Reasonable price, decent dishes Smile Jun 09, 2016

Categories : Korean | Restaurant | BBQ

Whenever I’m watching Korean variety shows such as Running Man or Roommate, their Korean cuisines always make me drooling, including tofu stew, bulgogi, bimbibap, kimchi and etc. Talking about Korean Cuisine, the flourishing of Korean restaurants no doubt makes us spoil for choice.

San Nan Duel restaurant, hidden among the shop lots in Publika, serve you authentic Korean cuisine where you can get your craving fixed. Besides serving you an array of Korean cuisines, they have free flow side dishes, which is also a plus point.

We went for this squid and beef bulgogi set. This set is meant for sharing and we really didn’t expect the portion to be so big. Both squid and bulgogi are well-marinated and grilled to perfection, not too dry and not too raw, while you are chewing them you can still feel that the juices keep oozing out. It has strong flavor and mild spiciness, super piquant.

You can choose to wrap them with raw lettuce, where the fresh and crunchy lettuce gives you a different sensation, it helps you to balance out the oily level of squid and bulgogi at the same time. Or you can choose to eat with a bowl of steamed white rice, I’m sure that you will clear your rice real quick.

Their Tofu seafood jjigae stole everyone’s heart at the dining table. The stew soup comes with tofu, seafood such as clams, sea crab, mussel, prawns and squids, top with enoki mushroom, spring onion and an onsen egg. It’s served with a bowl of white steamed rice.
The soup has rich texture and it gives you an umami taste.

The fiery red color might scare you but fret not; the jjigae is not as spicy as you thought, even a person like me who don’t like spicy food, I can easily sipping down a few spoonful of the soup, it goes super well with white steamed rice too! We almost finished “drinking” the whole bowl in the end.

Their spring onion pan cake tastes average. I expected it to be crispy outside and moist inside, but it turned out too moist and too much starch. You might want to skip this as they serve pan cake as one of their side dishes as well, which you can refill unlimitedly.
We had squid and bulgogi set, spring onion pan cake, tofu seafood jjigae and kimchi fried rice, it costs us Rm30 per pax, we find it pretty reasonable as the taste is decent and the portion is big enough to make you stuffed.

Spending per head: Approximately RM30(晚餐)

We always refer Kajang as Satay town where the signature dishes of this small town. Besides satay, there's actually many hidden delicacies which is only well-known among the locals. I used to study at Kajang and today I would like to share about one of my favourite restaurants there.

Tien Pin restaurant, located at Jalan Bukit near NEC college, offer you a wide range of food made from fish, such as fish ball, fish paste and fish noodles. Moreover, they serve main dishes such as mee pok and desserts such as cold tau fu fa, rice dumplings and tong shui.

I love love love their fried chee cheong fan and fish noodles, you can hardly find this kind of combination at other places. The chee cheong fan which we usually have them for breakfast, is fried together with fish noodles, beansprouts and generous amount of pork lard.

The fish noodles are really chewy and bouncy, pair with chee cheong fan it offers you an unique combination, the pork lard makes the dish extra flavourful and aromatic.

Their signature mee pok, Tien Pin Mee Pok. Serve along with pork lard, minced pork and a bowl of their soup with fish pastes. Their fish pastes worth a try because it tastes so fresh.

Wash it down the main dishes with cold tau fu fa serves with brown sugar. Super refreshing!

Recommended Dish(es):  Fried chee cheong fan and fish noodles

Spending per head: Approximately RM10(晚餐)

Scallion Oil Noodles Smile Jun 10, 2016

Whenever we talk about Taman Connaught, we would think about the night market that happens every Wednesday night which draws huge crowd to pay a visit. Of course besides the night market, there are still a lot of hidden places in Taman Connaught that serve good food.

Today, I would like to recommend a place that me and my bf visit frequently, both of us get hooked by their noodles and we would drop by the shop to have our lunch almost every week.

One Meter Sunshine restaurant, located nearby UCSI university at Taman Connaught(same row as Starbucks), serve you authentic Chinese style noodles. It’s more like a stall instead of a restaurant as the space is quite limited, most of the customers have to sit outdoor. The stall does not have any fancy decorations either. However, you should not overlook their noodles.

Scallion oil noodles, handmade noodles tossed together with scallion oil topped off with scallions and minced pork. The origin of this noodle is actually from Jiang Nan, China. It might look simple but the taste totally blew us away. The texture of the handmade noodles is super springy and chewy, the scallion oil makes the noodles silkier, and it enhances the taste of the noodles even more.

I would recommend you to add their home-recipe chili pastes and a small spoonful of vinegar to your noodles, it gives you a hint of spiciness and sourness while eating, provides you multi-level taste to satisfy your taste bud.

On a side note, to some the noodles might be a bit oily, but for me, once in awhile should be okay, because it tastes real good! One Meter Sunshine serves you different kind of noodles as well as Chinese style snacks such as fried dumpling (gyoza), do try out yourself!

Big portion with reasonable price OK Jun 07, 2016

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Food court | Noodles | Bak Kut Teh | Yong Tau Fu

If you want to save some penny while having your meal at Publika, you should visit their eat food village because you can find the most affordable meals there. Besides their fish village yong tau fu, I’ve tried their pork organ soup with yam rice as well, which is not bad!

With RM11.60, you will be able to enjoy the set meal as shown as picture above. Yam rice comes with pork organ soup, braised tofu and braised egg. For the pork organ soup, you can decide what to add into the soup. If pig inner organ is not your thing, then just go for pork meat slices and pork meat ball.
I’ve added pork blood, pork intestine, pork liver, meat ball and pork belly into this bowl of clear soup. Though it’s added with so many ingredients, but the soup is super light and it tastes a bit sour. Hence, it’s perfect to go with a bowl of hot steamed yam rice.

They clean the pork organs thoroughly so it’s actually really fresh and doesn’t taste weird at all.The braised tofu and egg taste average, it’s simmered and soaked inside the sauce to enhance the taste, it would be better if the flavor is stronger.

You can see the real yam in the yam rice. The yam is cooked until super moist and basically you don’t have to chew much, it just melts in your mouth. It tasted a bit dry to my liking so I added some pork organ soup to make it more moistur-er. Overall, it tastes good and can be considered as a satisfying meal.

It’s slightly expensive than the pork organ soup from normal hawker center, but given its generous portion and the comfy environment of food village, I find it reasonable!

Categories : Chinese | Food court | Seafood | Yong Tau Fu

Publika is a truly hipster area given that so many unique cafes and restaurants located there. Besides cafes and restaurants, there’s one more place here that shouldn’t being underrated, which is their eat food village.

Their eat food village is what we often say food court or hawker centre, where different stalls different foods are available here. This food village is pretty “atas”, with air-conditioned and practices good hygiene. The prices are slightly more expensive than normal food court, but this is the most wallet-friendly meals here in Publika.

They offer quite a few selections including Pan Mee, Chicken Rice, Hokkien Mee, Bak kut teh and more.

I have tried a few stalls and I would like to recommend this Fish village Yong Tau Fu. The selection of Yong tau fu ranging from fish balls, fu chok, brinjal, chili, fish paste and many more. Basically it’s more than enough to satisfy your yong tau fu cravings.

You can choose their set meal which costs Rm9.50, with any four pieces of ingredients plus mee or mee hoon. They offer different types of mee, such as mee pok, Maggie mee, spinach mee, yee mee and mee hoon. It took my attention immediately because I can hardly find a stall that offers so many choices and I’m totally spoilt for choice.

I went for their normal mee pok, with lots of bean sprouts and scallions sprinkle on top. For the ingredients, I opted for brinjal, chilies, okra and fish cake. Their mee is really springy and it suits my liking very well. However, the portion might not be enough for a big eater. While for their Yong Tau Fu, everything taste average, and it’s stuffed with generous amount of fish meat inside.

I will not suggest you to choose their fritters though because the texture is so hard as if you are chewing a rock with your fragile teeth. They offer other set lunch as well, such as grill squid with petai, grill prawn with petai, grill seafood and more. Each set comes with a bowl of white steamed rice.

If you are tired of all the café foods or you want to save some penny, head over to their food village and explore yourself!
