Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. Throughout its first weeks in business, Santouka kept running out of simmered pork cheeks before dinnertime, forcing us to keep returning until we finally secured our first taste of them. Worth the effort? Sort of; they're enjoyably tender, though not astonishingly so. Also, the sodium content in these seemed slightly too high. Steamed rice topped with egg & salmon roe. Sounded promising, but tasted plain.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. Completing our survey of Santouka's ramen flavors: the shoyu variety, made with pork broth & soy sauce. Not as memorably tasty as the shio & miso versions in our previous post. Spicy miso ramen, containing enough chili to tantalize but not torture. Gyoza stuffed with juicy chicken meat. Not sure why there isn't a pork version. So yeah, they've only got chicken & vegetarian gyoza! =)

I'm a huge fan of ramen, although I've yet to taste the real thing in Japan. But luckily for us there are several Ramen joints that have come all the way from Japan and Hokkaido Ramen Santouka was one of them.Locared in Pavilion KL Level 6, this place is always very busy. Though the night we visited we managed to get a table pretty quickly as it was near closing time. After looking through the menu. The noodles arrived pretty quickly. The first thing that attracted me was the 3 succulent pieces of Charshu, followed by the thick and creamy looking soup. On first sip though, I've discovered that the broth had so much salt in, it's almost impossible to sip. Though I heard that the Japanese don't actually drink the soup, so they actually do make the broth quite salty. But this much?

Moving on. The noodles were lovely though, thick, bouncy with a bite. I also loved the bamboo shoot. The Charshu unfortunately has the same problem as the broth. And that's not really forgivable. I could only manage 2 pieces before giving up. I felt like I had about a week's worth of salt and my blood pressure was shooting up!

No complaints about the Gyoza though, although it's still slightly on the salty side. Good bit of fillings and the skin was crispy at the bottom.

I've given my feedback to the staff and she said to ask specifically to reduce the salt next time. I'm not sure if there will be a next time. There are other ramen places with better offerings.

For our fast lunch, I’ve ordered the Shio Ramen in small size. The soup was indeed excellent and deserves a shout. It was light and creamy white, strong tasting and not too oily. The S portion is just nice for my petite stomach as well. Cha-shu is just too precious but it was well portioned with the noodle. One that differ Santouka from other ramen was the bamboo shoot which blends in well with the taste of the blunt noodle.

I ordered Hiyashi Chuka with premium pork cheek before 1pm, which is limited to a certain servings daily and was lucky that it was still available. The cucumber was uniformly shredded, and the layered eggs were nicely sliced. There were also bamboo shoots to top it off, with one whole boiled flavored egg divided into half! You could add in the mustard and mayonnaise if you like, but I prefer mine without them

The separate ingredients were to be added into the bowl of ramen, soaked in shoyu (if I'm not mistaken) and there! mix mix mix~ Add the eggs last because you don't want to ruin the beautifully boiled egg

The springy ramen was absolutely delicious and it is perfect for the summer heat (what my host mother in Japan told me). The pork cheek was very tender and just great! The only downside is that the food do not come cheap.

And so, tried the signature Kara-Miso Ramen set.
It came with Chawan Mushi, salad greens, mini char siew rice and green tea.

I actually enjoyed their salad. The dressing was light but zesty. I think they added some lemon juice in it with some butty bites. The accompanied corns, cherry tomatoes, salad greens, lettuce and many more. They were indeed fresh and crunchy

As for this Char Siew Rice, the meat is a bit dry and lean. But was aromatic with the added sesame and spring onion. Rice was fluffy.

This was first try of proper ramen; I decided to have the set lunch. Not cheap, at RM38++, but that's how such things are priced, so I just had to take it as it was.First task - finish off the unexciting filler salad. Pretty "bleh" ingredients of lettuce, red coral, corn, and cherry tomatoes. Not the worst ingredients, but not exciting at all. The sauce was nice though - tasted creamy and had some zing - I think there was wasabi in it.Next, onto the rice. The rice was starch and a little stick -

Next, onto the rice. The rice was starch and a little stick - may have been sushi rice or something similar. The char siew was sweet and lean (a little tougher than I would prefer, but not too tough; probably because it's very lean), and the onions and spring onions gave some crunch to it. Overall, pretty decent as a filler but not as a main (which it wasn't).

I have to say the broth is amazingly rich and full of salty porky goodness. Santouka prides themselves on their broth preparation methods, and it would seem justified. The pork is super tender and quite fatty, but it was just one measly slice! It was hardly enough to go with the noodles - I had to ration it very carefully. I would say that is the only real disappointment in this pricey lunch.

The chawan mushi was very light and eggy, and had juicy shrimp inside, which was a pleasant surprise.

It's very crowded and tight in the premise though. Don't quite feel very comfortable eating there.

Small @ RM22.50,
Regular @ RM25.00 and
Large @ RM29.00.
It will be best to pick Regular as additional of RM2.50 with extra piece of char siu and noodles.

The meal mix quite well where you can have the ramen first and after you complete the ramen, you can use the soup and pour your rice to served with the soup. I always like green tea whenever I'm in any Japanese restaurant. Same as this time. A big bottle of green tea and a glass of ice served when you order the cold type. If you order the hot type, a pot of green tea will be serve. Anyway, the restaurant also served you a complimentary ice water.

Shio Toroniku (small)-RM33.50
The soup base I chosen for Tokusen Toroniku Ramen is Shio (Salt Flavour). The Shio Ramen is mild and creamy soup seasoned with salt. It is the only ramen that is topped off with a Japanese pickled plum. I like it very much and it is not salty at all in case you will scare by the word salt flavour. I personally like Udon more than Ramen but this Ramen is superb. They choose to use the medium size noodle which have a good flavour and blend well with the soup. Must Try!

Shoyu Toroniku (large)-RM40
Shoyu Ramen Soup is made from a mixture of pork broth and soy sauce. Dried seaweed is used as a topping only for Shoyu Ramen to bring out its flavour. However, the taste more to the miso flavour and it is a bit salty.
