Affordable Western Food Smile Jan 28, 2014

Who doesn't love Western food? But the problem with it is it can be expensive. At Anmour Cafe, they have an American diner concept whereby food is served hot and fast. The interior is simple and surprisingly large as it can accomodate many people. Everytime I visit, there are always people queueing to enter. Their famous food is the pork burger and mini burgers. For RM15 or less, there are 4 mini burgers so it is not expensive at all! The service is also quite acceptable. I like that they serve buns dipped with gravy before the main course for free. I personally like the cheese baked rice! Perfectly melted cheese atop soft white rice, with rich Alfredo sauce and topped with seafood or ham. Appetizers are also quite big in portion so make sure you have someone to share it with. Most of the appetizers are less than RM10! So if you're looking for a nice environment to enjoy affordable western food, please check out this place! There is also another branch at Mount Austin!

Best Chicken Chop in Town OK Jan 27, 2014

If you haven't been to It Roo in JB town, you're missing out! They serve tender, traditioinal JB-style chicken chop served with either black pepper or mushroom sauce. You can opt to have it served grilled or fried. The main branch in town has been around for years. Recently, they have just opened a new branch in Taman Sutera Utama! The shop is definitely more spacious here, with more parking lots available and offers a casual interior design. Outdoor dining is available too. However, the price is more expensive here and the serving is also smaller. The taste is still consistent though. Be prepared to queue as there are many patrons especially during dinner time.

Authentic Indian Food Smile Jan 21, 2014

So you're looking for authentic banana leaf indian food in JB? Try Restoran Ashoka! In terms of finding the place, it can be a little tedious unless you're familiar with the small roads behind SSI. The restaurant is located in between some shop houses which makes it not so noticeable, so keep your eyes peeled. Who knew such a small place serves such good food! Very popular amongst office crowd during lunch time. One set of rice + 2/3 dishes is about RM7.50. It is buffet style so some people take more. I personally love the fried bittergourd and rasam drink! The stewed chicken, fried fish, lamb rendang and curry fish are delicious as well. The lamb is quite tender and the fish is cooked with a lot of spices so no fishy smell. Parking wise can be a little difficult due to space constrain but overall, it is a clean eating environment with good food.

One of the best laksas in Johor. The gravy is not too thick, just enough 'kick'. I prefer the thick meehoon as it is chewy and compliments the soup well. Price per bowl differs as you can choose your own ingredients, like cockles, mushroom, tofu, abalone and many more. You can opt not to add anything too as their 'standard' ingredients are filling enough. They are open from 12am-8pm except for public holidays. The stall is one of the ones provided by the Johor Sultan, alongside the famous Stulang goreng pisang, nasi lemak and indian food. Very clean, limited spaces and it is open air (but has big umbrella to shield).

Recommended Dish(es):  Laksa with thick meehoon, clear noodle soup

Big Bowl of Goodness OK Jan 30, 2014

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant

Just your regular shop lot interior, specialising in mee hoon kuay served in large bowls, hence the name. It is located near Sunway College so to avoid the working and student crowd, try not to visit during peak lunch hours. My personal favourite is the traditional soupy mee hoon kuay. The noodles are handmade and just so smooth compared to other places. The soup is quite normal, but when paired with condiments like anchovies, black fungus bits and vege, it is something to look forward to. Also, the fishball is really bouncy and yummy! Something I've never tried anywhere else that they have here is the green spinach noodles! A healthy alternative to regular noodles. They also serve mihoon, kuay teow and yellow noodles as mee hoon kuay alternative, and you can opt for it to be dry, or served in Tomyam soup. They also serve rice, porridge and mee hoon kuay paired with other ingredients. For a very reasonable price, you can have a filling and yummy lunch.

Recommended Dish(es):  Traditional mee hoon kuay, fish porridge, fish slice soup noodles
