Fiery Tom Yam! OK Jul 28, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

we decided to stop by this Village Fish Head Mee Hoon for lunchy one day, seeing that it has been in our to-makan list for a looong while but never bothered to drive all the way to Weld Quay for it. finally got to cross it out from the list!

it was a scorching hot noon, luckily we scored a table strategically placed in front of a cooler. the workers suggested us to sit next door, which is a more well-ventilated space, but cooler is obviously a smarter choice. we didn't even sweat one bit throughout our makan session.

we sat there for a while, waiting for the workers to approach us with the menu. but were greeted with "you have to order at the front there one". okay so obviously we were first-timer there. cos i saw those who came in later indeed walked straight to the kitchen to order first before finding table :/

there's three main dishes to choose, fish head mee hoon (you can opt not to have fish head), tom yum and porridge. guess what i had wtf

and some other ingredients for you to add on like fish/meat balls, enoki/button mushroom, surimi(s), innards (ewww) and..

fried fish or

fresh fish fillets!

fish flesh mee hoon soup | RM 11
LeeChing ordered mee hoon soup and had fried and fresh fish fillets and pig kidney (ewww) as toppings.

one thing that realllly bothers us is, why Penang's fish head mee hoon is so muchy different from northern region's??? i likey mine milky and served with preserved vegetables! sad this was just another bowl of mee hoon drenched in clear broth! so misleading!

the broth was flavourful according to LeeChing, however not that best she ever had. price was slightly pricey. but they are not stingy with the ingredients. there's about 7 pieces of fish fillet (2 fried + 5 fresh) and handful of innard.

Tom Yum Mee Hoon | RM 10
MAI!

i only wanted fish fillets for my Tom Yum as we ordered one side dish to go with our mee hoons. look at the vibrant colour, you know it's FIERY! the sour and spicy flavours were proportional to my liking. the fish fillets are berry fresh too! but then again, it's not the best. my favourite is still this small Thai stall (at Sungai Dua) with Wang Thai comes close at second!

Deep-Fried Donnowhatfish | RM 8
saw all the other tables had a plate of fried thingy (i didn't look too close sked later people think i pervert) on it, so i asked the cook, what's that they having. she told it's some fried fish. we decided to have a plate as well!

the fishes were fried to perfection, so so crispy that you can almost gobble down the whole thing except the back bone! but at the price of RM 2 per piece, it's expensive lo as the fish is only merely slightly larger than half of my palm.

but i'll come back for the tom yum, at night. eating tom yum at searing hot noon with no air-conditioner is a big no-no.

German & European Bistro OK Nov 30, 2013
Categories : German | Bar & Pub | Steaks / Chops

we had a guest visiting Penang some time ago! she wanted to try the pork knuckle at Ingolf’s badly. but we didn’t want to put up with the jam. we would have starved to dead if we were to travel all the way to Tanjung Bungah. imagine the jam. no thanks!

so we made do with Berlin’s Bier Houz which located just 10 mins away! so convenient and confirm no traffic jam.

ambience is relaxing with pop songs playing at the background. apparently it’s where working adults love to hang out after duty. enjoying a pint (or two) of quality German beer during happy hour over tittle-tattling. prolly about their moronic bossie

the aged menu

they offer a wide variety of dishes, from salads to pasta to pork knuckle! for drinks, you can opt for either draught bier or juices or cocktails or liquor!

left to right: Ice Blended Chocolate | RM 10; Hot Cappuccino | RM 6; Hot Chocolate | RM6; Ice Blended Latte | RM 10
drinks were all decent. i was overjoyed to see generous amount of whipped cream! what diet? fuck it!

will bring the boyf here next time as he’s an German beer enthusiast and i’ll update you guys after that!

btw, pardon the overexposure washout snapshots ya. it’s dark and i have no choice but to fire the flash.

Pasta alla Carbonara | RM 18.80
Fettuccine pasta drenched in a pool of rich cream sauce with bacon, peper flavoured ham and mushroom.

my friend commented it’s mediocre. we can easily whip this up at home ourselves.

Pasta all' Arrabbiata | RM 25.80
i usually go for aglio olio or tomato sauce based pasta instead of cream.

this al dente pasta had the right hint of spiciness which really spiced up my palate! living up its name huh (arrabbiata means spicy in Italian) shrimps were berry huge and fresh!

Double Cheese Pork Burger | RM 16.80
home made pork patty sandwiched between sesame bun with two slices of cheese and some green, served with a side of German frites. the patty was thick however it’s tasted a tad bland for our liking.

Berlin's Special Pork Ribs | RM 27.80
premium ribs richly seasoned with spices and slow-smoked, served on a bed of mashed potatoes and vegetables. the dark strips are actually black fungus, surprisingly. and something lagi surprising was, the mashed potatoes had some minced meat hidden in it, giving the mud a rough texture, which is alright to me. it’s good to try something different ma.

this is definitely value for moolah, three HUGE chunks of ribs which its meat were berry tender and juicy. it would taste better if they were seasoned longer. the flavour was all at the surface, within the meat, it’s bland. same thing like the burger

aftermath! hehe

lovely cafe Smile Sep 30, 2013

i was running errand at Little India together with labmates cum lunchy buddies the other day. we were pondering what-to-mum for lunchy, and G suggested Chai Diam Ma and i quickly said YESH excitedly since i have not tried it before while ALL of them went without me some time ago tsk.

i was enticed by the art piece displayed at the entrance. it’s so errrr raw.

they even DIY-ed their menu {Penang} Lunchy @ Chai Diam Ma, Queen Street

i couldn’t resist snapping around this cute lil’ cafe after ordering my food.

handmade dolls for sale. keychains, accessories, clothing and some other knick-knack can be seen all around the cafe, which are up for sale too!

btw, chai diam ma means sundry shop in hokkien! i’m so used to chap fo pou (cantonese) though.

the al-fresco area. it was a rather hot day, so we opted indoor, with comfy couch.

and i learned that most of the furnitures are actually recycled. that’s why they look run-down. but i can assure you they are sturdy!

the menu is limited but they do have some daily specials which vary from day to day. and because the dishes are prepared fresh, hence the waiting time is slightly longer compared to other cafe.

Watermelon Juice | RM 5; Honey Lemon | RM 6; Passion Fruit Milkshake; RM 8
Cele said the juice was tasteless. i looked back at the menu, it states ’100% fresh fruit & sugar free’. haiyo no wonder la :/.honey lemon was mediocre while the milkshake was decent, berry milky according to CC.

Lasagna with Meat Sauce | RM 14
CC loves this to bits! i had a spoon and it’s actually berry tasty, berry cheesy too! the salad served consisted slices of tomato, zucchini, capsicum and rocket leaves, with balsamic vinegar dressing, i think.

Baked Macaroni with Bacon & Mushroom | RM 14
mine! again, berry cheesy. taste wise, was a tad bland. but the bacon made it up! the strips are slightly crunchy, just the way i likey!

we would have enjoyed our quaint lunchy more if we weren’t summon back to lab.

Korean Toast! OK Sep 30, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Café

i get really excited when there’s new eatery opening at Queensbay Mall aka AntzSecondHome! and one of it which opens its door to Penangites recently is Isaac Toast & Coffee!

located at LG floor of Queensbay Mall, few doors away from The Little Nyonya, opposite of Sticky, is this Isaac Toast & Coffee, originates from South Korea. Isaac Toast & Coffee is founded by a Korean lady, her business started with just a tiny stall to make ends meet when her hubby was ill. her hubby later recuperated and their business gradually blooms. now there’s more than 900 of Isaac Toast & Coffee outlets spreading all over South Korea and also worldwide and it’s still expanding.

and now you get to have a taste of Korean sandwich! this outlet is also the very first Isaac Toast & Coffee in Malaysia!

and NO, blogger Isaac Tan is not associated with this. haha.

the interior is simple yet cosy, i would say. seems like a great place for brekkie (or brunch) or tea break. seating is limited though.

their walls are decorated with painting and their slogan, the happiness together {Penang} Isaac Toast & Coffee @ Queensbay Mall the whole environment oozes positive vibe {Penang} Isaac Toast & Coffee @ Queensbay Mall as red symbolizes vitality and energy and passion!

their one-page menu revolves around toast (or sandwich) and bagels and hot & cold beverage. their standard toast consists of two buttery bread, fluffy egg and topped with their special Isaac sauce. altogether there’s 8 different topping that you can add to your toast with price ranging RM 6.90 – RM 9.90.

Ham Cheese Toast | RM 6.90 (Chicken); RM 7.30 (Turkey)
first one we had was Turkey Ham Cheese Toast, which obviously had ham & a slice of cheddar sandwiched between fragrant bread and egg. breads were pan-fried to golden brown and slightly charred at the edges. the special Isaac sauce tasted like.. French toast.. or sweetened light mayonnaise, instead of milky white, it’s translucent. every toast will be served in a paper envelop which makes devouring easy, without staining your hand.

some might find the toast a lil’ too sweet for your liking. i did reflect it to the person in charge, apparently they have localized the sweetness. once a real Korean dropped by this Penang outlet and had a toast, he grumbled that the sauce was not sweet enough for him =.= Korean can really handle sweet huh. i can imagine how sickly sweet the authentic one tastes. gosh.

Chicken MVP | RM9.90
you know what MVP stands for? no don’t try to go too far, it’s just Meat & Vegetable Product, wtf.

and that says it all. chicken patty topped with shredded white and purple cabbage on top of the basics. suitable for health-conscious, like me ehehehehehe. i love how the cabbage gave it a crunchy texture, and it also balanced out the meaty patty and sweety sauce. you may opt for beef patty.

one thing i noticed is, they studded the fresh and fluffy egg with corn kernels! this also adds slight crunch texture in other toasts that without vegetable.

and toast is best paired with a cuppa coffee/chocolate!

Cafe Mocha | RM 8.50
seriously, i judge a coffee by its art. yes i’m shallow liddat. and i’m pretty sure most of you do too {Penang} Isaac Toast & Coffee @ Queensbay Mall at only RM 8.50 and you’ll get a pretty hot (haha) cuppa coffee, good deal eh.

i don’t get any art at Mugshot Cafe even though i paid 10 buck. pfft.

Cappucino | RM7.50
a 3D coffee art! or catppucino! it’s available upon request without any additional charges!

overall, Isaac Toast & Coffee is a place to get your toast craving fixed and a nicely-decorated coffee!

My Favourite Makan Place in Muar! Smile Sep 08, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles

i managed to squeeze in a quick Muar trip when i was homed during Raya holiday! we traveled to Muar pretty frequent as it’s just 45 mins away. moreover Muar was where popo gave birth to her children, so Muar always have a special spot in my maternal aunts’ & uncles’ heart. every second day of Chinese New Year, we will sure make a trip down and visit the relatives there.

and whenever we’re at Muar, there’s one eatery that we must pilgrimage to, ie. Kedai Makanan Yong Kee which located at Jalan Haji Abu, or colloquially known as Tham Jiak Street.

Kedai Makanan Yong Kee is a hub where all our favourite stalls gather, it’s like killing many birds at once. we arrived at noon and maaaan it was crowded and luckily we managed to seize a small table hehe

sorry no shop frontal shot cos i was too famished to remember that. i made it up by showing you guys more foodie photos okie

Otak-otak

had otak-otak as appetiser! there’s many other stalls around but we heart this stall the most as others either have too muchy flavouring or hardly can bite any fish flesh.

you can opt for fish or prawn otak-otak or you can even buy it in a larger paste form in a box to be steamed at home!

Wanton Mee

this is the plate of wanton mee that mami and her siblings grew up eating! honestly i find it bland but mami and yiyi (mami’s sis) savour it as if it’s the best they ever tasted =.=

the char siew color might put it off a little, it’s more reddish than ordinary one.

Pork Satay

we also had sticks of porkie satays and ketupat.

Yong Kee Siu Lap Rice

this roast porksome stall (and the wanton mee) is the most famous one in Muar. you can mix and match what you want, we had roast sausage, siu yuk and char siew. all meat was tender and flavourful. nom.

rice drizzled with their special gravy and the chili sauce is yummy! not ordinary condiment you get with chiken rice! lol
