Nasi Kandar Pelita at Jalan Ampang must be the most popular Mamak Restaurant in the city center. On normal weekdays it's packed during breakfast, lunch & dinner with the office crowd. On weekend mornings and lunch hours not so much.. but come nightfall it's packed to the brim with the trendy club-hopping crowd looking to munch on something before or after their clubbing outings! It can be so hard to get a table during their peak hours.. I love their Nasi Lemak Ayam, Mee Goreng Mamak, and Naan C

Mango LassiAs for this Mango Lassi, it’s quite ordinary and nothing to boast about. The drink lacks the mango taste it should possess and also not milky enough. Therefore, it lacks the consistency and less concentrated that the same fare I enjoy at other Middle Eastern eatery. There isn’t any hint that original yogurt has been used but rather just candied drink with some mango syrup.

MurtabakThis snack which is normally seen especially during the month of Ramadhan is pretty good and not too salty. It’s chicken murtabak and the filling is full of onions with some minced chicken in beaten egg. The skin which enwraps these mixed ingredients is quite thin and decently pan-fried. It is then served with some curry, dahl and pickled onions in syrup.

Beriani RiceAgain, a simple menu like this fares better than the tandoori chicken. At least, the fried chicken here is more flavoured with herbs and much better marinated. It’s still juicy and tender. Rice is pretty good too and fragrantly cooked with the herbs. Not forgetting some slices of cucumber and pineapple to complete this simple dish.

NaanFortunately, there is this simple staple fare that kind of make up the previous disappointment. The Naan here is served just nice with the right crispiness and thickness. Not too floury and good to go with the 3 types of gravy, which includes dahl, curry and minty lime relish. Another plus point is the bread is moderately baked as there isn’t any apparent scorched part, which otherwise, I would have to spend some time to remove them.

Tandoori ChickenCome next is the reddish grilled chicken that goes by the name Tandoori Chicken. It’s quite a common dish to be ordered when you tete a tete at any mamak shop. These cutlets of chicken have been earlier marinated with some herbs before chargrilled. The meat is tender and not spicy as its fiery colour. Nevertheless, the taste is quite bland is without the lime, and I suppose the flavor hasn’t really got into the meat thus not as delicious as anticipated.

Goat’s Milk Well, come to this cuisine, definitely not within my existing food coverage, hehe. Nevertheless, am always keeping my options open for more discoveries Luckily am still able to have my own pick, Goat’s Milk, although am bit clueless at first of what to order, hehe. The goat’s milk from here is surprisingly without any strong goatish smell. It’s actually bit sweet with some milk taste. However, the hot drink is kind of too dilute for me, and I wonder if they have added any sugar into it? Hmm….. I was expecting some fresh goat’s milk from this local fare.

Chicken tandoori. The chicken tandoori was served with three types of sauces - dhal, curry and some green sauce. The chicken tandoori was coated with yoghurt and tandoori sauce and being baked. The seasonings were strong and very fragrant with the tandoori aroma. The chicken meat however was slightly on the dry side. It was not too salty though. The naan was crispy.

Sirap Ais. It was a very hot weather that day. Normally I do not order drinks during lunch but I could not stand the heat and I had to ordered an icy drink. I went with Sirap Ais. It came with half portion of ice and half syrup water. The drink was diluted and I think they could have added more syrup. The drink was slightly sweet only as it does not has enough syrup in it. Not good.

Mee Goreng. That day I was quite lazy to queue up as the queue was long. So I chose a table and sat down and placed my order for mee goreng. The mee goreng came with a lime, topped with lettuce. It has very minimal ingredients such as beancurd and onions. The mee was quite moist which I don't prefer. The lime added some tanginess to it. It was slightly salty. The beancurd was smooth.

Pasembur. The rojak has quite a number of ingredients - crackers, fried dough fritters, boiled potatos, prawn fritters, beancurd, sengkuang and cucumber slices. The pasembur sauce was thick and it was sweet though. The sauce was not too spicy. The fried dough fritters, prawns fritters were very crispy and salty. The beancurd was soft. The sengkuang and cucumber was crunchy.

As my lunch, I took long bean, fried chicken and deep fried bittergout. The deep fried bittergout was very bitter and deep fried till crispiness. I can even just eat it by its own. The long beans was cooked with eggs and it was just normal, not too salty. The fried chicken was crispy and salty too. The meat was moist despite being deep fried and it was tender. I praised myself for the good combination.
