Subang Jaya’s SS15 is a vibrant favourite of foodies all over the Klang Valley as it is the hub of new and experimental dining concepts. Many of the eateries offer novel dishes that were thought up and created by their founders and owners.
Most of these places were started by young professionals with a passion for the F&B industry, and have left their cushy office jobs to offer hipster cafe enthusiasts a chance to indulge in some good ol’ comfort food, with an outstanding dining atmosphere to boot.
Here, in no particular order, are the latest and trendiest cafes in SS15 right now:
(Some of the establishments below are non halal.)
Jibril’s Lounge is in fact described by its founders as a Halal speakeasy which serves non-alcoholic drinks and tasty sweet and savoury snacks to go with your drinks. To enter Jibril’s, you have to look for the camouflaged door behind the Sangkaya ice cream shop. Once you’ve found the door and pushed on it, you will enter a different world completely. The lounge is slightly dim with many private corners for quiet chats. One of the must try drinks here is the Potter, as well as their salted egg butter chicken with rice dish.
Rarely in Malaysia can you find Mexican food, but Thyme Out offers delicious Mexican fare at affordable prices. Get your burritos, quesadillas and tacos with your favourite sauces and salsas. Don’t miss out on their nachos as well, served with your choice of sauce (our favourite choice is the cheese sauce). You can also order Kumara or Sweet potato chips to share with your friends and to add some sweet crunch to your meal.
You’ll never see Thai food served like this anywhere, in a hipster cafe like setting. Here, you will find boat noodles with either chicken or beef for only RM1.90 each. Get ready to pile your bowls up high! In addition to that, there are also many Thai favourites like mango salad, fried tomyam rice and sweet mango sticky rice for dessert. You also have the option of ordering rice with several dishes to choose from like beef, fried green vegetables and egg.
You always expect a cafe to focus on serving coffee, but Hype’s claim to fame is actually their teas. If you are lost and you don’t know what to order when you visit, we recommend you have a chat with their friendly barista who will give you an expert opinion on what best suits you. Your tea will come in a unique teacup and pot set. You also get to choose any of the cakes on display to pair up with your beverage.
With such a suggestive name, you can hardly expect the place to be tame and innocent. One glance at the menu and those of you familiar with adult entertainment will probably recognize a few names. Since their kitchen closes at 9pm, we missed their main dishes, but instead had a chance to try their awesome cakes. Both the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel come highly recommended.
This aptly named cafe has plenty of its namesake, space. The seating is pushed to the sides of the walls and you get to sit on a long cement slab made comfy with many fluffy cushions. We loved the minimalistic design with black, white and grey, and the occasional red thrown in.
Both tea and coffee are served here all day, and for smokers there is a veranda overlooking the busy ss15 street below, which offers a great view for chilling out.
The Peranakan tiles at the entrance are a dead giveaway regarding the theme of this cafe’s food and drinks, which are western dishes with an Asian twist. Their best sellers are the oink oink ribs and ‘Chu Yao Char’ angel hair pasta which is tossed in pork lard. So, if you’re a fan of pork and pork related dishes, this is definitely the cafe you want to visit. For breakfast, you can consider the Nutty Jantan, which are two soft boiled eggs served with slices of bread topped with nuts and honey.
This is actually the old Ode Art cafe that has been given a makeover by a new management. At first we did not expect much, but upon entering, you can feel that the new owners really worked hard making the place feel warm and cosy. There are tonnes of solid food to choose from on the new menu, including brunch favourites like the Aussie baked eggs dish. We were fortunate to try their Belgian mousse and it really was like heaven melting in your mouth.
At Loha, you’ll meet the warmest and friendliest staff ever, who are more than willing to treat you like family once you set foot inside. The calming interior is matched by equally good food. No wonder this place is packed at lunchtime. They offer daily affordable lunch sets for less than RM12, perfect for the college students nearby. All the dishes are modern twists on traditional Japanese favourites which come in generous portions.
Specializing in chicken wings, here you can find your favourite wings in six different styles, with garlic cheese, original hot sauce, original bbq, asian sensation sauce, honey mustard or naked hot wings. If you’re new, we recommend you order the sample platter that has one of each type so you can decide which one you like. Additionally, you can choose additional orders of pasta or potato skins too!
