Crispy Ayam Penyet! Smile Jan 30, 2012
Categories : Indonesian | Restaurant | Private Party

Our 3 favourite orders in any Ayam Penyet restaurant have got to be the ayam penyet drumstick, gado gado and bakso. Crispy fried crushed chicken is so good that you can even eat it on its own, without any rice. The ayam penyet platter has - cucumber, slices of very thick raw cabbage that I don’t eat, fried tofu and tempe, blanched kangkong and a bowl of soup.

The sambal is usually super spicy for my tastebuds so I will just take tiny bit of sambal to go with the chicken. I just love the crispy bumbu bits toppings on ayam penyet, super crispy!

The gado gado is a plate of diced cucumbers, tofu, blanched cabbages, taugeh, shredded lettuce, diced boiled potatoes, and with a lot of fried shallots sprinkles and assorted crackers drenched in sweet peanut sauce!! Almost equivalence of salad but with crackers, yay! tongue

Bakso is a bowl of beef balls with beefy broth and chicken slices, bihun and lots of fried shallots. The bakso here is good, the soup flavorful and the meatballs not rubbery.

We need a branch here in PJ! lol

Kolo Mee! Smile Jan 30, 2012

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles

Tried the thin Sarawak kolo mee and minced pork thick pan mee. The kolo mee doesn’t taste like real Sarawak Kolo Mee though because there’s no sliced charsiew but I got lots of sliced mushrooms, muk yee and crispy bits. Taste wise it’s okay; the noodle has the al-dente texture and taste.

There are 5 types of chili to choose from, sambal, ginger and chili, fancy chili, Indonesia chili and pickled green chili. Our favourite is the Indonesia chili flakes made with dried shrimp paste because it’s mild and goes well with our dried noodle. The toppings are generous and I liked the crispy bits that tasted like fried fish cakes. Munch!

They have lots of beverages choices too. We tried corn ice, which is basically shaved ice with gula Melaka syrup and a pile of sweet corn on top. They should come to PJ to open some branches tongue

Pub's Grubs OK Jan 28, 2012
Categories : Western variety | Bar & Pub | Steaks / Chops | Burgers / Sandwiches | Group/Family dining

Pub grub galore! Since I do not drink much, so I focus more on the snacks that go with the beers tongue

Pigs in blanket- tastiest of all, pork sausages wrapped in crispy bacon
Fried chicken wings- some wings had a slight funny salted taste, maybe the wings are not at the freshest
Roast pork ribs- quite charred when it landed on our table but quite nice to eat
Scotch eggs- eaten cold traditionally but I’m not used to that lolx
Sausages with chilis and onions- very very spicy until it brings tears to my eyes. I like the onions a lot though. tongue
Savory Meat Pie- quite nice but the pie crust is quite soggy
Cauliflower Cheese Bake- Classic dish that I do not like much because it's too heavy
Sausage Bun- just your usual pork sausage in bun
Fries- The fries are exceptionally good to eat with dips
Papadum with mint dips- just your usual 10sen papadum with fancy dips tongue

The service is great and the staffs are friendly. smile

Loved the way they decorated the restaurant with stuff that you will only see in kampung such as war era bicycles, tiffin carriers, chalk drawings, congkak, old school notebooks, Peter and Jane story books and other cute memorabilia. True to it's tagline: Food and Memories You Love

The menu is mixture of Local Favorites (Handmade Otak Otak, Roti Bakar, Rojak, Noodles, Nasi Lemak) Western ( Chicken Chops and Fish and Chips) and more than 60 choices of beverages and desserts!! You can view their cute menu on their website.

Fried otak otak pau- crispy layer of fried pau with spicy otak otak fillings. Oily but yummy!

Mee Bandung Muar- One of my favourite order during uni days, this dish brings back memories, the broth has strong sweet prawn flavour and the poached egg just runny enough. It will taste better if the soup is piping hot.

Dried curry chicken noodle- I like to order my dried curry mee with mee and koey teow because I like the texture of both noodle. Otak Otak Place’s dried curry mee has thick soy sauce mixed with the noodle, giving it a sweet taste. The curry is thick with santan, almost like a rendang. Yum!

Rose Float- 7-Up with syrup and a scoop of vanilla icecream- another beverage from high school time. There’s only one restaurant in Ipoh still serving this pretty drink. Slurp!

Will visit again for it's decent food and warm settings smile

Affordable yummy western food Smile Jan 27, 2012

Where to have cheap but decent western food in PJ The answer is Kitchen Creatures because it’s service and government tax free! Food portions are quite decent also for its affordable price.

My favourite order is the succulent grilled chicken chop and wild mushroom soup. The chicken chop is juicy with crunchy skin and the mushroom sauce is good stuff. The mushroom soup is light and earthy and perfect to eat with a basket of garlic bread (separate order). We’ve tried their pepperoni pizza too, it’s pretty normal tasting but they are generous with cheese toppings. I had their crème brulee and the custard it’s nice but the layer of sugar needs more torching. tongue

Great for special occasion dining or hang out with friends while enjoying yummy food and drinks!
