A Gem in Imbi Food Haven! Smile Oct 31, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Bak Kut Teh

This Bak Kut Teh restaurant is different. Besides the traditional bak kut teh, it has several other authentic Chinese dishes on the menu. The Tham family started their food business way back in early eighties. Like many Chinese businesses, it was a humble beginning. They were just doing their business manning a roadside stall along Old Klang Road then. Today, they have four restaurants in and around Kuala Lumpur. Besides Imbi, they have branches in Old Klang Road, Puchong and Jalan Kuching.

The restaurant is humbly located on the ground floor of the 4-storey building with flats above. It is at the end of Jalan Barat off Jalan Imbi.
The Interior of the Restaurant

The Interior of the Restaurant

The restaurant interior is bright and clean with pictures of celebrities including 'Laughing Ko' on the walls. The toilets are very clean too.

Mr Tham, the Friendly Boss!

Mr Tham, the owner and boss of the restaurant is most friendly and would let you in on some of the secrets in their food preparations!
YuYi special Long Bean Rice

YuYi special Long Bean Rice

The Long Bean Rice is the best I have eaten so far. Mum had been feeding us with this when we were little but not so good like this one. Its taste is really great. The texture of the rice is firm but not hard and it is flavourful. This is Mr Tham's special. He said the reason it tasted so special is because the rice has been prefried with the other ingredients like dried shrimps, long beans and onions before it is cooked!
YuYi special Bak Kut Teh in Claypot

YuYi special Bak Kut Teh in Claypot

The Bak Kut Teh in claypot is great. The soup tasted slightly sweet and has a nice strong herbal fragrance. The meat texture is just nice and succulent.
Steam Fish Head with Minced Ginger

Steam Fish Head with Minced Ginger

The Steam Fish Head is very fresh with no earthy smell normally with a fresh water fish. The fish meat is both sweet and succulent.
Drunken Chicken in Huangjiu

Drunken Chicken in Huangjiu

The Drunken Chicken in Huang Jiu is excellent. It can make you drunk too! Chicken is cooked with 100% Huangjiu with no water added! The wine is imbued into the chicken meat which is succulent and flavourful. I strongly recommend this dish.
Pork Stomach in Peppery Soup

Pork Stomach in Peppery Soup

The Pork Stomach in Peppery Soup is good too. The pork stomach is clean and there is no smell. It is just nice to the bite and not rubbery at all. It is certainly well done.

Generally, the prices of the dishes here are reasonable. Bak Kut Teh in claypot is RM25 per person and is RM13 per bowl only. The Steamed Fish in a variety of sauces is RM25 for small and RM30 for large. There are homemade jeoung jing, ginger, soy, assam or just simply fried crispy styles. The Drunken Kampong Chicken in wine is RM28 or drumstick style s RM20. Kidney in wine is RM20. Liver in wine is RM16. Stomach in peppery soup is RM20. Pork leg in thick soy sauce is RM16. Yong Tau Hakka style is RM1.60 per piece. The filling fish paste is very good like Ampang Yong Tau Fu! So now you don't have to go all the way to Ampang village! There is a variety of greens done different styles too. They are priced small RM10, medium RM14 and large RM18. Long Bean Rice per bowl is RM2.50 large which is worth it! Plain rice is RM1.50 large.
There is a variety of drinks from sky juice to beers! Beers are at RM8.

The cooking style is basically homestyle with no trace of ajinomoto. I didn't have to drink a lot of water later in the night which happened with some other restaurants. Thus it is one place you can go everyday. Bring your dad and mum there, they will be delighted with the Long Bean Rice and Kampong Chicken in wine!

This is my first eating adventure with OpenRice and first time eating the Soft Shell Crab. I must confess that I had a Love and Hate relationship with Crabs! Why? I love to eat crabs as the meat has a special texture, taste and aroma. But I always come away with injured tongue, cheeks and once a broken tooth! When told you can actually eat the whole soft shell crab, I was on top on the moon.

The restaurant is indeed a specialist. They rare their own crabs in 'condos', actually in stack of metal boxes like letter boxes you find in condos. They are fed a piece of fish daily and water changed daily too! So the crabs are rared in very hygienic condition and thus devoid of toxins which are found in normal crabs in the wild which scavenge on decaying organic matter.

Cut pieces of the crabs are dipped in batter and powdered with special secret flour mixtures and then deep fried to golden brown. The finished products tasted heavenly snappy with the meat juicy and aromatic.
I think I am beginning to just love crab!

Price : RM8 per 100 gram/ About RM20 per crab

Rocku Yakiniku was indeed a great BBQ experience with a surprise! The environment is not only smokeless, it is odourless. You really can bring your mum and granny there. Promise them that they need not wash their hair after the meal! Haha! They may never believe you but it is true!

Rocku is a buffet restaurant and entry is between RM40 to 50++ on weekdays and weekends respectively. It is really good value. There are sumptuous and variety of seafoods, meats and vegetables. Plus live shows every afternoons and nights. Every Wednesday is Jazz and Friday is Magic Show by Zlwin!

The seafood, meats and vegetables are really fresh. The beef is airflown daily from Australia. Although it is buffet, the seafood and meats are served on order and freshly cut. You may order as much as you like. So you won't see bloody drippings all over!

There are a variety of inhouse homemade sauces. I like the miso sauce best. Goes very nice for BBQ.

Besides the above seafood and meats for BBQ, there delicious fried Japanese fried rice and noodles. There also ready fired fish and chicken too. The seaweeds are well seasoned with sweet sauces. There are chawan mushi too and they are delicious.

The charcoall grills are specially designed such that all smoke and oil from grilling are sucked into a duct immediately and out through tall filters and then expelled outside.

There is a disappointment for the sweet tooth, there being no free deserts. The Last Polka ice cream is the only desert and it is RM3.90 per scoop extra. But they are yummy. I tried the coconut flavour and it is worth the price. It is aromatic and creamy! I need to go back for the mango and deep dark chocolate!

It is indeed a very satifying dining experience! A great place to celebrate any event like birthdays and also just to impress your date!

German Pork Knuckle

German Pork Knuckle

German Pork Knuckle - Crispy skin and juicy meat. The meat is well seasoned with aromatic spices. Big serving good for 2. Served with vegetables and fries. A variation of crispy pork knuckle is found at Hakka restaurant behind Pavillion Shopping Center at Bukit Bintang. While you are there you should try the Beehoon Fried with Crab.
German Sausage Platter

German Sausage Platter

German Sausage Platter - 3 types of yummy sausages. I like the smokey peppery and cheesy ones. The sausages are served with BBQ sauce, fries, baked potatoes and vegetables. Very big serving. Definately for 2 or 3 persons.
BBQ Back Baby Ribs

BBQ Ribs - They are are well seasoned and grilled Texan or Mexican style. I find both very delicious and the meat very succulent.
Grilled Pork Belly

Meaty Products for Sale!

Meaty Products for Sale!

Meaty products for sale - !0% discount for diners! You like what you eat? Buy the meat home to cook.

The servings are generally large. They will satisfy most big eaters especially if you also try the muffin and ice cream. You may then not have room for salads and soup.

The meats are all very fresh direct from the factory owned by the restaurant owner. Vegetables are fresh too. You should try the soups which I find very creamy and tasty.

Besides they always have promotions like Mother's day special for 2 at RM49.90 only. I think you can still celebrate a belated Mother's day. Your mum would like the pork belly!

So look out for Father's Special next month.

There is an on-going challenge ending this month too! The Goliath Challenge! Eat for free if you can polish off a 6" pork burger, fries and soft drink in 30 minutes. Added reward is a discount voucher for RM30. If you fail then you pay for the food which is RM39.90 only! So it is a win-win situation.

For more information regarding the Challenge, visit www.facebook.com/jurohaven. Like it so you can be in touch with their coming promotions. They are selling smoked cooked X'mas ham at RM45 per kg.

By the way, you know why the name Juro? Say it in Mandarin? You got it. I would have prefered Porky Restaurant ! Haha!

The Meaty (that is the brand!) products are also found in any large hypermarket eg Tesco.

Do drop by the restaurant. I am sure you will find it very satisfying. A Made-in-Malaysia Geman Restaurant! Auf Wiedersehen!

An Amazing Nyonya Experience! Smile May 15, 2013

An intro' to Nyonya Cookings!

An intro' to Nyonya Cookings!

The basic ingredients of Nyonya cookings. Look at the mortar! Most with a granite rooling pin or pounder (a bowl and a pedestal). It is indeed a nostalgic sight.
Windows on the ceilings!

Windows on the ceilings!

Windows on the ceiling! Many parts of a Nyonya house is found here. Here the window panels artfully hang on the ceiling. Very homely like The Food Republics on the top floor of Vivo City, Singapore.
Pai Tee - The cups and the condiments

Pai Tee - The cups and the condiments

Pai Tee - The cups and condiments of chopped fried eggs, cucumbers and parsley, Seang Kuang (turnip), Chili and chili sauce.
A work of art - A finished Pai Tee

A work of art - A finished Pai Tee

A finished product - Pai Tee DIY! The taste is as lovely as it looks. The the 'fine dining' of fried popiah!
Fried Tenggiri Steak garnish with fiery chili

Fried Tenggiri Steak garnish with fiery chili

Fried Tenggiri steak with chili. The chili is sweetish with lots of chopped big oinions and garlic. The fish is fresh favourful.
Ayam Pongteh

Ayam Pongteh

This Ayam Pongteh is quite unigue. It is indeed the Nyonya version of the common soya sauce chicken with potatoes. The taste is sweet and mildly spicy from keluak. The chicken and potatoes are soft but not soggy.
Keluah Bendi/Lady Fingers

Keluah Bendi/Lady Fingers

Normally we have Bendi with sambal belachan. It is interesting to have keluah as garnishing. Keluah if you have never tasted before is very mildly like black bean paste and mildly spicy too.
Cincaluk Platter

Cincaluk Platter

The Cincaluk Platter of fried chicken, prawn and sotong is my favourite. This is a variation of the items marinated with Nam Yee (fermented bean curd) or Guiness Stout. The items are crispy with hint of cincaluk and of course salty. Excellent to go with some cold beers!

Included in the menu is Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leave with keluah sambal. The keluah give this dish a unique taste as we are more familiar with the leave fried with sambal belacan.

Generally, it was a very unique and interesting dining experience as keluah is used in most of the dishes. Keluah ingredient is the specialty of Malaccan nyonya.
The restaurant is tastefully decorated with pieces from a normal Nyonya house. It is lovely and homely. The owner and host Ms Stephanie with a friendly and warm hospitality makes your dining a perfect evening.
Even the name of the restaurant has its unique origin but I am not going to tell you here. Haha! Please visit www.thetranquerah.com for the answer and more information.

Based on the above menu for 5 persons together with steamed rice and drinks, per head expenditure is about RM40.00.

Happy Dining at The Tranquerah!
