Value for money fried oyster Smile Sep 04, 2012

A trip to Penang would not be complete without a dish of fried oyster! The nearest food court from where my hotel is at Super Tanker.

They serve fried oyster, fried prawn and the combination of both. Prices ranges from RM5 to RM10.
Fried Oyster

Fried Oyster

I first ordered the RM5 fried oyster. When it arrived, I was shocked by the massive amount of oysters they put in. Generous amount of fat, juicy oysters! The oysters were fried in typical Penang style of eggs + starch with spring onions. The dish turns out to be quite good, although I would prefer it to be slightly more cooked. The ratio of egg and starch was OK, but since it was a little too undercooked for my liking, the starch was a little too wet. The oysters were cooked perfectly as they were juicy and full of oyster aroma!
Spot the prawn!

Spot the prawn!

After finishing this dish, I proceeded to order another, as I was still hungry. This time I ordered the fried oyster and prawn. It was a little strange to see prawns cooked in the same dish as the oysters. When it arrived, I thought they've gotten my order wrong as I could not see any prawns. Upon further digging, only then I realise the prawns were all underneath the oyster. The dish was almost the same as the fried oysters itself. However, the prawns were quite big, and also cooked to perfection. It was springy and juicy! The best thing is, there is no need to peel the prawn shells!

I will definitely order this the next time I come by Super Tanker. Great value for money fried oysters!

Unique and Delicious Apom! Smile Sep 03, 2012

A trip to Super Tanker would never be complete without eating Aki Pancake!

This stall is renowned for its taste and variety of its apom. Ranging from the salty based ones such as tuna, pork floss & sausage, to the sweet based ones like peanut butter, brown sugar, banana, one of my personal mission is to try all of them!

As you can see in the picture above, the uncle chef is busy preparing the apoms efficiently, so I did not have to wait for long, even though there are many customers.

I ordered the peanut butter + cheese, as I am very up for experiment, but looking for something sweet for dessert.
After around 5-10 minutes of waiting, the pancake is finally ready!
Peanut Butter Cheese

Peanut Butter Cheese

At first bite, it was crunchy on the crust, but soft on the inside. It is cooked to perfection, as it is not too soggy not is it burnt.
The pancake base is sweeter than I thought, but coupled with the peanut butter and cheese, it is tastes delicious. The peanut butter is not actually just peanut butter jam, but it is sprinkled with crushed peanuts. The cheese's smell does not overpower the peanut butter. It is not the typical salty type of cheese, but the sweetness blends into the cheese.

Eating is fresh is the way to go, as the cheese is still melted. For RM2.80, it is a cheap, affordable and delicious snack!

I will come again to try another flavour next time!

Prawn Mee @ Bee Hooi Smile Sep 03, 2012

Just a few stones throw away from the hotel, there is this reputable coffeeshop, which is full of famous Penang food.

I arrived there at around 6pm, as I've had an early lunch and was hungry. So I ordered what was opened at that time, which is the prawn mee.
Prawn noodle

Prawn noodle

It turned out to be quite good, as this is the type of prawn mee which is not easily available in KL. The noodle was cooked to a slight firmness, just perfect for me. The soup was full of prawn taste, and is very aromatic. It came with slices of pork, 1/4 of an egg, a couple of mini prawns (fresh prawns nonetheless) and some kangkung vegetables. It was not very oily, so I did not feel 'jelak' at all after eating this bowl. It was not very spicy which suits me as well. After finishing this bowl of noodles, I was not extra thirsty which is a good sign that minimal or no MSG was used.

My only gripe is that it is a little too small for me, but this is the expected normal Penang portion. For RM3.00, I suppose it is justified.

THE Penang Char Kuay Teow Smile Sep 03, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

Went to Penang recently with friends for some glutton fest, and to just enjoy. So one of the must-go places is the infamous Lorong Selamat's char kuay teow!

We arrived there at approximately on a Sunday afternoon 1.30pm. Luckily it was still opened at that time. So we ordered 1 plate each.
Unmissable

Unmissable

As you can see from the picture, the prices range from RM7.50, RM8.00 and RM9.50. In order to make an order, we had to secure a table first, and inform them how many plates you want at whichever table number secured.

I was initially curious on how come there are 2 different cooks, and was worried if mine were cooked by the famous auntie herself. Turns out that the other cook only cooks the prawn, but the final frying is done by one person only.

Our orders came 2 by 2 (we ordered 6), the last one arriving around 20 minutes later. I have already expected to wait, given the notorious reputation of the auntie.

Surprisingly, we weren't ill treated or shouted at, nor did we hear anybody getting some bad service from the auntie.
Char Kuey Teow

Char Kuey Teow

When my char kuey teow arrived, I knew immediately that this will not disappoint, and I was right. I could smell the aroma from the dish, and from the very first bite, I could taste the 'wok hei' of the char kuay teow. It was cooked with such strong heat, but it wasn't anywhere near burnt. The cockles were juicy, plump and bursts inside your mouth unlike many which I have tried before. The beansprouts were fat and juicy and accompanied with spring onions.
Finally, the star of the dish were the 3 big prawns. Juicy and full of prawn taste and smell, it is the perfect compliment to the kuay teow.

This is without a doubt is the best char kuay teow I have ever tasted. I have tried many, especially in KL, but this stall is still the undisputed in my books.
It may be above priced, but this is what paying for quality means.

Jawa Mee

Jawa Mee

This Jawa Mee is suprisingly good, as it has everything which I expect, and more! The ingredients includes sliced cucumber, sliced sengkuang, bean sprout, fried tofu and the yellow noodle itself of course.

The fried tofu is very fresh as it is very crunchy. Mixed with the awesome jawa mee sauce, the fried tofu becomes very delicious indeed. The gravy is very flavourful, aromatic and a little spicy to complete the taste. The yellow noodles have some lye water smell, but its easily overpowered by the aromatic gravy.

Despite the brisk business of this shop, the service was very good as this dish came very fast and freshly cooked as well. Surely it was not prepared beforehand.

I will definitely order this the next time I come by Super Tanker.
