Jap food again OK Oct 24, 2012
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Hotel Dining | Seafood

The Restaurant: Located within The Intermark Mall (KL) is the third branch from its original outlets (Mizu Japanese fine dining). Kin no Mizu offers both the classic and modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine and the freshest ingredients as always.

Environment/interior-decor:
Kin no Mizu décor is different, it’s modern with alluring blue light and water here and there gives off a different experience. I visited the place on a Sunday afternoon and it was quiet.

Menu: Since its lunch time, there are variety of set lunches to choose from in addition to daily specials and the a la carte menu. (yes; they have set lunches on a weekend)!

Food:
(Pardon the poor quality of the pictures & I can’t remember the food price)

Grilled cod with salt set

Comes with the usual, fruits, chawanmushi, miso soup, salad and rice. The set as a whole is just so-so. The rice is soft, properly separated. Chawanmushi smooth, properly seasoned. Miso soup was out of the ordinary with potatoes and slightly sour aftertaste. Cod fish, very lightly seasoned and was slightly moist. I felt that the cod was not that fresh. The texture and flavour felt like it was defrost frozen cod or air-chilled cod that was kept in the freezer. sad

Sashimi with tempura set

The sashimi I believe were salmon, tuna and pickled mackerel. The sashimis were fresh and of decent cut. The tempura was on the good side, light crispy battered, seasoned and of good size. Chawanmushi, rice and soup similar as stated above.

If you realised they didn’t gave me grated radish for my tempura sauce.
and
Oh yes, there was a small cockroach in my miso soup (how lovely). shocked

Green tea ice cream (no pics) was lovely, creamy and palatable. The colour was lovely matcha green and the matcha flavour was strong enough.

Service:
Adequate service, though the staff is not alert. Perhaps the dim lighting makes them sleepy. I asked for the menu a few times and I need to call them to refill my tea a few times as well. They didn’t apologize for the small roach. They were somehow more attentive towards the international couple.

Verdict:
The price for each set is from Rm 40-ish above. I was somewhat disappointed with the whole experience as I expected better. The aspect of set lunches on weekends with a variety of choice might excite you. However, if you were expecting something out of the ordinary, I reckon the a la carte and daily special might be a better choice. Besides that, if you are for set lunches other Japanese restaurant fares better even at a lower price. Luckily I paid only Rm40 for these; I would not be happy to pay the full price.

*Ps: Be aware of their operating hours.

A touch of Italian  Smile Oct 24, 2012
Categories : European | Restaurant

The restaurant: Ristorante Porto Romano is a hidden gem of Italian cuisine located within Intermark Mall.

Environment/interior-decor: Elegant and comfortable.

Menu: A variety of Italian dishes. Many of which are crowd favorites ~! An extensive list of wines, beers, cocktails and drinks.

Food:
Pizza Al Toro:
God knows why I never took pictures of it (perhaps to hungry). The pizza I ordered was decent, but not something exciting. You will get bored after a few bites. It was however not dry and given a generous amount of toping.

Pasta Nera Con Calamari

Also known as Squid Ink Pasta. The pasta here is the bomb! Freshly made, the fettuccine was al dente, subtle yet bursting with seafood essence. They are generous with their seafood as well. lol

Spaghetti alla Carbonara

Also known as spaghetti carbonara was lovely. Rich, creamy, so flavourful and al dente makes it a wonderful experience. tongue

Tiramisu
We were greedy! Haha. By this time we were stuff full but yet we just have to try their desert. Tiramisu was acceptable, the sponge finger layers weren’t that dry, but more mascarpone cream would be better.

Service: Good and their staff were polite. They were knowledgeable with their menu. smile

Verdict: The chef here has the golden touch towards pastas! I have not venture into their other offerings but I reckon it should be good as well. Since I used voucher, I paid roughly about Rm60-ish for all of the above. I will go again, lovely ambience, friendly staff and delicious food! lol

An afternoon tea for two Smile Oct 23, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Burgers / Sandwiches

Environment: What is there to talk about Delicious’s environment. Everyone knows its comfortable, casual yet upscale. I shall proceed on commenting about the food.

Food:
3-tier afternoon teaset

3-tier afternoon teaset

Delicious afternoon tea set is an impressive 3-tier array of eye pleasing mulessus. Each tea set comes with two cups of either tea or coffee with a biscuit at the side. Besides that it comes with 3 kinds of sandwiches two each, 2 duck confit pastry, 3 scones, 2 chocolate truffles, 4 tomato biscuits, 2 chocolate strawberries stick and a desert of choice from the counter.

Sandwhiches:
3 flavours; each composing of only bread and filling. The sandwhiched bread seems to be of gardenia brand, based on its texture and taste. The fillings are scrambled egg, smoked salmon and Japanese cucumber. Decent sandwhiches, nothing out of the ordinary.

Scones:
The scones did not reach the standard of good scones. I have tasted better ones from smokehouse; Cameron Highland. I won’t lie, it is still decent enough but there are better ones out there. The scones had crumbily biscuit texture, not dense enough and are missing that lovely butter aroma and flavour. The accompanying jam and whipped cream is well accompanying.

Duck confit pastry and tomato biscuit:
I actually do not remember the name of these biscuit and pastry. The biscuits have reddish hue with a light tomato flavour. While the duck confit pastry is quite oily, little bit spicy and savoury. One would not realised it is duck meat.

Chocolate truffle and strawberry stick:
What is there to say about strawberry on the stick and chocolate. Chocolate truffle on the other hand smooth in texture, rich and dense like all chocolate truffles are.

Desert of choice;
We chosen chocolate brownies, and it’s a good chocolate brownie it is. The brownie was chewy, chocolatey with an adequate amount of walnut and topped with generous scoop of vanilla icce cream, drizled with velvety melted chocolate.

Service: Service could have been better, but there were so many customers and they were short hand of staff. Take note to make reservation.

Verdict:
Generous serving for an afternoon tea. If you up to pay for Rm 60ish and no idea where to go, Delicious is the place. There are better afternoon tea experience in terms of ambience elsewhere but at a higher cost like Twinings ,Harrods,Mandarin hotel etc. I paid Rm 35 instead of the usual price with the use of vouchers. I might reconsider having it again.

Cakes Galore  OK Oct 23, 2012
Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack | Bakery / Cake / Kuih

The carpenter's daughter is a cosy, cheerful neighborhood bakery and cafe. It takes pride on using only organic and no preservatives in their goods. tongue

As you can see I had a galore of deserts! lol
People if they have their choice would of course prefer organic and no preservatives food, especially when it is not too painful for their wallet. But does it taste as good as their counterpart? There are some hit and misses. Here goes:

Opera cake: The most expansive of the lots. Decent, sweet enough but the texture and overall flavor is missing something. There are better ones out there.

Chocolate cake?: Sweet and dense enough. The texture will remind you of a sponge cake trying to be a mud cake. However, not something that will stay on your mind for a long time.

Blueberry cheese cake: Decent and acceptable; similar to many other blueberry cheese cakes out there like secret recipe.

Lemon meringue: Not everyone cup of tea. Not everyone like sour-note deserts. The pastry crust is a huge let down, very very hard (no shortening I guess). Besides that, the crust is lacking in buttery flavour and aroma. The lemon curd is sweet and not to overly sour, while the merinque is soft with a nice crust.

Red-velvet cake: One of the best red-velvet cake I ever tasted! No joke! The sponge part has a decent taste and aroma of both coco powder and beetroot. Unlike many fake velvet cake out there which does not use beetroot, this does which is a plus point. Adding to that, like a true red velvet, they use cream cheese as a topping! (In my own opinion, this red velvet fares way better than Whisk cafe). lol

Apple pie: Argh! Hard hard hard pie crust! Probably they use the same batch for the lemon meringue. Nonetheless, the apple feeling is just normal, kind off similar to those you can find in a tin can.

Brownies: One of the star of the lot! lol Texture is soft yet chewy, exactly what a brownie should be like. The enriched taste of sinful chocolate and the almost crispy-ish texture of the brownie literally made made my day sweet.

Its Car time OK Oct 23, 2012
Categories : Western variety | Bar & Pub | Pizza/Pasta | Burgers / Sandwiches

The Restaurant: Super GP Caffee stands out for being the one and only motor sports theme café in south East Asia. A definite place for motorsport enthusiasts to meet up.

Environment/interior-decor:
Impressive once we step in. The place is loaded with motorsports memorabilia and bumper cars stickers on the wall. It also features a sweet collection of miniature car models. Smocking and non-smocking area are separated and there is a corner with cozy sofas for couples on the 2nd floor. A bar on the 1st floor, while the 3r floor overlooks the dance floor with shouts party! There are 2 snooker tables for entertainment on the 3rd floor.

We came on a Saturday night and it seems we are the only patron at that time (felt like I book the whole place). Some parts of the café can be a little hot.

Menu: Limited. On that day the menu seems to be 1/3 of their online menu. sad Their food compromised of the usual diner cum bar kind of food.

Food:

Mexican Pizza (Rm 18)

Pizza with marinara base topped with beef pepperoni, nacho beef mix, tortilla chips, and melted mozzarella. Sounds and look good! The pizza was thin crust New York style which was a little too dry for my liking (Actually scraped my upper side of my mouth while chewing on it). The nacho beef mix is nice, really appetizing but the tortilla chips just killed the overall taste. The tortilla chips taste like chips exposed in the air for a long time. Which is a pity, there are hit and misses or else the pizza is appetizing enough.

Fish & Cheese burger (Front; Rm16); GP Burger (Back:Rm18)

Both are homemade 200g patty. Both burger buns were soft and fresh enough, however the fish burger was overly cooked and had a strong fishy smell to it. It smelled like near-expired fish which was out from the fridge for a long time. My eating partner agreed and there is no way we could continue eating. I complained to the waiter, who took it to the chef and the chef replied that it is fine. (I ate so many fish burgers elsewhere, and I know what near-spoilt fish smell and taste like). The fish fillet was also topped with cheese which also added to the foul-ness of the burger which might put some people off. mad

The GP burger, we chosen beef patty and is much much better (need to emphasize). Layered with cheddar cheese, beef bacon and fried onion rings taste pretty decent and acceptable. The beef patty is juicy enough, but is it that godly? I’m afraid no. smile

Drinks:

Oreo Milkshake (Rm 9)

Godly and Sinful!! The food so far doesn't cut it, but the milkshake sure hell do! Rich, creamy, dense and full of oreo, was just so good. tonguel

Service: Awfully slow. Perhaps due to lack of staff and huge space.

Verdict: It is easy enough to get parking after working hours. A good quiet place for drinks and to hang out. Would I go again, Yes only for their godly milkshake!
