Nyonya achar is truly an acquired taste. I used to eat this seasonally, as my mum would make these maybe once or twice a year. It's a lot of work to prepare, so the high price tag is justified (RM14 for a jar). It's basically pickled vegetables, with the highlight being pickled green chili stuffed with young papaya. Generally, everything is equally sour and sweet, and the chili is somewhat spicy. It can be eaten as snacks or together with rice and dishes.

I'm not even gonna start about what this durian apam balik resembles. Looks aside, this particular kuih from Baba Charlie is unimpressive. Texture is dense but not gooey enough, and it lacks the fragrance of durian (only small bits are inside, with little flavour). It's also not sweet and quite bland.

I don't know what it is with nyonya kuih and their need to colour everything weirdly, but this blue kuih does visually appeal. The middle layer tastes coconutty and hints of the sweetness of gula melaka. The top and bottom layers are loaded with sago and tastes mostly neutral.

So, the famous Baba Charlie really lives up to his reputation for really good Nyonya kuih. This time around, I had the kuih talam as my dessert after meals. The top layer is ricey and coconutty, very aromatic and sweet. The bottom layer is super gooey and smells of pandan.

Everywhere we go in Malacca, onde-onde is something we're always quick to pick up when stumbling across any promising shop selling them. The one at Baba Charlie is indeed the best. Thin "shell", loads of coconut shavings, and plenty of molten gula melaka - sweet and gooey.

I typically prefer regular savoury bak chang as opposed to Nyonya chang, but I decided to give this one a try. Well, the rice was very very sticky and the filling was sweet and savoury at the same time, and in good quantity. Still, I prefer a more savoury version.

Now, this is what yam cake is supposed to be like. Dense and heavy, full of chunky yam, and topped with dried shrimp. The flavour is very yammy, and you can't taste any cheap flour (that's commonly used as a filler to cheapen it). Served with sweet chilli sauce.

We noticed a lot of tables ordering this, so it piqued our curiosity - we just had to try it. The fish balls are home-made, and taste like a mix of pork and fish (which I think it was) - it was fresh, soft, and very tasty. Popiah was not too oily, and juicy. Prawn crackers were very crispy.

This is one of three "famous" duck noodles in Malacca; this one being in the Tengkera/Limbongan area. Every day we passed by, it's crowded, and finally on the third day we decided to try. Verdict? Well, the soup is very herby, and the sauce is very starchy. Flavour-wise, not much beyond the duck, which was tender and not very gamey. Kuey teow was a poor choice, I should've opted for yellow mee.

tongue really yummy! The shop is really quiet and only an old woman is taking care of the shop. Most people would wonder if there is anything nice since it is at the end of the streets. It is no wonder no one would come inside this shop. I am a person who is quite adventurous so I prefer to try food people haven’t rave about yet. The ice cream only cost RM3. The smell of fresh Durian is really good and all I could say that is really the best Durian ice cream I have ever tasted. The t...

I kind of regretted ordering this as the sting ray look so appetizing from the picture. I was proof wrong when the dishes was send to my table. Well, I should just believed the saying don’t judge the books from its cover’. The dish is cold when it reach my table. I don’t like my dishes to be cold. The flesh of the sting ray is hard since they had chosen the big sting ray. The flesh is cooked with a lot of herbs but still it doesn’t cover the fact that it is a cold dishes and so there...
