Like most buffets, 798 practices the self-service culture .I have been here for countless time, but so far I only tried 2 types of soups which are Herbal soup and Spicy soup. For those who wants something to spice up your buds, go for the spicy one. One of the reason I enjoy myself so much at 798 is that diners will be provided with personal pots ,which means more hygienic.

Sometime we just have to forget about the calories girls.

Overall this restaurant is simple and the environment is nice enough for us. Definitely will come again for a heartily filling.

Firstly, I would like to say that I appreciate the varieties of soup, meat and sauces. This is something that I believe no other shabu-shabu has done. Firstly, I would like to say that I appreciate the varieties of soup, meat and sauces. This is something that I believe no other shabu-shabu has done. Furthermore, I would also like to point out that the meat was really fresh, consistently sliced and well portioned. However, the only issue I had was the soup. It was bland, almost tasteless.

The Tomyam soup which I tried was just spicy, it had no sourness or anything else. The Wintermelon soup only gets better as you keep cooking different variant of ingredients together. Having said that, the soup was still not quite there. Pork Bone Clear soup had no sense of Pork Bone, felt like it was just clear chicken stock soup. Herbal soup was pretty disappointing as well. I've yet to tried the other 5 soups because they were unavailable on that day.

The sauce wasn't exactly something new to me, but its nice to see a restaurant having such varieties of sauces. Anyway, I really liked the Green Chili. It was spicy and tangy at the same time. Wasn't a fan of the other sauces but apparently, I was supposed to mix and match different sauces together to create a whole new flavour. But I couldn't do it, it was just too much for me.

Having said that, the choices of vegetables, fishballs, meatballs, crabstick, noodles were all very good. Not to mention they were also very fresh. Their drinks menu were pretty good as well. I personally loved the Waterchestnut drink. One last issue was the ice cream. They were horribly diluted. If only they were to change to a different supplier or perhaps recipe, it could be much much better.

Seafood are currently still unavailable due to the difficulty of maintaining freshness and price. However, there will be new upcoming menu/ingredients to the restaurant in the near future.

Buffet Lunch: RM29.80++ per pax (11am-5pm)
Buffet Dinner: RM39.80++ per pax (5pm-11pm)
All prices are subjected to 10% service charge.
Any 100gram wastage would cost you RM10.
A time limit of 100minute per table. An additional RM30 will be added for every 30minute extension.
Children below 7 years old will be free of charge.
Children between 90-140cm or below 12 years old, senior citizens above 60 will be entitled for 50% discount.

Overall, I believe the price are pretty standard. I personally think if only they were to improve the soup, just the soup, their business would be fantastic. However it may seem, I would really want to express my gratitude to the owners of 798 Shabu Shabu for this hangout. I may have hated the soup but I truly believe that they will improve it and one day, I will return to try again.

What I love is Shabu Shabu where every seat comes with a solo pot with mini electrical induction cooker. I love to be in this way is because you can have your own choice of soup to your preference as well as it is a more hygienic way of enjoying the steamboat too.If you are meat lover, you will fall in love with 798 Shabu Shabu. The selection of different types of meats are available where we beef slices, chicken slices, pork slices, dori fish slics, lamb slices, venison slices as well as the abalone slices

Not only they have a variety types of meat, they do serves many other choices of selections too where you can find a variety choices of mushrooms, fishballs and vegetables at their buffet corner. Variety of fishballs which includes the lobster meat fish balls, meatballs, pork balls and even more.

Overall the steamboat variety is not much a choice for me, and as I ordered tomyam soup, it is very spicy and at the end I ended just scooping the ingredients without taking the soup.

First of all, why 798? 7 stands for seven types of meat, 9 being nine types of broth and 8 for eight types of sauces. A recommended sauce would be a mix of beancurd sauce, chilli flakes in oil, fried garlic, coriander, a dash of sesame oil and vinegar. Next to it is sour and spicy sauce, usually the default sauce containing blended chillies which was decent.

At first I thought the peanut sesame sauce would taste weird but I was wrong. Not only the nutty and sweet sauce is good on its own, dipping them with meat slices and meatballs were surprisingly a good match.

Suki sauce is not a standalone sauce, hence feel free to mix with other ingredients to create your personal favourite dipping sauce. It has a sweet and hint of sourness as original taste without additional mixing ingredients.

Moving on to the most important shabu shabu elemnt- the broth. I had winter melon broth (2nd row, left), mild sweet taste but winter melon flavours were not appealing. However, the soup became gradually sweeter with addition of meat slices and vegetable. We agreed and commented that the pork bone broth (1st row, right) and tom yam broth (2nd row, right) needs more improvement as broth is a basic criteria to a good shabu shabu experience. Both of them lacked flavours it should have, we can’t taste any apparent pork bone flavours nor sour kick for the latter. The only left would be herbal soup, very light in herbal essence thus not the best we have had.

The waterchesnut and loh han guo herbal tea earned some brownie points as I prefer this kind of healthy Chinese drink to be served in a buffet style restaurant. Personally, I love the pleasantly sweet yet refreshing waterchesnut drink. Lime juice that looks thick enough was well accepted by another foodie as it did not disappoint too.

Apart from the usual fishballs, worth mentioning meatballs or other hotpot ingredients would be cheese tofu, bursting pork/beef ball and stuffed fishballs with minced pork. So far there is no ‘overly frozen’ taste in those meatballs hence freshness and quality is well assured, I hope this will continue for long term benefit as well.

Judging from the quality and variety of food and beverages offered, the price is pretty reasonable and worth trying. 798 Shabu Shabu is conveniently located opposite of Celcom Blue Cube or a short walking distance from Starbucks.

The desserts weren't really worth mentioning, truth to be told. I was expecting something great or at least something similar to Yuen's Steamboat but their ice-cream highly disappointed me. The extra toppings of coco-crunch was even more satisfying than the ice-cream itself. Extremely bland and so diluted it melted into water in seconds.

The amount of fresh seafood, meatballs and mushrooms are of no exception either. They actually provided so much more than Sukiya, and a few special ones which are probably created by 798 Shabu Shabu specifically, since I've never seen them at any shabu shabu outlet elsewhere. Try their yam balls/ham!

I really love the sausages! Some were black pepper sausages and others had over-flowing goodness of cheese in it. Fishballs were undoubtedly fresh too and didn't had any grainy or raw texture to it. On the other hand, their 'fu chuk' felt too thick and was hard to even bite after soaking it in the soup for minutes.

I love that they had crisp seaweed though, when cooked it was like soft, clumped up seaweed that I used to had with fish ball noodles back in Subang.

My small little pot reminded me of the one from Mizi's Puchong, which utilized similar boiling pots and mechanism. I set my pot to boil at Level 3, which got my ingredients cooked up and boiling bubbles in minutes.

Top right; Winter Melon Soup, Top Left; Pork Bone Soup
Bottom right; Tomyam Soup and Bottom Left; Herbal Soup.

The variety of soups that we managed to try so far! Nobody tried Pepper Soup at all hahaha wtf. I chose Herbal soup, which turned out quite bland.. The steamboat restaurant near my home had a better soup base. Tomyam soup wasn't even that spicy either, and the pork bone soup tasted like clear soup. It was nice to drink a clean and light soup base once in a while but as of that moment, there wasn't enough kick of flavors within the soup.

The place itself may not be an outdoor location of dining but it has an al fresco feel to it due to the sunshine being able to penetrate into the softly lit restaurant and a retractable awning with transparent roof on the inner part of the restaurant for those times when the sun doesn't shine that brightly.

The number 798 from the name of the restaurant signifies 7 types of meat slices, 9 types of soup base and 8 types of special sauces.

There is a large and wide variety of meat items, vegetables and noodles including some eggs spread out in a salad bar fashion for you to pick till your heart's content to add in to your hot pot:
