heaven. The smell of the pork bone broth was so delicious and mixed with the spicy miso paste plus spring onions, it was just enough to make my mouth water. The soup never fails to amaze me as the flavours are just so strong but yet makes you want more and more.

The noodles always has a nice bite to it, especially since I asked for it to be a 'hard' texture. So by the time it's been soaked in the broth then it'll be nicely textured cause I am not a fan of overcooked and soft noodles.

Although most people have told me that Ippudo is overrated, it still remains my personal favourite place to go to for some good ramen. Plus with the option of a set lunch, it is more afforable now.

Porky OK Nov 18, 2015

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles

There had been a new restaurant that was on a to-be-tried list. So when we got the chance, mom brought myself and a few friends there to try something that sounded quite interesting especially to a carnivore like myself.

Apparently the specialty at Champ's Kitchen is pork product, namely their braised pork belly. At least I think it was the belly because the meat was tender and had nice layers of fat.

Anyway, we ordered other things from the menu too like their tofu. I am not sure what this is supposed to be because I wasn't paying attention when it was ordered but it does remind me a ltitle of mapo tofu. Except it has salted fish. Though it was also slightly more on the sweet side and also somewhat more watery than I would have preferred.

Since it's a favourite of mom's to order, we also got some Chicken and... Although it wasn't bad, it was not the best either as we already have tried better ones elsewhere. Plus I am not really a big fan of chicken anyways so I was not exactly into this dish.

Then comes the main star of the entire meal which was the braised pork knuckle with chinese wine and also some eggs as a side. Everyone at the table loved this because the meat was very tender and almost melted in your mouth instantly when you take a bite. I particularly liked the egg because it's absorbed the flavour of the sauce without being so overcooked that it is hard.

However the entire meal, I was only about fifty percent pleased with it. Based on personal preference I would most definitely not pick this place as a first choice to have a meal at. But everyone else that ate really liked it so do give Champ's kitchen a try especially if you enjoy braised pork meats.

Top-Notch Thai Dining  Smile Nov 17, 2015

Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Seafood | Fine Dining

Being a lover of thai food, I usually roll my eyes when people suggest a 'fine-dining' thai restaurant because the food they serve is usually only mediocre. But with a really steep price. So when mom suggested dining at Busaba which is quite an 'atas' restaurant I was already preparing myself for the meal to be sub-par at best.

For appetisers we ordered a plate of Meng Kam. I honestly do not know what is in the red and dark sauce but I do know that it is absolutely amazing, especially eaten with the condiments which have already been wrapped up nicely in the leaves for you. There's a little bit of kick in there with the chillies but mellowed out beautifully by the slightly sweet sauce.

The portion is quite generous as a starter especially for three people. So I commend Busaba for their beautifully presented and absolutely delicious tasting Meng Kam.

According to my mom, they have the best Mango Salad which was a must order. However when it arrived at our table I was quite shocked to see that it came with a prawn and lots of fried bits plus nuts on top of the shredded mango.

She was right, this was so so so soooo good that we ordered a second plate as if it were our main dish. The nuts and fried bits gave such a good crunch to the juicy but sour mangoes. Just the thought of it is enough to make me salivate.

We also had an order of the Seafood Otak-Otak. Now this is actually a very simple food and could easily be gotten at pasar malam for like maybe Rm1 a piece so I was shocked to find out that mom had ordered it.

Though I was once again proven wrong because it wasn't the measly fish cake size otak we usually get in the street. The flavours of it was just so good that I coudln't help but eat another piece and just went 'mmmm' the entire time I was chewing it.

Safe to say that Busaba proved me wrong about how fine dining thai food is over-rated. I would most definitely be back to try the rest of the menu without going too crazy with their starters first.

Hong Kong Lunch OK Nov 17, 2015
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Noodles

I have probably said this before several times but I will say it again - I really really love Hong Kong food. Whether it is authentic or not is subjective however it doesn't make me like the food any less.

Kim Gary's has been a family favourite, especially the one in Sungai Wang plaza since we shop there almost every week at one point. Our go-to place for brunch or lunch will always be Kim Gary's because they offer many different kinds of set lunch that comes with a soup and drink which is super affordable. However I haven't been there in a while and when I got the chance, it was my number one suggestion.

A must order whenever I am at Kim Gary's is their shredded pork with mushroom rice, topped with a nicely fried egg. I remember several years ago this dish was super fragrant and the sauce that it comes with was really nice, plus there used to be a nicely generous serving of pork.

However things seems to no longer be the same now as it was only mediocre at best and the egg was overly cooked which means no nicely runny yolk to coat the hot rice. Safe to say I was quite disappointed with my used to be favourite dish.

My aunt decided to order the teriyaki chicken rice, it also coems with a fried egg and some beans. Although this flavour has never been a favourite of mine, I certainly feel like it tasted better than my dish. However the chicken portion was a little small though enough for my aunt who has a smaller appetite than most people.

At least her egg was nicely runny.

The best dish that day was the Noodles with Herbal Chicken soup that my mother ordered. This was really good because the soup was really well flavoured plus there were quite a lot of chicken bits. Plus I think I really enjoyed the nissin noodles because it was our regular packaged ramen noodle which I often times eat a lot of despite it being quite unhealthy.

After this experience, I probably feel a little disappointed with Kim Gary's standards as it feels as if it had dropped slightly. However I do have hopes that other branches would be bette and other dishes would taste better than my usual.

MORE THAI Smile Nov 17, 2015
Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Seafood

After getting done with some grocery shopping at my favourite supermarket, I was in the mood for some good thai food. Usually I'd eat at Zanmai but oddly enough I was not feeling the craving for japanese and instead went for something with a little more spice.

So once we paid for our things, momma and I went up to Bangkok House for some good ol' thai food. I haven't eaten there before but she has several times and told me that it was pretty good. Since we were already there I thought why not just give it a try.

As always, I ordered a green curry chicken and found this quite satisfying. Not many places do this bowl of goodness justice but the one at Bangkok house was pretty good. It was perfectly creamy and spicy, making me go back for more just for the sauce. However it was a little bit scarce on chicken meat although that was partly the main part of the dish.

For an added side, I also ordered their Stir-fried kangkung with belacan. This was pretty good but nothing too much to shout about as I found it to be similar to any other kangkung you can get at other thai establishments.

The service was pretty good that night as there were not too many patrons dining. However there are times were it was a little bit difficult to catch the server's attention as they lurked around a certain area that kept my table out of view.

Other than that, I think it's a good place to have some thai food. Especially when you are already at One Mont Kiara.
