Turn Back Time : A&W @ PJ OK Aug 07, 2014

Turn Back Time! The most memorable place I think most Malaysians can refer to is the iconic A&W, the first ever 24-hour, drive-in fast food outlet that opened in Malaysia @ Section 52, Petaling Jaya (opposite Amcorp Mall), since 1965, is known for its rootbeer, coney dog and dining in the car like in the movies.

Dukes & Duchess at TTDI, KL Smile Jul 19, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western variety | Bar & Pub | Burgers / Sandwiches | BBQ

Lunch on Raya Day 2 was recommended by my dear friend (a super mom) at Dukes & Duchess in TTDI, KL. A very unique "Portugis style" of Western Asian Fusion!

It's splendid entrance signage takes you in to a very cozy "bar and grill" lounge.

Although we were here for lunch on a Public Holiday/Weekend, we didn't really expect to see their "Lunch set" menu. However, we were so wronged! It was the first menu they laid down infront of us. Lovely, lunch set meals includes with Ice Lemon Tea, Ice Cream & Rice (for the Asian fusion dishes). I did requested for their usual menu to see what other offerings this place has in terms of choices. It was alot!! (2) Two page full of yummy names and brief details.

Set Lunch Menu

Their set lunch menu is pretty simple and straight to the point. Everything fits in (1) one page with pictures.

On their usual menu, there's a small section at the corner that feature's Dukes & Duchess, Chef Don Theseira, their head chef with over 35 yrs experience! 35 yrs is aplenty experience because I'm only 27 yrs this year (2015) and the head chef has been cooking for the past 35 yrs even before I was born!

Let's dive into our orders, am hungry already while typing this post!

Their nice and tasty "Ice Lemon Tea", no set meal will be complete without the good ol' Ice Lemon Tea thirst quencher. Btw, this picture I've captured looks like cold beer leh~ I wished... Lolx!

Their "Soup Of The Day" (RM12) was mushroom soup (ordered off their ala carte menu btw). I love it! I have been searching for this soup for a long time, I have tried remaking this but have failed to get the right combination of the mushroom fragrance & thickness. Their garlic bread ain't too thick and super crispy. Dip them into the soup and "mm-mmmm" sluuurrppps~!

"Grilled Pork Chop" RM15 (Lunch set), yummy thick and succulent pork chops, grilled to perfection with every bite! The BBQ sauce is really different than those usual western food BBQ sauce. Almost homemade like. However, the black pepper is really strong in the sauce.

"Nyonya Tamarind Braised Pork" RM19 (Lunch set) comes with rice & keropok. This is non-spicy but the sauce is really unique. Has that tangy tamarind taste to it. It's like sweet & sour but really fragrant too. U do not find this dish anywhere!! This is the first time tasting a meal like this and it was splendid!

"Butter Rice Pork Chop" RM15 (Lunch set) need I say more? The pork chop is thick and yummy, especially with it's sauce. The sauce is like the Tamarind braised pork sauce but has more herb aroma in it (am guessing it's basil?). The butter rice is like fried rice style where there are veggie's in it, esp. onion. Makes the rice really moist and yummy.

Last but not least, their lovely dessert (comes with the set lunches). It was delish! The whole set was delish!

There was another dish, the "Kung Pao Claypot" RM19 (Lunch) comes with rice. However, no picture because my mother-in-law ate it before I could snap a lovely photo of it. That is how awesome it is! NOt your ordinary Kung Pao Claypot Chicken! Really nyonya style. Tastes different but GOOD different~!

The total bill for (4) four pax was RM80. NO service tax and NO GST! How awesome is that!

Will I come back again?

DEFINITELY! So should u if u haven't already!

Rocku Yakiniku @ Pavilion KL Smile Jun 29, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Buffet | BBQ | Group/Family dining

Rocku Yakiniku @ Pavilion KL is the place to be! It's located at the Dining Loft on the newly extended 7th floor of Pavilion KL (on the other end near GSC). Thanks to OpenRice lovely invite to this food tasting event, I brought my baby (7mth old) and my hubby along.

The latest crave in town is this new concept restaurant that focuses on 3 important factors to note :

1. "Restaurantainment"
A Traditional style of Japanese BBQ Buffet dining meets modern entertainment.

2. Their special homemade sauces (Total 4 sauces)
a) Tare sauce is the key seasoning for Japanese BBQ meat. This special sauce will be served seasoned over the beef platters.
The other 3 sauces you can refill at the sauce station near the bar.
b) Spicy Miso sauce is seasoned over the seafood & pork meat.
c) Ponzu sauce is like soy sauce for added flavouring while dining.
d) Chili sauce for added spicyness to your BBQ while dining.

Video Link : https://vine.co/v/eJ6LFPZUBan
(P/s : All the BBQ meat will come dressed in the sauces already)

3. Smoke-free BBQ system
Each BBQ grill has a suction system installed inside surrounding the grill instead of at the top of the grill. The place was completely smoke-free even when me and my family stepped in, we were welcomed by soothing music(s) and cool air-cond.

Video Link : https://vine.co/v/eJgBv0WvpHX
Watch with your own eyes, the smoke being sucked in at the sides even when the flame was flaming hot!

Here's a tip : In order to avoid your food getting "stuck" unto the BBQ netting, start BBQ-ing the "Pork Bacon" slices FIRST! Because the layer of fatty oil from it will help coat the netting with it's oil so that when you start placing all the other raw meat/seafood on it, you won't have to worry about it getting stuck! And like all BBQ food, please have someone to watch over it and keep turning it for an even grill if not it'll turn black on one side lolx!!
Upon Entering

Upon Entering

The deco at the entrance of Rocku Yakiniku is fascinating! Traditional meets wild lolx... There's a jail-like at the entrance for you to selfie/wefie, comes with props too!
Menu

Menu

The menu is pretty simple because you only need to choose between Lunch & Dinner :Each buffet session lasts for 100mins including 20 additional dishes from their delectable buffet spread. You can even choose to extend at RM9.90 for each additional 20 minutes.

(100mins is more than enough if you're there without kids, however, in our case it took us a lil longer)

By the way, beverages & ice cream are not included in the buffet price but fret-not! They have promotions on-going for it:Or you can just order yourself a jug of 1L green tea for RM3 (No bottomless refills, fyi)
Interior deco

Interior deco

This is how to layout looks from the inside, we sat right inside at the corner. Notice that there is 1 charcoal grill installed into every table of 4 pax. The deco looks cool btw with the bottles hanging from the ceiling at the "Buffet bar" and the stage is right smack in the centre.
Up to 20 selection of choices on rotate

Up to 20 selection of choices on rotate

This is the "buffet bar" where customers can find 5 sections to this area; There are the ready-to-eat salads, raw sliced veggies that you can BBQ them, fruits from the basket, hot dishes like fried udon/spaghetti/rice, chawan mushi, fried veggie (the dishes rotates btw) & their special homemade sauces section. So while waiting for your BBQ meat to cook, you can checkout some of the hot dishes here to satisfy your hunger-pangs!

This was my buffet bar haul while awaiting for the BBQ grill to cook our meat sizzling hot hehehe... We went 2 rounds because the dishes rotated twice hehe...

Every table will come with a set of cutleries, scissors for cutting up the cooked meat into pieces (great idea for sharing!), tongs for grilling raw meat and so on. Also notice the BBQ grill installed at the table, before, starting (when the charcoal and new netting is placed in) and after grilling.

These are some of our BBQ delicacies that we enjoyed! Their meat are all flown in fresh from the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. And there's an order chit on every table where customers can write in their orders for the meat and seafood to refill.

Here's a close-up:Each type of meat/seafood comes in 3 slides/pieces per portion/plate. So if u need 6 pieces of salmon then just write 2 in the box for 2x portion/plates. There are no food wastage penalty at the moment but don't lah so greedy. Just order what you "can" eat because the BBQ grill is not huge FYI.

These are the seafood delicacies.

Their salmon cut in cubes is really fresh and their scallops is really yummy! They also have butter fish which the fish meat is really sweet, thick and juicy. On the night we were there, it was a Jazz Night featuring Bossa Princess Z Yan. My baby approve of it! He's either staring at the stage watching them perform or he is asleep lolx... At Rocku Yakiniku, being the first "Restaurantainment" in Malaysia, there are live band entertainment happening daily.

Here's the schedule for your references :

Live Band performances
Day time : Saturday & Sunday : 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Night time : Sunday - Tuesday : 7.00pm - 10.30pm
NIght time : Wednesday - Saturday : 7.30pm - 11.00pm

Jazz Night special (featuring Bossa Princess Z Yan)
Wednesday from 7pm onwards

Friday extra special : Magic Night (featuring Zlwin Chew)
Friday from 8pm onwardsThe Last Polka ice cream you can order from the counter. With 3 flavours to choose from; Coconut, Deep Dark Chocolate & Mango; Each scoop costs RM3.90. These are homemade ice-creams and are only made fresh to deliver, hence Rocku Yakiniku needs to place their orders to restock them as early as 4 days in advance! However, since this was a food tasting event for us thanks to OpenRice, we were able to enjoy a scoop each per pax so we shared with a sweet couple who was also invited for this food tasting event (we're in the same table btw hehe).
All 3 flavours are special in their own ways. We love Mango the most!

All 3 flavours are special in their own ways. We love Mango the most!

Coconut : The coconut fragrance was slightly strong in smell and taste but it's acceptable (like eating coconut sweet).

Deep Dark Chocolate : Definitely deep and dark. Very rich in chocolate I would daresay. Abit too sweet to my liking.

Mango : I personally love this, tastes like real mango, smooth and not too sweet. Just perfect.

Thanks to OpenRice for the lovely invite and also to the lovely couple who we had fun BBQ together hehe, some of our food were burnt especially when the charcoal was really burning (fire in action)~! But it was a great experience meeting new friends and also it was my baby's 2nd but 1st official food tasting event hehe.

I give this place Rocku Yakiniku, TWO big THUMBS up!Head on over if u haven't already!

Hot Star @ Setia Walk Puchong Smile Jun 13, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Taiwanese | Stall / Warung

Received a special voucher from OpenRice to go try out the Tom Yam and Black Pepper flavoured Large Fried Chicken at Hot Star outlet in Setia Walk Puchong.

This outlet is located on the 4th floor at the Grand Shanghai area where this area is like a food court on its own. Hot Star outlet is clearly visible as it's facing the side of the escalator.

There are so many banners, menus and posters all around the outlet. While waiting for my order I entertained myself to some photography of the advertisements banners and menu variety. Also a sign that says "No cutting services provided". Then I kept imagining how to eat this Large chicken...

This is the leaflet I took. There's quite a few variety to choose from here.

My drinks came first which I was a Lil disappointed because I was suppose to get the Wintermelon instead but it was sold out so I had a sour plum and a herbal juice instead. The herbal juice is actually "cincau" minus the jelly.

There's a reason why the Tom Yam and Black Pepper actually matches well with Wintermelon tea because after taking hot spicy fried food, a refreshing cooling drink is always the best thirst quencher.

Here is the Tom Yam Large Fried Chicken. The chicken is definitely Large! Bigger than my face lolx... I give this 4 stars, it can be better if the Tom Yam paste is evenly spreaded out; There were a few paste cluttered together so it gets really really sour at some parts. I took mine original btw, I wanted to taste the real chicken with Tom Yam without any other chilli powder or white pepper powder seasoning.

This is the Black Pepper Large Fried Chicken. First of all, I love it! Secondly, the sauce gets kinda sticky so it gets messy eating this but worthwhile! 5 stars! I went original with this too, to my surprise it wasn't that pepperish kinda spicy. It tastes just perfect and the sauce was a Lil sweet but it blended well. Even my hubby love it!

AND both of the Large Fried Chicken were really crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Superb!

Cielo Dolci @ Paradigm Mall Smile May 08, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Italian | Café | Ice Cream / Froyo / Gelato

Ever heard of Cielo Dolci? It's a very interesting ice cream shop that serves unique flavours apart from those you see in Baskin Robbins.

Apparently they're famous for their "Nasi Lemak" ice cream. Though I dare not try! I just cant imagine the taste even, plus wouldn't wanna risk it since I'm in my 3rd trimester. So any odd or unique flavour will be off the list for now.

My friend lurves their "Lavender Honey", so we pampered ourselves each with a cup.

It was a very unique flavour indeed. The Lavender was really fragrant and I did spotted some Lavender buds in the ice cream and the honey with milk blended perfectly with the Lavender that it was really smooth, not too sweet and not too creamy.

It was just a perfect blend. Nice enough to savour on a hot day.

Supplementary Information:
Unique flavours melt in ur mouth! Must try especially the Lavender Honey or for a wild taste go for Nasi Lemak
