Burgerland Smile Mar 12, 2014

The balance between art & commerce takes on a new meaning at BurgerLand

Our top bet at BurgerLand: The Mighty Reunion, featuring juicy-fried chicken thigh, grilled chicken, house-made fish fillet, egg & the works. Messy but scrumptious in a tower-of-sin way. It's interesting to note that BurgerLand currently serves no beef patties (forgot to confirm why).

Rendang chicken & egg burger, exactly what we'd expect of it. Patrons can also customize their burgers; that's something to experiment with if we ever want to courageously/foolishly partner our rendang chicken with mayo, mushrooms, cheese & coleslaw.

Curly fries, to be matched with Sriracha-laced mayo. All in all, possibly worth checking out if you're in Klang or only 30 minutes away via the Kesas highway.

Portuguezze Kitchen Smile Mar 12, 2014

Categories : Asian Variety | Food court | Seafood

This inconspicuous enterprise opened this year in the thick of Sungei Wang Plaza's third-floor Food Emporium, run by a family from Malacca.

Staples of my southern hometown's most cherished traditional cooking are accounted for here, from Nyonya claypot chicken pongteh ...

Mutton curry seku. Feels like honest, home-cooked fare, suitable for two light eaters.

Pineapple prawn curry, a Eurasian favorite that's a real pleasure with steamed rice.

Portuguese grilled fish, stingray enveloped in a sambal of kaffir lime leaves, all at food-court-appropriate prices of little more than RM10 per serving.

Other fowl options: the can't-fail devil's chicken curry that's punishingly/pleasurably fiery

the lightly sour ambiler kacang of long beans with chicken

sehbak, a spicy braised chicken salad with lots of lettuce.

chuan-chuan fish, deep-fried & simmered in black bean paste with ginger.

Have always adored sambal belacan. Suitably fiery spices here; chili-wary customers can petition the kitchen to ease up on the heat.

Sevencups Smile Mar 12, 2014

You know those scenes where a thirsty deer approaches the edge of a pond & drinks the water, content & completely at peace? That's how we felt after hoofing it to Seven Cups, a sanctuary that deserves to draw herds of doe-eyed, coffee-desirous devotees.

The cafe itself is deliberately spare & distraction-free, serving (for us, at least) as a reminder to remove both the physical & emotional clutter from our lives. It feels fresh & familiar all at once; Seven Cups' sole dubious decision is putting Lana Del Rey's 'Born To Die' on its playlist, much to our sunset-time sadness.

If Seven Cups' innate cheeriness isn't sufficient to sweeten your day, its pineapple cheesecake & lemon slice should. Seven Cups is meant to be a coffee-&-cakes cafe; while a quiche could make the occasional cameo appearance, holding our breath for Eggs Benedict might prove futile.

Psst, here's a secret: Cafe co-owner Eve Von & her team sometimes conceal stashes of cake behind the counter for their personal consumption. If no carrot cake or red velvets seem visible, thick-skinned customers could attempt to very gently coax them out.

The coffee's a choice one; Seven Cups currently uses Singapore-based Nylon Coffee roaster's Four Chairs seasonal espresso blend, showcasing the labor of farms in Nicaragua & El Salvador.

Eve Von was initially lukewarm about having affogato on the menu, but we're grateful that cooler heads prevailed. On the other end of the thermometer, hot chocolate's also available, constructed with cocoa from Bangsar's Dip N Dip.

Bistro Richard Smile Mar 12, 2014

Categories : European | Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops

Lakeside dining with a French flavor at Bistro Richard, a nice recent addition to the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center's limited F&B scene.

Can't get more French than escargot, right? RM25 before taxes. Always fun.

Other European faves are available too, like Veal Milanese (RM42), bread-crumbed & butter-fried.

Coq au vin (RM35), a reasonably well-prepared rendition of the classic chicken recipe braised in Burgundy red wine, with beef bacon, broccoli & mushrooms.

Steak-lovers, have your beef here with truffle-tinged mashed potatoes, asparagus & ratatouille in a Cognac-laced morel sauce.

Sweets are simple but satisfactory, from chocolate chantilly mousse with berries (RM20) ...

... to crepe suzette (RM18) ...

... to the ubiquitous creme brulee (RM18).

Or ask the bartender for his recommendation, maybe this mix of blue curacao, rum & triple sec.

I'm Not A Chef Smile Mar 12, 2014

Categories : Chinese | Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack | Desserts

It's a bit off the beaten track, but this cool cafe with a memorable name is worth visiting, thanks to the efforts of co-owners Natalie & Stef, two friends with a heart for good food & friendly service.

Nat hails from Miri, so a variation of Sarawak's kolo mee is one of the specialties here, topped with minced chicken, braised egg & sliced mushrooms. No pork, but no matter; it's satisfyingly tasty nevertheless.

The noodles come with accompaniments including a nourishing soup for only RM5.50.

The menu here is a mix of both East & West; a heartily enjoyable lamb burger is available alongside everything from pancakes & omelets to paratha & black pepper udon, with many items priced under RM10.

Save space for desserts; a counter full of them includes the likes of this fresh-tasting apple pie, warmed up for sweet gratification & served with vanilla ice cream.

Red velvet, available in both in sliced cake & cupcake form.

Carrot cakes, chocolate cakes; we only had a small taste of some of these, but we liked them.

Croissants, muffins, puffs & more; it's a carb-lover's fully baked fantasy.

Caffeine: I'm Not A Chef offers Puro Fairtrade coffee & tea.
