Lunch Set Smile Oct 05, 2015
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen/Udon/Soba

After running an errand and meeting a client, I decided to have my lunch at Bangsar before going back to the office. Plus I was being a little cheeky by taking my time before having to actually return to 'work'.

Since I was already there, I dropped by a favourite Ramen store to have a bite to eat and to enjoy their lunch set. Priced at Rm33, which I think is very affordable for Ippudo price standards, the meal comes with a bowl of ramen of your choice and a side of your choosing. There is a crab salad, sake mentai rice and chicken pao. Then the drinks is priced at half price from the menu.

I chose the Crab Salad for starters and I enjoyed it. The lettuce and sald was crisp with a nice amount of sesame dress topped with my favourite ebikko. Then the crab meat is also not too scarce which I enjoyed a lot of.

As always I got my favourite order of the Karakka- Men with pork belly slice. This has always been a favourite because I prefer this broth over the shoyu kind as this has more flavours, clearly they put in a lot of effort to their soup. Plus the spicy miso paste that comes with really gives an added kick to the dish in a more interesting manner.

This time I asked for the ramen to be cooked al dente but it was softer than what I asked for. When I told the waitress that served me, she told me that this was how it is supposed to be. But I clearly remember it having more of a bite so I don't feel too jelak from the mushyness. So I am wrong?

Although I've had amazing service at the Pavilion branch and also this one, I was a little surprised by how this one brushed me off as if I didn't know any better. Is it because of how I look or what? I was rather insulted and slightly put off my meal, though I slurped it all down so I make my money's worth.

Plus the ramen is still delicious even if I wish the noodles had a bit more bite to it. I'd still go back and hope for a better server the next time around.
Supplementary Information:
Lunch set is only available from 11am-3pm. Not too sure if it applies on weekend or not, but most probably no.

Japanese Dinner  Smile Oct 05, 2015

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops | Seafood | Ramen/Udon/Soba

Since a friend of mine stays in Old Klang Road, there's a lot of great food there that has been introduced by her. A favourite would be Xenri as it offers pretty good Japanese meals especially when we're in the mood to splurge a little.

Something that I like about this place is the staff, both the wait & kitchen staff. Firstly they are very attentive at the front of house - making sure that we are properly settled with green teas and warm towel while we look through the menu.

As for the kitchen staff, the chef that handles the front sushi bar is rather well-acquainted with my friend so he almost always gives us a plate of complimentary sushi when we are there. And it is never anything that is of low quality or anything of that sorts, so they get A++ for that. We started looking through the menu after indulging in some warm towel and warm green tea, the waiter brought over a plate of nigiri sushi that was beautifully plated. This was an exquisite salmon belly that was perfectly fatty and tender topped with a sweet sauce and a minimal amount of wasabi.

Now onto our actual meals, I ordered their Tempura & Nigiri sushi bento set. There were many others but most came with a bowl of rice which I was not craving for so this was the perfect one for me.Imagine my surprise when my meal arrived and how much of a feast it looked. As always the Japanese have this way of making every thing beautiful in it's own simplicity, like my set meal.

This comes with a bowl of warm miso soup, super soft chawanmushi and also a sweet end to the meal with two thick wedge of sweet watermelon that's bursting with juice.

My set comes with a plate of Nigiri Sushi that was incredibly fresh tasting on top of looking immaculately pretty. I was initially very reluctant to start eating this because of how nice it looked - I foolishly did not have the heart to start eating any of these.

But in the end I did since I was hungry and all of the seafood, from tuna to squid to prawn and salmon was all very clean tasting. Quality was definitely beyond my expectation.

Then there is also the tempura portion. Usually I never like ordering this because the vegetables & prawns always come with too much batter, plus are usually greasy like crazy. But that was not the case at Xenri's which I would rate them an 8/10 score for the tempura platter itself.

This place has fast become one of my favourite Japanese Restaurant to dine at, especially when I'm around Old Klang Road just looking to splurge. Very worth the visit.

Hakka cuisine galore.  Smile Oct 05, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

Recommended by an uncle of mine, he drove the whole family up to Kajang just to try the food here because a relative came down from Singapore. Apparently they still miss the food here so it's a must to let them try some hearty home-style food.

The very first order is they Vinegar Braised Pork Trotters. This is exactly how my grandparents would cook it - extremely sour, sweet and also spicy. Although I do not eat the meat because I do not know how to enjoy it, I can slurp up the soup with no problem at all. Not even bothered by the weather that had me sweating like a pig, literally.

Another must order is the Hakka Style Lobak. Deep fried and crispy perfection that's bursting with flavour with every bite. Although it's deep fried, it isn't dried in the slightest bit plus the stuffing is very tender.

This is the Five-layer pork belly braised with yam, a favourite of my grandpa's and something we love to order when it's available. Although I've had better, this is also pretty good because the meat are tender and so is the yam. Though I would prefer it if the yam is so tenderly cooked that it's borderline mushy.

The food here is definitely worth the drive up and also to endure the heat for.

Family favourites  Smile Oct 05, 2015

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Bak Kut Teh

Although many people say that Klang has the best Bak Kut Teh and some willingly drive all the way there to have some, I personally disagree. To me, one of the best one is from Ka Ka and my family agrees too.

Our favourite to order is the claypot Bak Kut Teh with added offals & pork ribs. The flavour of the soup is bursting with the strong herbs and it is always boiling hot as it arrives to your table.

Another thing that is amazing about this place is you can ask for a lot of soup refills at no additional charge. Which not many other restaurants offer because they often times charge you at a certain price each bowl.

Then they also serve the dry version of bak kut teh which comes with meat, lady fingers and also fried shrimp strips. While the soup version is strongly flavoured with herbs, this version is more heavily spiced which is nice in it's own way too. It's a must-try if you're in a mood for something different.

They also have braised pork belly which is..... GOOD. The sauce is flavourful & thick with flavours from boiling hours on end. Use the fried yao char kuay to dip in this is better than having it in the actual Bak Kut Teh soup.

Something else we absolutely love to other is their stewed preserved vegetable. At home we make it exceptionally sour, spicy and also sweet. Ka Ka's is just the perfect rendition of how my grandmother would cook it and they're never stingy with the veggies. Order this and enjoy a big bowl of steaming hot vegetables.

A little nostalgia. Cry Sep 24, 2015

Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops

If there's one thing I remember about Victoria Station's is how I used to wander around the 'train' and pretended like I was some atas lady in the olden days. While my family dined, I used to walk around the make-shift train dining section as my imagination went wild. Clearly I was a very funny child.

An aunt of mine's favourite place to dine with Victoria's station so she used to bring me there to eat. But that has been many years ago and it's been a long time since I last ate here so my memory of the food might be a little off. Though I remember the food tasting exceptionally good especially being one of the better places to get steaks that are not exurbently priced.

For an afternoon meal with my mom, we decided to have some steak and would rather not drive into town with the bad traffic so we chose Victoria Station. No surprise that my ideal table would be at the 'train' section but the waiter instead led us to another table despite the area where I wanted to be being entirely empty. Rather than be difficult about it we proceeded to order our meal instead.

Something that I always order is the Garlic Steak which came with a side of steam vegetables, corn and also roasted potatoes. The scent of the sauce was pretty strong so I was quite excited especially considering how my entire plate was covered in it.

Though the taste was only so so and my steak was more medium than the medium rare which I had requested it to be cooked. Also I was not happy that I only got a measly tiny five pieces of sub-par roasted potato medalions. The sides were beyond disappointing and not even the steamed corn could make up for it.

For variety sakes, my mother got the Steak with Mushroom Sauce which.... Was almost a bigger disappointment than my dish. This did not even come with a corn and that for me was just bad considering that their sides were already borderline mediocre as it is.

I don't know why, I was expecting really good food from here because of the memory I have of dining there. So when the food was way below my expectation, I was disappointed especially since we now have many other places to get equally or even better steak meals.
