2016-06-03
Ipoh, Tuck Kee Restaurant, Octopus
Been visiting the same old Bean Sprout Chicken restaurant, Yong Tau Fu stall or Smooth Tofu-fa stall? It’s time to give the rest of the existed restaurants a try too! With so many good delicious food available here, Ipoh is indeed a foodie’s must visit state! Let’s begin our journey with recommendations from Best Restaurant to Eat to explore on good food today! (The restaurants are listed in no particular order. Some of the establishments below are not halal)

1. Kedai Kopi Sun Yuan Foong

Sun Yuan Foong Restaurant, Poached Egg toast, Yong Tau Fu, Chee Cheong Fun, White Coffee, Ipoh
For Breakfast - we went to Kedai Kopi Sun Yuan Foong which is located in Ipoh Old Town - this is a very popular breakfast place in Ipoh and where the famed White Coffee is from. We tried their toast bread with poached egg and white coffee. The bread is buttered up before toasting it and it is good! Furthermore, there is a Chee Cheong Fun stall and Yong Tau Fu too! The fried Yong Tau Foo was very smooth! The fish pastes were chewy and have the bouncy texture. Do try the other stuffed items like the Ladies Finger and Brinjal.

2. Kedai Makanan Nam Heong

Nam Heong Restaurant, White Coffee,Char Kuey Teow, Ipoh
Moving forward to Nam Heong in Ipoh Town, we ordered their Fried Kuey Teow. The noodle was fried to the right ‘Wok Hei’. This is really good although serving is quite small, thus we had to order another plate to satisfy our cravings!

3. Nasi Ganja @ Kedai Kopi Yong Suan

Nasi Ganja, Nasi Kandar, kedai Kopi Yong Suan, Ipoh
For lunch, we tried the famous ‘Nasi Ganja’ in Kedai Kopi Yong Suan. Upon arriving slightly after 12.00pm, this coffee shop in Ipoh Town was already having a long queue. When it was our turn, we ordered rice with fried chicken and it will be best eaten with the curry gravy. Then, we ordered add on of Mutton curry. The meat was chewy and not so gamey, taste wise it was not bad although it lacks the fragrant spice aroma and taste which I love. We wanted to order the Squid, but it was finish by then.

4. Restaurant Lucky Ipoh

Restaurant Lucky Ipoh, Fish Meat Noodle, Fish Paste Noodle, Hand made fish ball, Ipoh
Further down the road, we were recommended to try this fish meat noodle out. Located inside Lucky Ipoh restaurant, what was good is the Fish Meat Noodles! The noodles are made from fish paste and then cooked in Fish Fillet, Prawns or Crabs. We tried 2 dishes which were the Fish meat noodles with Garoupa fillet slice (RM50.00). It is cooked using a clear broth and the flesh of the fish fillet was firm and cooked to the right texture. Next, we had the steam Yue Mai (RM13.00), from what we understand this is the Wolf-Herring fish which gives a firm and bouncy texture. Since it is steam, you can really enjoy the natural taste of the fish paste used to make this fish ball.

5. Kedai Makan Tuck Kee

Restaurant Tuck Kee, Blached Octopus, Chicken Feet, Wak Tan Hor, Ipoh
Through some recommendation, we tried out Tuck Kee Restaurant located at No 61, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Ipoh Town. Tuck Kee is famous for its fried noodles especially the ‘River Moon’ Flat Noodle. This dish is similar to the ‘Wak Tan Hor’ but it is different in taste and it is the signature here. The second dish was the ‘Moon Flat Noodle’; this fared much better as the raw eggs when mixed with the hot noodles, gives it a silky finishing to the noodles! What stand out in Tuck Kee for us are the side dishes that they had, the first is the Chicken Feet and Poached Octopus in soya sauce. This dish is excellent as the springy octopus was very fresh. We had to order another one as it was really very tasty! Finally is the ‘Taugeh’ - bean sprout, which in Ipoh is one of the must have dishes. Fat in size, it is crunchy when you eat it.
