Kafe Kheng Pin OK Jul 12, 2012

Other than char kuey teow, cendol, ice kacang, koay chiap, loh bak is another must have in Penang. Kafe Kheng Pin in George Town serves one of the best loh bak in Penang, and the place is very crowded during lunch hour. Every table is full and sharing tables is common in the shop. Every customer is seen to have loh bak together with their mains.

A plate of mix lor bak for 2 persons cost RM7. I feel that it is quite reasonable, cheaper than the one I had in Taiping. The plate consists of a big piece of fried bean curd, spring roll, prawn fritters, deep fried pork roll. Lor bak here is nice, fresh and not oily at all. I especially heart the prawn fritter and spring roll. The prawn fritter is very crunchy but not doughy, with just enough batter to coat the generous amount of prawns.

Kek Seng OK Jul 12, 2012

Categories : Kopitiam | Ice Cream / Froyo / Gelato

People said it is a must to try out ice kacang and home made durian ice cream at Kek Seng Coffee Shop when travel to Penang. Yea we did, but the ice kacang taste bad. The shop is not doubt getting famous especially among tourists but they make me feel like they are more into making money than to provide good refreshing ice kacang and durian ice cream.

Ice Kacang

The bowl of ice kacang was topped with jelly, red beans, sweet corns, durian ice cream and sugar drizzle.
The "ice" kacang came half melted. Half of the ice was melted by the time it reached our table. The ice was so coarse and tasted so awful, with the smell of tap water. The durian ice cream was also half melted, not nice, and lack of durian taste.

Next to Gurney Plaza Penang is the Gurney Drive Hawker Center which is very famous among tourists. Food prices at the hawker centre is rather expensive but it is still busy with diners at night. At the stall 61 in the hawker centre, very nice pasembur is available. There is a wide variety of base ingredients to choose from such as prawn fritters, fried bean curd, fish balls, fish cake, fried octopus, fried crab, etc. etc.

Pasembur
The end product of the pasembur consisting of prawn fritter, bean curd, fish cake and shredded cucumber drenched in some orange-ish sauce looked a little unpleasant but tasted very nice. The thick orange-ish sauce had a combination of sweet, spicy and nutty taste, indeed its taste combines the shadow of chilli sauce and tomato sauce.

Hai Oan OK Jul 12, 2012

Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

Hai Oan, a very old shop located in the town of Penang, has been serving customers with their delicious Hainanese cuisines such as pork chop, pork buns and coffee. The interior is very simple, with ceramic tiles on walls, wooden chairs and marble tables, and old fashion fans swirling on the ceiling.

The Hainanese Pork Chop came with ample of gravy, accompanying by cubed potatoes, tomato, and onions. This dish didn’t win my heart in the serving portion, as the meat was not make-you-eat-until-full portion, but just enough for tea-time snack. However, the meat which was so tender and burst with juiciness, taste perfectly when dipped with the thick brown gravy sauce definitely make me want to order another plate.
