Ghee Hiang OK Jul 14, 2012

Categories : Chinese | Bakery / Cake / Kuih

Many say that Him Heang Tambun Biscuits is the best, but Ghee Hiang is not bad too. Also, comparing to the bad attitude of those staffs in Him Heang, the service in Ghee Hiang is much more better. The building is resides along Burmah Road, and it is not big, but looks new with modern design. Inside the building, there is a big counter with a number of staffs serving you. Their packaging of each product is very nice, and the varieties of biscuits available are wide too. They have tau sah peah, lou poh peng, hneoh pneah, beh teh soh, almond cookies, sesame oils and many other choices.

Ghee Hiang's Tambun Biscuits comes in individual package, and each package has four biscuits. I like this concept, as the nicely sealed package can retain the freshness of the biscuits. I don't have to worry that the biscuits will turn bad or crawling in ants when putting them on the table for few days.

Once open the package, a nice aroma of green beans can be smelt. A bite into the biscuit, you can feel the flaky sensation from the outer layer, and the fine and salty green beans (Tau Sah) fillings pairing nicely with the crust.

Kedai Kopi Soon Yuen OK Jul 12, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

Kedai Kopi Soon Yuen is located along the Chowrasta Market, or commonly known by Kelinga Bansan by Penangites. It is a very busy shop selling koay teow th'ng, Hokkien Mee, Wan tan Mee and a few other common breakfast choices. Many people tends to drop by Soon Yuen for the famous kaoy teow th'ng after shopping in the market.

Koay Teow Th'ng

The koay teow th'ng has a flavorful soup base, with sizeable amount of koay teow, pieces of meat and fish balls sitting in the soup. I like the bouncy fish balls which is freshly made by the stall owner.

Kimberly Street Koay Chap OK Jul 12, 2012

Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung | Noodles

Kimberly Street is one of the famous street in Penang, with varieties of street food available along the street at night time. Koay Chiap, char koay teow, tong shui and koay teow theng is said to be the Famous Four in Kimberly Street, and of course we will not loose the chance of having them when we went to Penang. Since we were already quite stuffed when we were there at night, we ordered only kaoy chiap.

Koay Chiap

The koay chiap came in a large bowl, with rectangular cut rice noodles (koay chiap), shredded duck meat, coagulated pig blood, offals, braised pork slices, and halved braised egg. The soup base was delicate, enriched with herbs and spices that were not overpowered. Sipping down the piping hot soup was a full comfort, even though the place was slightly hot.

There is a stall in Kedai Kopi Hai Beng selling very nice lor mee. The stall started their business since 1957 and is very famous among the neighbourhood. Other than lor mee, the coffee shop also has stalls selling mixed rice and western breakfast sets. The shop is rather quiet when we are there, probably because it is already 10am and most of the people already done with their breakfast.

lor mee
The lor mee is small in portion, but taste nice in every spoonful. The gravy is thick and flavourful, coating every strands of the mee hun. I especially like the meat slices, for it is tender and moist, not just tasteless and tough like those I have tasted back in Klang Valley.

Laksa OK Jul 12, 2012

Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung | Noodles

Balik Pulau and Air Itam is said to be the best place for laksa in Penang. The taste of laksa for both places is different, and which one you like is depends on your palate. The one in Balik Pulau tastes lighter, while the one in Air Itam tastes heavier. My girl brought me to have the laksa at Air Itam when I visited her in Penang few months ago. The stall was shabby and hot, with a few stools and tables all fully occupied by customers. Indeed many were still waiting to get an empty seat, so do us.

Laksa
The laksa was alright with some disappointment. It tasted rather light and lack of flavourfulness, but there was ample fish meat in the soup. My girl said the laksa was not that light when she tasted it two weeks ago. She said the laksa that time was quite thick and flavourful, but the one I had was very diluted, probably it was almost 4pm and the owner had been adding some hot water instead of real laksa stock to the previous laksa soup.
