Mixed Braised OK Jul 31, 2013   (Related Review)

Apart from their famous duck, we were also recommended on their other specialty braised Duck Liver, Duck stomach and pig head meat. Since we wanted to just give it a try (not everybody in the table fancies these spare parts), we ordered a mix of everything.

Even though we ordered a small dish, it turned out to be quite huge in quantity! As ordered, it has all 3 dishes into one. The duck liver was very strong in flavour, in fact it was the strongest among the three. It was a little powdery, but that was expected as it was the nature of the dish.
The duck stomach was a little less strong tasting, but it has a nice chewy texture to it which I find it quite delectable.
Finally, the pig head meat was the best among the three for me. If I was not told that it came from the head, I wouldn't have been able to tell. The meat was scrumptious with a slight layer of fat along with a nice amount of lean pork in it. Dipped into their chilli sauce, this was good.

Ai Yu Jelly Smile Jul 31, 2013   (Related Review)

Translated from chinese, this drink cum dessert actually means 'Love Ice'. As I rarely find restaurants in KL offering this, I have decided to give it a try.

This drink/dessert comes in a nice elevated bowl and served with a straw to suck out the drink and a spoon to scoop the jelly out.

The jelly was made quite well, as it was firm enough without being too tough or chewy. The drink part has a nice sweet lime taste to it, which is very refreshing. This drink/dessert is quite refreshing as well as appetizing as they gave a nice amount of ice and it has a tinge of sourness to it.

I am glad I ordered it.

The waitress also recommended for us to try their braised salted vegetables, so we can have the meal to be more balanced.

Not really a big fan of salted vegetables, I only ordered a small portion. This dish arrived very quickly, most likely because it was already cooked.

Their braised salted was surprisingly very good. It did not have a strong smell of the salted vegetable (which I preferred) but the flavour of the braised gravy was good. It matches the duck and the rice which gives me more appetite throughout the meal.

Skudai Duck Smile Jul 31, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

Came by Johor for a business trip. That night I was looking for dinner when I found many recommendations online that I should try the Skudai Duck. Lucky for me, the opening hours of this restaurant is until 9pm.

First thing I noticed when I found the restaurant is how traditional the restaurant looked. It still maintains the old school style, most likely unchanged for decades.

They have a huge picture of the famous ho chiak food reviewer with probably the founder/owner of the restaurant. I suppose it is their source of pride and recognition of this restaurant.

Interior of the restaurant. Note the amount of chilli sauce which is used to be served with the duck. They also sell some local produce in this restaurant such as biscuits, snacks and even fresh banana.
Braised Duck

Braised Duck

I ordered their braised duck which is their signature dish. I was given a choice of noodles or rice. I rarely have noodles at night so I opted for the rice instead.
Their service is quite fast, probably because of the lack of customers in the restaurant that night. The food arrived very quickly. The duck actually tastes very well as it was full of flavour and taste. However, I find that the meat is too thinly sliced, which does not give me the full satisfying bite of the duck meat.

The rice served was oily rice, which goes quite well with the duck.
Braised Egg

Braised Egg

Apart from the duck, I also ordered a couple of eggs as well. Their eggs were well flavoured with the taste and aroma of the gravy, most likely cooked together with their duck.

All in all, a good meal, although I would have preferred a thicker cut on the duck.
