Dishes for the quick lunch  Smile Sep 28, 2013

Melur and thyme serves fusion and is already nicely portrait with the fusion name of both melur and thyme. A local and western fusion. So is their dishes with a great array of choices to pick from. The seating and the interior of this place is very comfortable and suitable for casual short break of tea or coffee with very lovely views and sights, depending on where you are seated. You can always pick your seat when there is not much crowd but chances would be low during peak lunch hours. The restaurant caters to the office crowd around this area and the choices of menu is interesting for both communal and solo lunch.

The sang har mee was really fantastic and I thought the portion is slightly huge because there were lots of ingredients in it. The generous ingredients are not really a bad thing but having a lot of ingredients alone is not enough affirm the taste of this noodle. The broth and the thick gravy to the noodle make this a very comforting dish to order.

The aglio Olio also serves with very fresh ingredient, something I really like seeing in fusion restaurants. Most that I have been failed to have a good quality control over the ingredients used when they have to have so many ingredients to meet the demand of the varieties offered in the restaurant. Another dish they should be bragging is the Duck satay and it was lovely to fuse duck meat with the spices for satay.

Comforting porridge Smile Sep 01, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Porridge

Whenever I’m sick or feeling like I am losing my appetite, I always have craving for porridge. I guess porridge became a staple food for those without any appetite to eat. Decent ones are difficult to locate, but recently I found one I thought was pretty decent and palatable. It was served as individual claypots and the porridge texture was thick and not too diluted, just the way that I like it.

I ordered the Teng Chai porridge, and I requested to add on salted egg, and you tiao. They have got other stuff like the red bean bun, glutinous rice bun, and the ma jiao. But I didn’t order those because I didn’t felt like I could finish my food.

The ingredients in the porridge were really generously served. Lots of century egg as well as crab stick. I thought it was genius to have raw crab stick slightly stirred into the porridge instead of cooking it in the porridge. That’s why the texture of crabstick somehow remained chewy. I love the salted egg in the porridge. Most places won’t have such generous amount of salted egg.

If porridge alone is too bland, do try the fried fu chuk. Amazingly appetizing due to the crispy outer layer. Fish paste wrapped in it was a little brine when eaten alone, but it complimented the porridge well.

Lastly, I finish the meal with a cup of Cham ( a mixture of tea and coffee). Smooth milk tea with a slight touch of coffee makes a perfect Cham. Since I am not so much of a coffee person, I like it a lot because this is a slightly softer and smoother version of coffee.

The Teng Chai porridge cost Rm 6.50, with Rm 1 extra for additional salted egg. You tiao is Rm 1.40, and fried fu chuk cost me Rm 5.50. So the total price I paid for the meal was almost Rm 18 including service tax. I thought it was okay, and I definitely will come back to them the next time I feel like eating porridge.

Vegetarian food is some fascinating recipe and what more are fascinating would be the vegetarian ingredients. These processed flours were so well done sometimes one couldn’t tell if it is real meat or not. In Shiang Hai vegetarian restaurant, the chef recommended dish is the sushi rolls. There is a wide variation of sushi and I picked Mango sushi and the Lettuce sushi. The texture of the ingredients rolled inside was very similar to actual sushi. One actually tasted like real ham. The mango sushi…..*inhales….* was breathtaking. Better than most fusion sushi.

Halal satay celup OK Aug 26, 2013
Categories : Malaysian variety | Restaurant | BBQ

Satay celup is a famous dish amongst Malaysians, especially Malaccans. As a matter of fact, satay celup has becoming a signature dish of the Historical city. My previous post of the Capitol satay celup elaborates most of what’s available there. They might have probably be one of the pioneer and popular satay celup in Melaka. And being the popular satay celup in Melaka, any other satay celup would inevitably being followed by a fair comparison to the Capitol. There were also few others, but I bet the Halal satay celup is rather rare.

Here I am in Bukit Beruang Melaka, in the Chucuk-Chucuk Halal Satay Celup whereby they serve more than just the typical satay celup. When mentioned satay celup, any fellow foodie would instantly tell the differences between the celup of Melaka style and anywhere else. This one interestingly offers a few bases for the celup (dipping/cooking) of which their best selling is ironically is the TomYum soup. The owner is really friendly and she explains how most Malay customers are not too familiar with the peanut sauce. Therefore most of them would eat from the pot of their choices of soup just like steamboat, except the ingredients are already skewered.
Talking about the dipping sauce and soup, I had the peanut sauce gravy which I thought was alright. The sauce is definitely different form the rest. It was nothing close to satay sauce, and nothing near rojak sauce. Definitely different from any ordinary satay celup sauces too. There were no texture of spices or grinded peanut in the sauce. Hence, I would describe the sauce being really smooth. And the fragrant of peanut aroma is extremely thick. So thick it kind of roams a bit longer, so peanut butter jam lover would instantly love this.

The selection of choices caters to almost everybody. Wide range of skewers preserved at low temperature and what I really like is the fine work on the skewers. They are a nicely done so each stick becomes real convenient for eating.

The boiling pots were really deep and slightly bigger in diameter compared to the usual and the sauce were filled right up to half full, reason being so it does not spill out of the pot when boiled. And if you look close, the dining ambience is really amazing. The broad table prevents the hot steam from hitting you and gives more space to dinners under a cooling atmosphere.
The skewers still has some limited ingredients because the restaurant is halal. Pork alone would have added on to many more choices of ingredients. But it offers the best of halal ingredients you can get. There is almost something for everyone. I see they’ve got something to get the kids to eat. This is the first time I see angry bird balls. Hmm….that didn’t sound right. But the assorted fancy designs and sausages would definitely got the kids going rather excited.

Less buzzing, more lazing Smile Aug 24, 2013

Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops | Burgers / Sandwiches

Some say best day of the week is Sunday. I say everyday can be the best day if we enjoy every bit of it. However, my recent Sunday has been amazing with endless good food. And you know what they say about the most important meal of the day.

I was in Publika’s Bee and I thought it is a better choice of Bee when it comes to the ambience and interior layout. Probably also because they have a more spacious outlet compared to the one in Jaya PJ. The seats are cozy and is pretty suitable for group hangouts with your friends or colleagues, as well as families.

There are also seats for the loners whom doesn’t like being disturbed rather just enjoying their meal and have some quiet time alone for themselves.Apart from that, there is sunlight for those preferring to get closer to the Mother Nature with plants and pots of greens around them. The outdoor layout is as comfortable as the ones indoor so it really is a simple personal preference.

For those who appreciate art and vintage creativity should check out the displays and accessories they have around the place. But what was more amazing that day was the huge portion they serve for breakfast. Or brunch, since the menu goes on till before dinner time. They aren’t cheap but there is effort done on the menu which I thought deserves a bit of appraisal. First was The Bee Breakfast, which consist of a little of everything a breakfast can have in one plate. Served with freshly squeezed orange juice and a cup of coffee, the meal cost RM 28. The plate consist of 2 eggs done to your preference (poached, fried, scrambled), oven roasted tomatoes, rancheros beans, Italian turkey bacon, smoked chicken and thyme sausages, parmesan- and -sage potato harsh and toasted Rustica bread slices.

Then there is the Ham and Egg Grilled Cheese Sandwich for those liking sandwich and wraps. There is the turkey ham, egg, melted cheddar cheese on a Pain de Mie white bread for RM 14.50. All those were awesomely served with a bit of Arugula on the side.

And the egg lover would find irresistible with the eggs dishes because in Bee’s, it’s not just your regular eggs menu. The Smoked Salmon Scrambled was generously served with lots of Salmon in the scrambled egg. I remember everyone started complaining about the huge portion halfway to finishing the food. For RM 22, the dish had eggs scrambled with Norwegian smoked salmon and cream cheese, with parmesan-and-sage potato hash and bread of the day.

Also, the Portobello mushroom and Swiss gruyere cheese omelette made a fairly great breakfast. Soft omelette filled with portobello mushrooms and bread of the day going at RM 21. Although I think they could be a little more generous with the mushroom and a little bit more stingy with the cooking time for the omellete. Also, it might be a little bland to those gotten too comfortable with stronger palate.

Of course, also on the list today are the Eggs benedict. The breakfast classic with Hollandaise sauce, poached eggs and Italian turkey ham on choice of healthy baked scones or bread of the day sells at RM 19. The things you could do with eggs are just amazing. I thought these breakfast dishes with eggs should have never been costing sky high prices but I guess sometimes we pay for the ambience, services as well as the effort of the chef. And not forgetting valuable companions while dining. I think those great memories are always priceless.
