Secret Loc OK May 25, 2016
Categories : Western variety | Café | Steaks / Chops | Noodles

Secret Loc, a brightly-lit and yet spacious restaurant located at Kuchai Lama, serves you western dishes such as pasta and breakfast set, as well as Hong Kong style cuisines such as dim sum and stir-fried hor fun.

Hokkien style fried Udon. It’s served with fresh prawns, squid, fish paste, vegetables and a generous amount of pork lard sprinkle on top. Udon is stir-fried with black soy sauce, the saltiness is just right.

Initially, there’s nothing to shout about the udon, however if you eat them together with pork lards, it will give you an “oomph”, the dish becomes super flavorful and it will get you hooked. In another words, crispy and oily pork lard is the highlight of the dish. It might sounds unhealthy but once in awhile should be alright isn’t?

Their prawn mee failed to meet our expectation though. The mee is kinda tasteless and we have no choice but to ask for a small plate of sambal to go with the mee. However, the portion is huge as it comes with fish pastes, hard-boiled egg, kangkung and prawns. The prawns are really fresh but fail to absorb the soup of the mee.

Mushroom soup is really creamy and rich in flavor. You will be able to find a lot of mushrooms inside the soup. Their garlic bread tastes good as well. Even if you dip the bread into the soup, you can still taste the fragrance of the garlic. Every bite is really crispy and satisfying.

There are singers performing on the stage while people enjoying their food. If you want to have a nice catch up with friends, I would suggest you to sit outdoor so that your conversation wouldn’t be interrupted by the singing performance.

Plat Kitchen OK May 24, 2016
Categories : Western variety | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Desserts

Even though the café is not located at the main road, Plat Kitchen still draws many café-hoppers to drop by and have a sip of coffee.

Upon entering, you will be attracted by their unique interiors. Navy blue is their main decoration color and almost every spot over there is photo-worthy.They serve a wide range of food in their menu, ranging from pasta, desserts, breakfast set, sandwiches and many more! Besides typical coffee, they offer an array of milkshake, chocolate drinks and tea as well.

As an ultimate fan of matcha, I went for their sizzling matcha brownie. A piece of matcha brownie is served on a sizzling hot plate, topped with a scoop of ice cream and biscuit. The staff then poured one small cup of matcha sauce over the dessert, and you can enjoy the “sizzling” sound while letting your brownie to slowly absorb the sauce.

The matcha brownie was a bit overrated. The brownie turned out to be a bit dry, it would be better if it has moisture-er texture. Sweetness was just right, the sauce can be more matcha-ish to create a heavier taste of matcha.

Besides, I ordered their matcha latte as well. The latte was super rich and have strong flavour of matcha, it tasted really silky. The price is reasonable for a rich latte like this.

You will be able to enjoy serenity here during weekdays, where a few tables are occupied by the patrons, chatting over their daily lifes and random thoughts. Indeed an ideal place for you to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Roti canai for breakfast OK May 18, 2016
Categories : Malay | Kopitiam

Melaka raya, a town center where tons of eateries are located here, ranging from high-rave café, restaurant and local mamak which will cause you facing dilemma to choose. How about sparing a morning and enjoy an authentic piece of roti canai? This shop is indeed a hidden gem in the town and yes, you might doubt that do they really sell roti canai here, given that “otak otak” is written on the sign board of the store front.
Though it looks like a Chinese kopitiam, but this place draws lots of local patrons early in the morning to get their roti canai cravings fix.

Their specialty would be their roti telur cheese. Fluffy dough with egg and generous amount of cheese stuffed inside, simple ingredients and it would be the best local breakfast to kick starts your day.

It’s super cheesy for every bite. Not the crispy type of roti canai but fluffy and chewy. I would recommend you to request for their curry sauce and dip the roti canai into the milky curry sauce to complete your meal.

Look at how much cheese is being stuffed inside! Expect to leave here with a bloated tummy!

If cheese is not your thing, you can go for their other options including roti telur, roti bawang or even the simplest roti kosong. While flipping over the newspaper, enjoying your favorite piece of roti canai with a cup of teh tarik, here go the perfect combination for a morning breakfast.

Sweet and Savory treats! OK May 17, 2016

Categories : Western variety | Stall / Warung | Sweets/Snack

Wanna to munch on some light snacks because your mouth simply just craving for food to eat? There you go! Hot & Roll will satisfy your taste bud by serving you something sweet and savory.

Having opened plenty of outlets nationwide, Hot & Rolls offer a wide variety of treats for you to choose from including Crispy, Parantha and Chapatti wrap. They aims to serve something that you can enjoy anytime and anywhere, hence while you are halfway through your shopping you can always having either sweet or savory treats to replenish your energy.

My favorite would be their sweet crispy banana chocolate wrap. They skillfully spread one spoonful of the flour paste on the cooking pan and let it sear until golden color. After that, the ingredients such as banana and chocolate sauce are added on the wrap and you are almost ready to enjoy it.One whole banana is added to the crispy wrap.

The wrap is super crispy as they make it really thin, you won’t be able to taste the starch of the wrap. The wrap itself is kinda tasteless but when you eat together with the sweet banana and chocolate sauce, it will get you hooked!

Besides, if you opt for some savory wrap, I would recommend you to try their chicken floss parantha, fluffy parantha combines with slightly salty chicken floss, taste surprisingly good as well!
The portion is huge so definitely worth every penny you spend. Besides, they always draws queue and you might need some patience to wait for your order to be served.

Ideal place to hang out OK May 13, 2016
Categories : Western variety | Café | Steaks / Chops | Burgers / Sandwiches | Noodles

There’s a lot of café located at Kuchai Lama and if you are looking for a place to hang out with your friends, Food Talk will be your good choice as they open until midnight 2am.

The café occupies two shop houses so it’s really spacious; they have unique decorations such as inspiring quotes, doodles and pictures. Most importantly, besides food and beverage, they provide card games for you to play with your friends.

Kam Hiong Fried Rice, the rice is fried to golden color and serves with spring onion, tomato slice and cucumber slice. The taste is average, nothing really special but the portion is enough to fill up your tummy.

Nutella toast. The toast a bit failed to meet my expectation though, the picture shows it supposes to have Nutella chocolate sauce drizzle on the top of the toast, but it came out without the sauce.

The toast is served with butter cream, maple syrup, and Nutella sauce sandwiched inside the toast. First few bites are good but it gets sticky and greasy after that, you might need to consider sharing with your friends instead of finish it by yourself. Besides, it’s a little bit overpricing for a simple toast like this.

However, FoodTalk will be an ideal place to hang out if you are looking for a café to chit-chat with your friends during unearthly hour when most of the restaurant is closed.
