Minute steak set lunch Smile Jun 04, 2012

Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops | BBQ | Private Party

Meatworks' set lunch is a real good deal. At RM10 for a main and a simple dessert (usually just a small serving of cut fruit), I expected the main to be quite mediocre. Contrary to expectations, their set lunch is actually pretty decent.

Their minute steak tasted properly cooked, and the quality of the meat may not have been prime but at least decent enough to be delicious and tender. I had minimal difficulty with the cutting, which is more than I can say for most places offering a budget-option for steak.

Even the potato wedges were properly moist and flavoured with herbs and spices, instead of the expectation of dry and thoughtless potatoes. Value for money is outstanding and quality is very much praise-worthy, especially when the price is considered.

Spending per head: Approximately RM10

Bak chang but not really bak Smile Jun 03, 2012

Categories : Malaysian variety | Restaurant | Noodles | Nasi Lemak | Group/Family dining

Glutinous rice dumpings (bak chang) are not something I see very often on menus at cafes or restaurants; and are typically only found in stalls, which means I have to take them home and get my hands oily to eat them. I'm too lazy for all that, unless I have some sort of assurance that it's good and worth the effort.

The best ones are always home-made by friends and are usually not for sale. Heritage Village serves what I would consider good enough to pass as "home-made quality", though not quite there. Being pork-free, they only use (lean) chicken meat, but that's fine, since it's loaded with black-eyed beans and mushroom.

The best part is the sambal that they serve it with (the same one as they serve with their nasi lemak). I'd usually wallop 3-4 servings of sambal unabashedly. Thoroughly satisfying!

Favouring curry Smile May 09, 2012   (Related Review)

I'm usually not a fan of curry noodles - because the curry is usually greasier than it is flavourful, and has little else to offer; but once I tried the curry mee here, I was converted.

I would say this has to be THE BEST curry noodles anywhere (there are different types of curry noodles, so I'm referring to this particular type).

The curry is hot and full of spice flavours, and also moderately spicy. Fried wantons (3 per serving) are crispy, even after sitting in the curry for a while (they soak it up very well, adding to the flavour) - the juicy pork filling is generous. The char siew is chunky and roasty (as opposed to silky and sweet), and it is served with cockles (optional), bean sprouts, long beans, and mint leaves (some would consider this a garnish but it's one of the major ingredients for me - balances out the curry taste). The noodles itself are curly and springy - gives it a bit of a chew (which I think works for this curry mee).

Portions are generous and would satisfy very well especially on a stormy morning. If I'm not mistaken, they don't open past lunch.

Spending per head: Approximately RM4.50(早餐)

Mango madness Smile May 04, 2012   (Related Review)

There's something about mango-based desserts that just really appeals to me. I just can't get enough of it. Upon spotting the mango sago with pomelo on the menu at Tong Pak Fu, I couldn't resist. Funny thing is, I stepped in because of a promotion, but I decided that I wouldn't like the flavour of the day that much, and opted for the mango dessert instead.

The mango richness was so intense and creamy, and the sweetness is just right. The abundant bits of pomelo gave an added dimension of sweetness and texture. Perhaps one of the best mango desserts I've ever had.

"Drug" smuggling Smile May 02, 2012

Living in Bandar Utama, I tend to watch my movies at Tropicana City Mall, even though 1 Utama is closer by. Why? First and foremost, 1 Utama tends to be overloaded with people; and secondly (and probably most importantly), they would be less suspicious of me sneaking in a packet of Garrett's Chicago Mix.

Garrett's beats cinema concessions any day of the week. Every single large popped kernel is fully coated, with always none unpopped! My pick is a mixture of cheese (which tastes much like Cheesels) and caramel. The sweetness of the caramel is so rich and strong; it's almost too much for me if it isn't balanced with the saltiness of (artificial) cheese. The cheese popcorn itself isn't great - it's kinda flat and unexciting, but when eaten with the caramel popcorn, it's the perfect combination.

It's unfortunate that they don't sell smaller packets - we could hardly finish a packet between two of us!
