Pumpkin noodles and fried wan ton OK Jun 14, 2016

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles

Most of you might get boring to eat the same kind of noodles every day, wanna to try something different to give your taste bud a break from the normal noodles? Have you ever heard of Spinach Noodles or Pumpkin Noodles?

A wooden stall which is located at Taman Kerjasama (Turn into the road when you see Petronas petrol station, go straight and you’ll be able to spot the stall), serves you different kind of noodles ranging from herbal noodles, spinach noodles, pumpkin noodles as well as Chinese style snacks such as dumpling and fried wanton.

This open-space stall is built under a big tree, owned by the locals, not only draw students from MMU University, but also office workers during lunch hour.

The owner makes their own noodles every day, using fresh ingredients such as pumpkin and spinach. They run out of spinach during my visit, hence I went for their pumpkin noodles.

The handmade noodles are served with minced pork, vegetables, chili pastes and three pieces of fried wan ton. Though it’s made from pumpkin, but the color of the noodles are similar to wan ton noodles. The thickness of the noodles is very thin, the texture is good and springy, but some of the noodles might stick together so make sure you toss them properly before eating.

We can’t really taste the pumpkin flavor from the noodles; the fried wan ton is super crispy, but a bit salty for our liking. The noodles come in small (Rm4) and big size (Rm5), the portion of small size might be too small for big eater.

On a brighter note, since it’s made from fresh vege, the noodles are very healthy to eat. Do come early as their signature noodles sold out pretty fast.

Affordable sushi everyday OK Jun 07, 2016

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant

Having sushi everyday without leaving a hole in your wallet is no longer a dream! I’ve found a great deal where you can enjoy quite decent sushi with almost half price lower than the usual sushi restaurant! Sounds attractive aren’t it?

Sushi World, located at Dataran Pahlawan right in front of Watsons, provide you wide selection of sushi with cheapest price. You will be able to see different sticker on different sushi and different color comes with different pricing, ranging from Rm1.30, Rm1.90, Rm2.40 to Rm2.90. They have a variety of flavors for you to choose from, such as tamago, salmon, inari, ebiko and many more!

Besides normal bite-size sushi, they have sushi roll which is larger in size as well, such as California roll and grilled eel sushi. You will definitely be able to find something you like over here.

Everything above cost less than Rm10! I picked their salmon sushi, ebiko sushi, California roll, crab stick sushi and maki with crab meat stuffed in between. I had high expectation on their salmon sushi because I love everything with salmon. However, their salmon sushi failed on me. It was not fresh and the salmon was a bit tasteless. Perhaps I will skip this for my next visit.

Besides salmon, other sushi tastes quite decent. But if you are looking for really fresh sushi, this might disappoint you as the sushi are being displayed for quite some time, it can’t give you the freshness as what you can get from a sushi restaurant.

Considering the affordable price, I will definitely visit here again to fix my sushi cravings!

Big portion with reasonable price OK Jun 07, 2016

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Food court | Noodles | Bak Kut Teh | Yong Tau Fu

If you want to save some penny while having your meal at Publika, you should visit their eat food village because you can find the most affordable meals there. Besides their fish village yong tau fu, I’ve tried their pork organ soup with yam rice as well, which is not bad!

With RM11.60, you will be able to enjoy the set meal as shown as picture above. Yam rice comes with pork organ soup, braised tofu and braised egg. For the pork organ soup, you can decide what to add into the soup. If pig inner organ is not your thing, then just go for pork meat slices and pork meat ball.
I’ve added pork blood, pork intestine, pork liver, meat ball and pork belly into this bowl of clear soup. Though it’s added with so many ingredients, but the soup is super light and it tastes a bit sour. Hence, it’s perfect to go with a bowl of hot steamed yam rice.

They clean the pork organs thoroughly so it’s actually really fresh and doesn’t taste weird at all.The braised tofu and egg taste average, it’s simmered and soaked inside the sauce to enhance the taste, it would be better if the flavor is stronger.

You can see the real yam in the yam rice. The yam is cooked until super moist and basically you don’t have to chew much, it just melts in your mouth. It tasted a bit dry to my liking so I added some pork organ soup to make it more moistur-er. Overall, it tastes good and can be considered as a satisfying meal.

It’s slightly expensive than the pork organ soup from normal hawker center, but given its generous portion and the comfy environment of food village, I find it reasonable!

Publika is a truly hipster area given that so many unique cafes and restaurants located there. Besides cafes and restaurants, there’s one more place here that shouldn’t being underrated, which is their eat food village.

Their eat food village is what we often say food court or hawker centre, where different stalls different foods are available here. This food village is pretty “atas”, with air-conditioned and practices good hygiene. The prices are slightly more expensive than normal food court, but this is the most wallet-friendly meals here in Publika.

They offer quite a few selections including Pan Mee, Chicken Rice, Hokkien Mee, Bak kut teh and more.

I have tried a few stalls and I would like to recommend this Fish village Yong Tau Fu. The selection of Yong tau fu ranging from fish balls, fu chok, brinjal, chili, fish paste and many more. Basically it’s more than enough to satisfy your yong tau fu cravings.

You can choose their set meal which costs Rm9.50, with any four pieces of ingredients plus mee or mee hoon. They offer different types of mee, such as mee pok, Maggie mee, spinach mee, yee mee and mee hoon. It took my attention immediately because I can hardly find a stall that offers so many choices and I’m totally spoilt for choice.

I went for their normal mee pok, with lots of bean sprouts and scallions sprinkle on top. For the ingredients, I opted for brinjal, chilies, okra and fish cake. Their mee is really springy and it suits my liking very well. However, the portion might not be enough for a big eater. While for their Yong Tau Fu, everything taste average, and it’s stuffed with generous amount of fish meat inside.

I will not suggest you to choose their fritters though because the texture is so hard as if you are chewing a rock with your fragile teeth. They offer other set lunch as well, such as grill squid with petai, grill prawn with petai, grill seafood and more. Each set comes with a bowl of white steamed rice.

If you are tired of all the café foods or you want to save some penny, head over to their food village and explore yourself!

Happened to be at ss2 few days ago and I were introduced to try out the wan tan mee at restaurant Chan Meng Kee.

The place was crowded by people especially office workers during lunch hour. I opted for their char siew wan tan mee and frankly to say, their wan tan mee failed to meet my expectation.

The mee came with char siew slice, spring onion, pickled green chilies and a bowl of wan tan soup. The mee was too moist to my liking. They stick together as a huge chunk and I was having a hard time to eat. I would prefer the mee to be dry and chewy a bit. Thus, there’s nothing to shout out about their mee.

To be fair, their char siew was pretty good. They were juicy and had strong flavor. It was sweet and savory. People who prefer heavier taste will love the char siew.

Their peanut lotus soup did surpass my expectation. Came with lotus slice, chicken feet and lots of peanuts. This clear soup had strong flavor of peanut, tasted super fresh, the lotus was being simmered perfectly, and the texture was soft and easy to chew on. It was indeed a bowl of comforting soup to go with your lunch.
