Quar/Tet Smile Mar 16, 2014

The ideal hipster hangout for this neighborhood, buzzing with positive vibes.

The menu plays it safe with crowd-pleasing favorites; expect eggs pleasantly poached with either spinach (our choice, RM15 nett), smoked salmon or turkey ham, drenched in hollandaise sauce.

Honest, hearty fare; the bagel stuffed with salmon & cream cheese, paired with a crisp salad (RM16), works well for brunch. Quartet's soft-opening menu remains limited, with a kitchen that closes by 6pm, but eventually, a fuller selection will be available for dinner.

Our Quartet favorite: The French Toast (RM12), fulfilling in its flavorful fluffiness, served in a mighty portion with syrup & berry compote. Order this one.

Chicken-&-spinach quiche. Nitpickers might resort to the abominable cliche that this isn't something to "shout about," but satiated stomachs are more desirable than hoarse throats.

Cakes & muffins look OK. The usual suspects of chocolate, carrot, red velvet & walnut.

Quartet currently obtains its coffee blends from Artisan Roast (one of its founders formerly worked at that increasingly venerable institution; others have links to Subang SS15's Grafa cafe).

La Vanilla ice-blended & Old-fashioned hot chocolate; both serve a purpose on a rainy weekend.

Coffee mocktail, intriguingly named 'Jerusalem': Espresso, soda, syrup & ice. This is a cafe where coffee fans congregate; one of VCR Cafe's owners might be spotted chilling out here.

C.E.O Burger Smile Mar 15, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

The wait is over: Hipster burgers have finally come to Kepong.

The burgers here score an A for effort but a B for execution. Looks-wise, this 'Hungry Man' (RM19.50 nett with fries) is a faultless construction of a beef patty topped with chicken breast, streaky bacon, cheese & smoked hickory BBQ sauce; in terms of flavor, the patty doesn't quite deliver the explosively savory juices that some customers will demand.

The inventive streak is clearest in the 'B.A.D. Breakfast All Day' Burger (RM18.50), substituting the patty with a spiraled chicken sausage, partnered with fried egg, bacon & hash brown. But while this seems like a laudably terrific recipe, it needs tweaking too; the flavors fail to come alive _ the sausage is fat & moist but bland, while the bacon's dry & chewy.

Still, we're optimistic C.E.O, which only opened this month, will get better as the weeks go by. One thing's for certain: The outlet cares about satisfying customers with its generous servings. The Santa Fe (RM18.90) features not only a genuinely hearty beef patty but plenty of guacamo
le, cilantro-tomato salsa, orange cheddar cheese & sour cream.

And we like C.E.O's vegetarian burger (RM13.90) too, a thoughtfully considered concoction of mushroom ragout, hash brown, Swiss cheese, parmesan crisp & basil pesto mayo. This one works well, signaling that what needs fine-tuning would be the meat patties.

C.E.O's fries are fine; fluffy & fresh, paired with a spicy-tangy 'Magic Sauce.'

The final secret weapon in C.E.O's arsenal: Tater-tot-style fried potatoes (RM12.90), showered with guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos & nachos cheese sauce, a carb addict's fantasy come true in the calorie-laden flesh.

Porcelene Smile Mar 15, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Bar & Pub | Pizza/Pasta

One of 2013's most notable newbies, Porcélene is a fun, funky hangout billed as Malaysia's first acid jazz restaurant & bar, determined to deliver a distinctive dining experience that lives up to its tagline of 'coup de foudre,' the struck-by-lightning sense of love at first sight.

Porcélene's mushroom soup (RM15) is a good one, a light, lovely cream of five types of fungi, drizzled with truffle oil & almonds.

Asian Diver (RM28), another tapas-style treat of sauteed scallops with rock salt & asparagus.

Pasta has a place of pride at Porcelene: Highlights include angel hair, aglio olio style (RM25), well-prepared with prawns & salmon roe.

Plus, there's a passion for pizzas with Asian flourishes: mildly spicy Thai-inspired Ga Prao Gai (RM25) with Pattaya-style minced chicken & fried sweet basil.

The menu strives for playfully creative touches, epitomized by The French Bird (RM38 before taxes), 60 fabulous grams of pan-seared duck liver on hash browns with caramelized onions.

The wine list is thoughtful, supplying something for everyone.

Knock Knock Smile Mar 15, 2014

Folks who knock on the entrance of Bangsar South's Pantai Panorama apartments might be pleased to find friendly Okinawan native Megumi Matsuda within, welcoming guests to her new business with homemade cakes & fresh coffee.

Carrot cupcakes baked in the morning, available for the eating before noon. The cafe's operating hours are strange (see below), but that's when Megumi, who lives in Pantai Panorama, believes this condo's residents are most susceptible to the call of coffee.

Whether it's a nice, hot latte that you're lusting after ...

... or an even hotter chocolate that you crave, Knock Knock won't leave you hanging.

Gonna make you sweat though: Pantai Panorama is plagued by slopes; visitors must park in Block 5, a nearly 10-minute walk downhill-uphill from the cafe in Block 2.

Slurp Cafe Smile Mar 12, 2014

A cafe that's bound to be polarizing; we kinda like it, but we're not sure we should.

Let's start with the positives: Slurp's spotlight-on-superheroes trappings are engaging .

Still, the comic-book theme seems an odd match for the menu, which tries to take flight with East-West fusion experiments like pasta a la nasi lemak (RM21+): spaghetti stir-fried in sambal, surrounded by anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg, cockles, cucumber, curry prawns & papadum.

Slurp also tackles the mamak mutation of Murtabak Maggi & makes a burger of it (RM17+), lodging not merely an egg between two chunky-crunchy slabs of instant noodles but mayo & Worcestershire & sesame sauces too.

Desserts seem designed to delight. We're pretty sure these are the handiwork of Cake Tella; Eddie Tan's signature concoctions of peanut butter mille-crepe & Baileys chocolate mousse cake with caramelized hazelnuts take center stage in the chiller.

Drinks aren't spared from culinary villainy. Durian fuels the twist to Slurp's caffe latte; thankfully, the taste of the fruit is clear & clean, overt without being overbearing.
