Seafood Smile Oct 22, 2015

Pantai Seafood had been a favourite place to visit for some really good seafood. However it is not often we visit unless there is a special occassion, however when we are there the food usually lives up to the rather steep price tag that it comes with.

First we got a plate of stir-fried asparagus in belacan sauce to start. It wasn't amazingly good, but it was not terrible either. Each stalk of asparagus was nice and crunchy without being over-cooked, however the belacan sauce was incredibly weak.

Since we were there for crabs, this was easily overlooked the moment our main course arrived.

Black Pepper Crab was the first choice we got. The crabs were quite large, evident by their shell and also the pincer. Not only was it big in size but the meat was incredibly fresh and succulent, especially when you eat at the body section rather than the pincers. Plus the black pepper sauce had an amazing kick to it without being one dimensional.

This dish was amazing!

Just as I thought the first crab dish was good, this arrives and instantly I ignored the black pepper one. The smell of salted egg yolk was strogn and almost each piece of crab was nicely coated in it generously. Just like the previous dish, the crabs were large in size and also incredibly fresh.

Although the price we're paying is a ltitle high, but for the quality of seafood that we get and the taste I guess it's somewhat worth it. However it will not be an everyday occurence that is for sure.

Mom's treat Smile Oct 21, 2015
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Seafood | Ramen/Udon/Soba

Japanese food is something the mom & myself enjoy having from time to time. Since I had recently gotten my salary, I decided to treat her to a nice meal and it was no surprise that she suggested going to Sushi Zanmai. It had over time become one of her top 5 place to go to for good and afforable sushi.

It was a little over dinner time when we arrived so the place was not super packed which was something we preferred. Like always we requested for the booth seats so we can pick any sushi off the conveyor belt if we saw anything that caught our attention.

The first and must order for my mother is the Salt Grilled Mackerel. We both love this a lot because of how the nicely grilled fish had a crispy skin that's slightly salted and tangy from the lemon juice. Plus Zanmai's fish is always fresh without the overly fishy note which can be had at other places.

Another order which we never fail to get is the Ebikko sushi. Since I could finish two pieces by myself easily, we got two order to share as we have other dishes and would rather not be too greedy.

Although they were generous with the toppings, I was not too happy that the seaweed was soggy. To me, that's a sign that the sushi isn't freshly made like the kinds we could get off the conveyor belt, only we had just ordered it which is a little bit disappointing. However that did not stop us from finishing it all, right down to the very last fish roe.

Then we ordered the Sukiyaki with Beef. This is something my mother absolutely love because of the soup and all of it's ingredients in it. So we ordered this to share and enjoyed our tender slices of beef cooked in the sweet soup then dipped in egg for extra silkiness. We love this so much that there is usually nothing left by the time we are done with it.

Can't wait to go back for another round of sushi soon!

Dome's Cafe.  OK Oct 21, 2015

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Burgers / Sandwiches | Coffee | Business Dining | Group/Family dining

For lunch, the colleagues wanted something western for lunch so we made our way to Dome's cafe to grab some. I remember visiting this establishment when I was younger cause it was a family favourite, especially the pies and dessert. So I was definitely hoping to get the same kind of food that I did many years ago.

As always the service at Dome's is pretty good. The wait-staff greets you at the entrance and leads you to an empty table with a smile. No sour-faces to be had anywhere, plus they were all very attentive despite the place being quite crowded due to the lunch hour.

We ordered our food and I was slightly disappointed by what we got. Quality wise.

A friend got the Egg Hollandaise with ham. It sounded promising and the paoched eggs looked good when it arrived, especially napped with the creamy hollandaise sauce. Though one egg was way beyond overcooked which was off-putting especially when it's supposed to have a super runny egg yolk. After that, my friend barely finished this dish because the sauce was apparently bland so she was sorely disappointed with this as a whole.

Another colleague got the Creamy Seafood Pasta. At first I was thinking of ordering this too, but since they got it I decided against it so we can try more things. Though when the dish arrived I was secretly glad that I hadn't ordered this or else it'll be such a struggle for me to finish.

The seafood was scarce and tasted a little bit like the frozen kind. The sauce was WAY TOO CREAMY which made this dish so cloying that taking more than two bites felt like torture. Plus it was lacking in any sort of flavour other than those that came from the heavy cream that was used to cook the pasta in.

But that's just me I guess, cause the colleague thinks that it was still alright and managed to finish it.

As always, my go-to order is the Chicken Pie. This just brings back so many nostalgic memories of my mom feeding me this while I continued reading my book. So imagine my excitement when the dish arrived and it looked exactly the way it did in my memory.

The puff pastry was really good, crisp and buttery with every bite especially good when dunked in the stew inside. However we come to the not so pleasant part which was the filling in the pot. Not only were the chicken bits and other ingredients rather less than what I am expecting, especially considering how much I am paying for this dish. But the sauce was so watery that it borderlined soup rather than actual chicken stew.

Disappointing because I was really hoping that this will be as good as I remembered it to be. Knowing that I can make something much better at home without the price tag, I was even more disappointed.

Perhaps standards have lessened a lot over the years. But I think I would just stick to their sweet drinks like the hot chocolate rather than ordering their meals unless it improves.

DESSERT! Smile Oct 20, 2015
Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Seafood | Noodles

After dinner, I had a really strong craving for dessert. Not just any kind that we can easily get or is popular these days like the waffles & ice cream trend. I wanted nothing other than some Thai delicacy and since I was already nearby one, my friends and I decided to pay a visit to My Elephant.

Although I wish we had eaten there for dinner instead as the other diner's meals made me feel slightly envious. But I went straight for what my stomach wanted which were the sweet treats.

First we got the Mango with Glutinous rice. I really like the sweet mango and slight salty rice combination.

This resembles the sticky rice mango only without the coconut milk which was slightly disappointing, but that didn't stop us from finishing this plate entirely. Though given that the portion is probably enough for one person with a small appetite for dessets and for Rm8.50, it is a little pricey. But we ordered other desserts to share so it was easily overlooked.

We also ordered the Mango with Sago priced at Rm 6.50, because I was really in the mood for it. This one also reminded me of the sticky mango rice that we'd get in Thailand only instead of rice it's soft jelly-like sago. This also came with lots of coconut milk and was super slurp-worthy.

Then there's the Red Ruby dessert which is my absolute favourite when it comes to Thai desserts. Those crunchy chestnuts wrapped in chewy sago in a coconut milk 'broth' with shaved ice and also slices of jackfruit is the best thing ever created. Priced at Rm6.50, I thought this was pretty worth it as it was a moderate sized portion.

However this was SLIGHTLY disappointing because the coconut milk tasted a little odd to me. Rather than those that is freshly squeezed, it tasted like something out of the packet which was off putting to me. So I mostly just ate the jackfruit and also chestnuts cause those were the star of the dish.

A little underwhelmed  Cry Oct 20, 2015
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Pizza/Pasta | Burgers / Sandwiches

After getting my errands done for the day and replenished a few of my make up things at Sephora, I decided to get something to eat. Since it was a little after lunch hour I decided to visit Ben's again after a while and expected something better than I did my previous visit. However I was to be disappointed again.

Like stated at the entrance, I waited outside to be seated while I browsed through the menu. Though I sort of already knew what I want. But I stood there and looked around for a wait-staff for five minutes without anyone attending to me. There was not a person even checking to see if they had guests waiting outside. Then why put a 'please wait to be seated' sign so far out front?

Finally I gave up waiting and just led myself inside when FINALLY a wait-staff led me to a table. Rather than wait I just ordered immediately or else I'd have wasted more of my day then I would have liked.

Don't know why, I really wanted their Portobello Mushroom burger. A while ago a friend of mine had this and it tasted good so I was hoping for the same thing again.

But I was left sorely disappointed when my meal arrived because although it took a while, my burger was less than satisfactory. The bun was not properly toasted and was borderline soggy. Portobello mushroom was not hot and bland although the burger sauce made up for that ever so slightly. The whole thing was just disappointing to say the least.

The thing that I enjoyed the most of the meal was the fries that were nice and crisp, freshly fried I presume. Also the side salad was pretty good although quite little.

This meal just reminded me of why I have not visited Ben's in a really long time. Also proves that it was a good decision made and one I intend to stick by unless they improve their service & also quality of food.
