To the udon fans out there, this is the place for you to hunt for, if you are yearning for some real good and original taste Japanese udon, all the way under the belt of Chef Yukihiro Arakawa. Currently, this Chief Cook is managing a humble outlet at Uptwon Damansara, that goes by the name of Arata, decked out in its own unique simplicity yet comfy atmosphere.
It too adopt the open-kitchen concept, where you get to see the busy chefs at work, behind the scene, oh….also behind the boldly orangey cloth banned which is bearing its proud name, Arata, in kanji, of course
The word actually signifies 'Fresh' or 'New', which is then reflected in its agreeably wide choices of authentically dished up menu. No wonder the restaurant design is kept to the minimalistic concept, so to reflect the true feel of Japanese restaurant environment.
Its udon is homemade and then freshly cut to serve the discerning gourmands. Here at Arata, they vow to serve the best and the freshest cut of Udon.

Karaage Kake Udon
A bowl of freshly made udon served in a hot broth, accompanied by some minced ginger and some thinly chopped green onions, alongside crispily fried chicken karaage on top of a gentle bed of lettuce.

Meat Sauce Udon
Love the soup as it comes with generous helpings of my favourite kelps. The soup too is decently sapid, not so thick in miso taste (as I prefer my soup not to be too salty or thick in body) and I feel that it is the same stock base use in hot udon earlier. The stock is really saporous, and amazes you with its distinct, pleasant umami flavor.

An ideal sides to any Japanese meal, silky smooth Chawanmushi with scallop, flavoured by premium grade Konbu As plain as it might seem on the surface, but deep down in the custard shall you reveal the treasure
The scallops and surimi have actually enhanced the velvet steamed egg awesomely with irresistible oceanic sweetness. Yum yum!

I would definitely be back for their udon soon. Trust me, they do serve one of the best originally made udon in town. Head over here one day to try it out yourself (=

Mentaiko cod roe udon (RM16), savory & slurp-worthy. Could Arata be the Klang Valley's best udon restaurant? Potentially.

It took some time for our orders to be served but for a good bowl of udon, I don't mind. The soup was clear and the ingredients were fresh and nicely presented. My mouth started to drool at the sight of my bowl of udon goodness. One thing I love about Japanese food is their Ajitama tamago (flavored egg) because they could always make it hard on the outside and soft in the inside, making the yolk soft but not too watery. The vege was fresh and the color was nice. The seaweed was massive and adds more flavoring into the soup. The pork slices were not too fatty, just the way I liked it. For pork lovers, you'll love this because of the porky smell.

The highlight would be the noodle and the broth because this is one of the better udon I have tasted in Malaysia. The broth is clear so that it brings out the taste of the udon. The udon was chewy and eggy, texture was good, not very soft nor hard. And don't underestimate the portion. It could look little but because it's thick, it can be pretty filling.

I manage to finish the broth as well because it was savoury and went well with the udon. One of the best in the area. Do give it a try!

I was most intrigued from the menu when I saw they were serving ice cream in frozen strawberry. I have never tried those before, hence wifey and I decided to order some. One was definitely not enough, and we found ourselves wanting more, so we ordered another one. It was gone in a jiffy!

The kitchen of Arata is an open concept one, hence we can see how the chef work to prepare our udon. The pork rice bowl reminds me of the dish served in Yoshinoya, but was way better. There were pieces after pieces of thinly sliced pork, together with some sweet onions laced upon a bowl of short and fat Japanese rice. It was most delectable. Pity it was slightly dry. I would have liked to have the dipping noodle sauce in the rice.

The set came together with some pickled cucumbers and radish, which I assumed should be eaten with the udon. Those pickles were eye-squintingly sour, but goes very well with both the rice and the udon.

There was also a small serving of dessert, namely nata de coco and a quarter of tinned peach. A great finish to a great meal. The set comes with either hot or cold green tea. With the price tag of RM18.50 a set, it was very reasonable, and the portion is above average. Most recommended!

Visiting Arata Japanese Noodle House on the same day twice proves how much we enjoyed the food there. In the early evening, wifey and I brought parents-in-law to sample the dishes there. The noodle as usual, doesn't disappoint. It was cooked well, full of mouth bounce. I must rave about the chashu. There were three large pieces, with a good amount of fatty and lean meat. The fatty bit melts in the mouth, and the lean meat as extremely tender and juicy, well marinated as well. A boiled egg, cut into halves before being served. I thought the yolk was a bit too hard, as I was expecting the yolk to be slightly runny, but it was still OK. There were some seaweed, two types actually. One which was the crunchy type, and the other one where you find in soups. A good handful of spring onions adorns the bowl, giving it a good flavour. The soup was amazing, not MSG-ish at all. Not too salty either. Priced at RM19 per bowl, it was definitely well worth the amount paid.

Crunchy and freshly fried, it was a good accompaniment. A piece of lime was in the bowl of udon, presumably to give it a slightly tangy taste. The sauce is not too salty, and it was filled with juicy and tender pork slices. There were also lots of sesame seed and chopped spring onions floating in the sauce. Priced at RM17, it was a decent amount to pay.

Almost all of the seating arrangements were booths to ensure privacy, except for some two seater tables by the side. The booths can seat four people quite comfortably. The shop was pretty roomy as well. According to brother-in-law, it had a very Japanese feel to it, although the eateries in Japan tends to be smaller and had less space.

On every table there was a rectangular box containing chopsticks and ladles for the udon. There was also a bottle of chilli flakes for those who wants some spice in their udon. A box of tissue for those who need them as well. A copy of the menu is also provided.

An excerp from the menu reads, "The mix of modern and traditional. We are pleased to serve you the traditional taste of udon with modern concept and method. Welcome and please enjoy our udon culture." I thought it was a pretty good message to summarise all they had to offer.

The kitchen is an open concept whereby we can see the food being prepared. Seems that the chefs are mostly Japanese, as we heard them conversing in their native language. By then, I was expecting to get a really good bowl of authentic udon noodles.

I saw one of the chefs kneading some dough and putting it through a machine. I was curious, and asked one of the waiters. It seems that the udon in this restaurant is freshly prepared for every bowl. Intrigued, I decided to take a closer look.

After chef was done kneading, he put the dough into a machine which automatically flattens and chops the dough into equal sized strips. The machine made quick work of it, which will probably take hours if done manually. After a while, my order came. I ordered the butaniku udon, which is essentially udon in soup with seasoned pork.

I was definitely not disappointed with the dish. The aroma of the dish blew me away. It had the well-cooked smell of freshly prepared noodles, with a whiff of pork. The soup was devoid of any MSG, but nevertheless it was full of flavour. The udon is springy and full of mouth bounce. I can pretty much consume two bowls of noodles just by itself. The colour of the dish was slightly drab, but the chopped green spring onions enhanced its look. The pork was thinly sliced, and every bite melts in the mouth, juicy and tender. There were some cooked onion in the soup as well, which gave it a good taste. The portion wasn't very big, hence for the price of RM15.50 per bowl, it wasn't extremely cheap. However, it is quite worth it given that the environment and service was pretty decent. Overall, a good dining experience. I will definitely return to try out other dishes as well.

Arata Udon is the signature udon that came with three pieces of char shu, seaweed, egg, vegetables and spring onions. The Japanese char shu was big slices and it was soft, well balanced with fats and lean meat, slightly salty. The udon was very springy. The soup has absorbed all the essence of the char shu that made it so flavourful, sweet yet salty at the same time.

Arata udon and tendon set is indeed quite a big set, it came with a bowl of plain udon, and rice with tempura. The tempura consisted of prawns, long bean and fish fillet. They were layered with some sweet sauce. The coating was slightly soggy. The prawns were fresh and succulent, while the fish were fresh too. The udon came with seaweed and spring onions, although plain but the soup was flavourful. I ate till so full!
