Sumo Origini had also open its another outlet in Kuchai Lama. I had made my ways to try the Golden Triangle which is one of my favorites too. Something different which is simply special compared to the normal origini. Wraped with egg and it is then stuffed and being deep fried, the onigiri give the oozing delicious cheese texture inside while it is hot and pipping taste in it. It is not only crunchy in the outside but I love the combination of fusion so much. Not only that, they have a lot more to choose in their menu include the Idoko Karage, Shisamo Mentaiko and many more. continue reading

It has been a while since my last food review. Waking up on mother's day today gave me the motivation to review what Janice and I had yesterday over at Sumo Onigiri Rice Ball Damansara Utama. I've heard of these Japanese rice balls before, but have not had the change to try it until now. We were served first with some Miso Soup and Chawan Mushi to tantalize our taste buds before the barrage of rice balls to come. Served in this cute small bowl, Janice and I did like their Chawan Mushi as it was tasty without the heavy fishy smell found at some other spots. I wanted more though, but then the rice invasion came. Here's a short fact about how Onigiri (Rice Balls) came about. Taking off Sumo Onigiri's menu description, Onigiris are popular among bento (single portion home-packed meal) makers. It's usually rice shaped into a triangle, oval or sphere with filling in the middle, wrapped in noti (toasted seaweed). The word "onigiri" literally means "taking hold of with your hands", which was exactly what we did to enjoy these balls. It had a nice sweet savoury taste to it. continue reading

Established on last year, Sumo Onigiri has 2 branches at Damansara Utama and Kuchai Lama.Last week, we dropped by its Kuchai Lama branch occupying only half of the shop unit. There are 3 types of seating at Kuchai Lama branch; whether to face beautiful red leaves scene, chat with friends or just sit at the bar counter watching the preparation process.Inari Cheese Onigiri (with mashed potato) RM8.90A choice made as suggested by the staff. Add another RM2 for a set meal including chawanmushi and miso soup.Green tea was on separate order.Miso soup of spring onion, seaweed and tofuMediocre, but enough to warm the stomach.Chawanmushi was smooth in texture yet expect no ingredient but plain steamed egg.Would be better if the background music just stick on Japanese song only in creating the ambience of Japan. continue reading

When I had my eye on this new outlet in Kuchai Lama called the Sumo Onigiri, I was quite excited and told myself to return to this area to review this restaurant. The restaurant occupies half a shop lot and within the half shop lot, half the space is taken up by the onigiri bar, leaving very few and little space for tables and chairs. I am guessing most people would just order it as a take away since they are so easily and conveniently consumed. This is a very clever Japanese dish that I have always been very impressed with. It was really brilliant and convenient. The sets would be serve with mash potato where else there is also options of a great variety of ala carte rice balls with different fillings. I like something more moist in it or that amount of rice would be really dull and dry. Some of the rice balls comes with entire sheet of Japanese seaweed and that is great if consume immediately before the seaweed turns soft. The rice balls are mixed with ebiko so every bite is filled with popping balls within the sushi rice. The rice was a little hard which makes them least to my liking but the taste if still fine when consume immediately when served. The Cheese filling rice ball was pressed with some cheese slices in it so that makes the rice ball not too boring or bland in flavour. This was not too bad in flavour but I do prefer softer texture from the rice. The chawanmushi that comes with the set is on the other hand a little bland in taste but very smooth in the texture. Expect plain chawanmushi with no extra ingredients in it. When served hot, would be a very comforting starter. Those with huge appetitive shall fear not as the Sumo Onigiri also sells rice set in case the rice ball is too tiny. There is the Sumo onigiri special set which comes with some rice, a few seaweed sheets, some shredded egg omelet, mashed potato, baby octopus, fish egg, and a salmon sashimi slice. Order this only if the rice ball did not attract your attention. Otherwise let’s just stick to their forte. This set also comes with steam egg and a miso soup. Of which the soup was alright but not as flavourful as it should be. Nevertheless, it was still palatable and not too bad in taste. The shop is very clean and the wall paper is very cute with many sumo cartoons. Be sure to check out the history and origin of rice ball.It is a good spot for quick grab and go, but I don't recommend this for good taste. continue reading

Famous of its Japanese Onigiri, this restaurant provide simple and nice set meals for Japanese food lover. They had other different types inventive set like western style onigiri, which fuses western with Japanese flavours through the combination of cheese, ham with onigiri rice. I'd tried this Sumo Special set - Sumo Takoyaki Set at the price of RM 9.80 each.Everyset of sumo special comes with rice, tamago, mash potato, hot Miso soup and Chawamushi !There savoury takoyaki are filled with Japanese diced octopus( thats why it is called as tako),and topped with takoyaki sauce along with mayonese. You can either match this bite with rice or you can customized your own takoyaki onigiri since the set comes with 2 big slices of seaweed. continue reading
