Most of the people staying nearby Damansara Uptown & Damansara Utama should be familiar with their existence by now. They have been operating in this area for 2 years now, but it is too shame for me that I never had time to drop by this Japanese Restaurant before. Finally, here I am for lunch. It is run by a Hong Kong chef who has the love for Japanese cuisine. After working in the F&B industry in Hong Kong for years, he decided to move his restaurant business to Malaysia as he fell in love with the laid back and relaxed environment in Malaysia. Wakon Japanese Restaurant is located Damansara Uptown (Next to Frisson Coffee). Wakon has a very simple menu which mainly consists of grilled dishes such as Pork Neck Skewers, BBQ Squid, BBQ Chicken Wings and many more. On top of these, Wakon offers ala carte menu such as rice options, ramen and their signature such as Black Truffle Mixed with Udon. The ambiance of the place was simple and comfortable Japanese Izakaya-style interior. They have 2 types of seating area. Open spaced dining seating area and private room.

Wasabi Gyoza has a nice twist to it. Yeah!! Perfectly Pan-Fried Gyoza with creamy Wasabi on top rather than dipping it with shredded ginger and vinegar. It was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. In additional, Wasabi really adds an additional kick to it. The best thing about it is that the flavour was not too strong and it is suitable for everyone.

BBQ Pork Belly was super good. It smells so tempting that will make you loose your patient in taking picture. It was juicy and tender and just melts in my mouth. It is one of my favourite parts in the pork and I guess most of us love Pork belly right??

BBQ Pork Neck Meat was tender and caramelized perfectly. They use an electric charcoal to prepare the skewers instead of real charcoal to avoid having the smoke trapped inside the restaurant and to ensure customers enjoy the food in a good ambiance. Who like to dine-in in a smoky place right??

Everyone loves Chicken Wing. What if told you that it is something extra special that you gonna be crazy about it?? (If you are a crazy fan of Tobiko as well?? Yeah!! Their chicken wing is stuffed with Tobiko and my first impression was "WOW, damn good, how they do it" The chicken was tender, juicy and when you bite it, the Tobiko just burst in your mouth "WOW"

However, before they shrink the portions, they served in larger size which is at higher price. They had adjusted it to suit the Malaysian budget for outside dining.

For those who are tight in budget, you might opt to visit this place after 930pm. They served most of the ala carte foods in discounted price.

I had been a fan for their salmon head. It is always not overly done, which I find that you have to really spend time and grill the salmon head with more than 20 minutes. Not like some particular Japanese restaurant which they served you with the whole fish head looks like charcoal, or the fish head is stinky due to some part at the inner side was not properly cook. I consume the fish eye, which I can tell you which fish is fresh and which is not.

Also, the pork bone soup udon served at Wakon is a limited dish, as the salmon head as well. Both these dish is not easily available, especially the pork bone soup udon only have 20 serving per day, and the salmon head will only be available if they had fresh salmon flew in from their supplier.

Their skewers are equally good. Especially if you like the pork neck with rice cake... or the truffle oil mushrooms...not to forget their awesome stuffed ebi chicken wing. If you like to try their new food, sometimes they have daily special. I had tried their fresh hotate shashimi, in which you won't find the same taste at any other high class japanese fine dining.

It was raining very heavily today and since I just washed my hair in a saloon in Uptown, I decided to come check out this row of shophouse. I wanted to try Fat Spoon but my friend thought it normal so we went to restaurant next to it. The food at Wakon was quite pricey though the waiter was very friendly. The interior is quite cosy. There were a few tables eating.

I  browsed through the menu several times but could not decide what to order since we were on a budget and everything was so expensive.

My friend ordered a white rice (RM 5) and Chicken Wing Yakitori (RM 4.90) which were so tiny and seems to disappear in a one bite. He also ordered the BBQ Pork Yakitori (RM 9.90) which was so succulent and juicy.

I finally decided to order the signature udon soup (RM 7.90) which came in the tiniest unexpected portion. The soup looked like there was some milk cooked together.

I also ordered the Sake Cod Fish (RM 24.90) which the other table ordered. The portion was again very small. The fish was very thinly sliced, the thinnest I have ever eaten for steamed or grilled fish in a restaurant. I though thinly sliced fish is the method reserved for raw sushi or sashimi? I guess I was wrong then. Strangely, I did not taste any wine or Sake flavour in the fish and I wonder if they have put in enough sake to flavour it?

Although our bill came up to RM 54, our stomachs were not that satisfied due to the small portions Malaysians are not used to.
