Moontree House OK Sep 17, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

Moontree House, which serves a respectable range of food & coffee.

Moontree House has sometimes been described as a "feminist's book cafe," reflecting the sensibilities of its owner, who's a writer & poet.

Not interested in browsing through mainly Chinese-language publications on gender studies? Homemade "zakka" goods _ puppets, bags & assorted accessories _ created by Malaysian female artists are also available for purchase here.

Intriguing snacks here include otak-otak with handmade mantau steamed buns (RM14).

Makiya OK Sep 17, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops | Seafood

Snacking on sushi at a Setiawalk restaurant that offers fairly interesting options.

Makiya Sushi, which serves sushi topped with both unagi & omelet (RM3.50+) .

. or simply with roe-loaded shishamo (RM3.20+ per piece).

(Imitation) crab leg wrapped with salmon sashimi (RM12+)? Count us in.

Avocado sushi (RM1.50+), lovely-looking but could be riper for success.

Soft-shell crab inari sushi (RM3+). Works well, most of these combinations.

Possibly the cheapest sea urchin sushi in town, only RM6+ per uni-loaded piece (!). Unfortunately though, in this case, customers receive what they pay for. Slightly too stinky.

All in all, acceptable for a budget-conscious outing; we hope Makiya's strategy succeeds.

Kulcats OK Sep 17, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches | Sweets/Snack

the cool kids are slinking over to Kulcats Barrio, a color-soaked venue with artistic flourishes aplenty. It's no less than the embodiment of 'hipster hangout.'

The menu's a hearty hodgepodge of Western faves, from a beefy-good "Sloppycats Burger" with moreish "Meow Fries" (RM18) to steaks, short-ribs & nachos.

Kulcats makes its own desserts; the chocolate pavlova's nice enough to make us believe the banoffee pies & carrot cakes here might also prove purr-worthy.

Lap up a hazelnut latte (or maybe the intriguing-sounding Kulcats Volcano Milo Smoothie).

Sanook OK Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Thai | Restaurant

This recently opened eatery in Taman Desa could be the closest thing to an inner-city Bangkok hole-in-the-wall that folks might find in this KL suburb.

Frills-free porky fare supplies the fanfare: Start with a salad of 'laab moo' (RM8), the northeastern Isan minced pork recipe that sets off spicy-sour-savory fireworks.

'Nem' house-made pork sausages (RM9) with ginger & chili sauce. Serving sizes are small, helping Sanook charge seemingly low prices.

Love crispy pork belly? Order the 'moo krob' (RM12) maybe, rustically deep-fried ...

... or mixed with 'kapi' shrimp paste (RM14). Beware: The menu here's a showcase of sin, irredeemably soaked in sodium & oil, which could turn off customers looking for lighter nuances.

Green curry with pork (RM8). The remainder of Sanook's selection comprises soul-food staples like som tam, pad thai, tom yum & kai jiao omelets; this isn't the type of outlet where the cooks strive to shock & awe or show off madly inventive skills.

Sayong Kitchen OK Sep 05, 2013
Categories : Malay | Restaurant | Noodles

Here's a solid selection of Malay fare at the recently opened Sayong Kitchen, perfectly positioned for Damansara Heights' office crowd.

Nangka Gulai Lemak Kuning (RM3), a recipe that gives traditional cooking a good name.

Ikan Masin Tumis Darat (RM3), the kind of savory-gravy food to partner with plenty of rice.

Daging Masak Hitam (RM4), not triumphantly tender but not terribly tough either.

Ayam Gajus (RM4), simple but reasonably satisfactory. Can't say much more than that.
