Taipei 101 OK Dec 24, 2013

Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Juices / Bubble Tea / Tea / Yogurt

Originally the shop lot of Mommy Wang, the business has changed hands and is under under a different franchise now. Like its predecessor, Taipei 101 serves similar Taiwan-styled food.

The main attraction of Taiwanese food is that it appeals to the mainstream crowd. The dishes are usually easy to eat, similar to local cuisine, and quite affordable. I believe this is the selling point of Taipei 101.

We arrived for lunch and ordered a simple meal for two.

First, Japanese Curry Chicken Rice (日式咖哩鸡扒饭, RM10.90) is something special and worth a try. I like how the gravy and potatoes taste together with the chicken fillet.

Before World War II, Formosa (former name of Taiwan) was a Japanese colony. This explains why Taiwanese cuisine retains certain elements of the Japanese's.

Taiwanese Pork Rice (台式猪排饭, RM7.90) is probably more well-known. The meat is done well, not too dry like some other restaurants.

Of course, we cannot claim that we went to a Taiwanese restaurant without ordered a serving of Sweet Potato With Plum Powder (甘梅地瓜, RM4.80). I think I am addicted to it, but I must remind myself that this is deep-fried and nutritionally equivalent to French Fries.

For drinks, we had Papaya Milk Shake (木瓜牛奶, RM4.50) and Champagne Pearl Milk Tea (香槟珍珠奶茶, RM3.90). However, I think it's similar to many other places.

All About Sugar & Gift OK Dec 23, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles | Desserts

If you have some friends from out-of-town and would like them to try some specialty desserts, why not head over to All About Sugar & Gift (团圆)?

This painstakingly-decorated shop along the narrow Lorong Susu specializes in tangyuan (汤圆), a dish of spherical glutinous rice flour typically served during the Lantern Festival. But the presence of this shop indicates that people are impatient to wait till the annual Lantern Festival to satisfy their cravings.

We placed an order of Sweet Tang Yuan (子孙满堂), whose Chinese name is obviously a play on the word "sugar". This dish is mixture of several different types of tangyuan (filled and unfilled) in clear ginger syrup.

Next, Tiramisu Tang Yuan (提拉米苏汤圆) is also a real treat! The tangyuan is filled with chocolate tiramisu, and served in a bowl of milk soup. It is best to eat it hot to taste the sweet chocolate oozing out of each punctured tangyuan.

Another signature dish is the Peanut Tang Yuan (花生汤圆). The tangyuan in this dessert has sweet peanut paste filling, with sweet peanut soup to complement it. It was a delicious dish indeed!

For dessert, we wrapped up with an order of Dragon Fruit Sago (龙珠果西米露). The sago (tapioca pudding) is served with several tangyuan, dragonfruit, mango, longan and kiwi. Perhaps because it is served cold, the flavor is not as impressive as the others.

The shop also sells solid food, but we will leave this for a future visit. I foresee that we will drop by again in the near term!

Soba Yoshi OK Dec 23, 2013
Categories : Food court | Sweets/Snack

Soba Yoshi is a "humble" Japanese restaurant tucked in a quiet corner of Krystal Point. It is not a very crowded place even on Friday noons, where a throng of Free Industrial Zone employees are expected to pour out in search of nice bites like hungry ghosts. Yet, their food is surprisingly nice and affordable compared to other Japanese restaurants in the nearby area.

If you are looking for more "filling" dishes, you should opt for the bento sets, which we did. Depending on the type, the price can vary from RM20 to almost RM60.

The first bento set is Salmon Bento. It is served with grilled salmon, rice, miso soup, chawanmushi, potato salad and a serving of fruit (watermelon). The grilled salmon is nicely cooked with teriyaki sauce.

The second dish is the Mixed Bento. It includes grilled mackerel, assorted tempura (prawns, sweet potato, cucumber etc), assorted sashimi and rice. The sashimi is fresh but the portions could have been bigger.

Overall, we were satisfied with the food. No doubt, we will be back quite often.

Tasty Noodles Smile Mar 26, 2014

The Signature One Ton Mee is delicious dish. The wantan noodles are handmade, which explains the springy and fine texture. As I requested for the dry version, the wantan noodles are drained dry and then tossed with black sauce (made of oyster and soy sauce).
Other delicacies on the Signature One Ton Mee are several nice slices of barbecued pork, a piece of pork wantan and some choy sum vegetable leaves. The barbecued pork is reasonably tender and pleasant to my taste buds. The pork wantan is quite delectable too, but there is only one piece for me to enjoy.

Cosy Cafe Smile Mar 23, 2014

Categories : Chinese | Western variety | Café | Steaks / Chops | Ramen/Udon/Soba

The interior of the store is quite small. There are barely enough seats for 20 people.

The Spaghetti Bolognese Beef is reasonably light on the mouth, but the commendable aspect is the creamy bolognese sauce which complements well with the pasta. Finely minced beef give a sense of weight to the otherwise-simple meal.
