Surrounded by Sentul, Kepong, and Mont Kiara areas, Segambut is a small town with lots of factories, especially car workshops. However, you would be surprised that many classic and fantastic foods are actually hidden in this area. Most of the restaurants are only open during lunch hours, as they mainly cater to lunch crowd from nearby offices.

1. Segambut Chicken Rice

Selected by OpenRice as one of the top 10 fried chicken in Klang Valley, this famous restaurant specializing in fried chicken rice is tucked away at a factory area in Segambut. It has been around for more than 50 years, and it is now operated by the second generation. Different parts of fried chicken are available here, including whole leg, drumstick, thigh and wings. Freshly deep-fried in the kitchen, the fried chicken here is so crispy and juicy that you wouldn’t mind having it every day!

2. Kim Poh Claypot Chicken Rice

Tucked away at a factory area in Segambut, Kim Poh is one of the oldest Claypot Chicken Rice restaurants in KL with more than 30 years of history. Upon arriving at the restaurant, you will see the restaurant owner’s son, who is always busy preparing the claypot chicken rice with charcoal fire. He insists on cooking each claypot chicken rice single-handedly by himself to ensure the quality is good and consistent. The place can be quite packed during lunch hours. While waiting for the dish to arrive, you can warm your palate with some nourishing steamed herbal soups.

3. Yu Ai Seafood Noodles

Yu Ai in Segambut is so famous that its name has become synonymous with seafood noodles. Most customers prefer to dine at the open-aired dining place at the back of the restaurant, because the place is shaded by big trees, which is a lot more cooling than the indoor dining area. Priced at RM20 a bowl, Yu Ai’s signature seafood noodles are served in large portion with lots of fresh seafood ingredients, including big prawns, mussels, clams, salmon fish and sotong. 3 different soup bases are offered here, including curry, tom yam, and clear soup, to suit different taste-buds.

4. Joe Wong Bak Kut Teh

Located beside a Chinese temple at Jalan Segambut Tepi, Joe Wong Bak Kut Teh is a “dai chao” restaurant that is very popular among the locals. Many patrons come here for Joe Wong’s 3 Treasures, including Three Cup Chicken, Stir-fried Sinew, and Stir-fried Tilapia Fish Head. The Three Cup Chicken is stir-fried in Malaysian style with three cup sauce until the sauce is dry, thick, and fragrant without adding any basil leaves to suit local taste-buds. Stir-fried Sinew is another specialty dish prepared using soft and chewy pork sinew. The taste is spicy and fragrant with sufficient “wok hei”!

5. Xan Ling Home-Cooked Dishes

Hidden in a secluded place in Segambut, Xan Ling offers a wide variety of mouth-watering home-cooked dishes. Most of the dishes here are served with a claypot, including their signature Prawn Noodles and Shenggu Porridge. The Claypot Prawn Noodles are freshly prepared to order using homemade noodles, which are very smooth and slippery when cooked. The soup is very tasty too, as it is cooked with lots of prawns and pork slices. Apart from claypot dishes, the restaurant’s Braised Spare Ribs and Braised Chicken Feet are also very popular.

6. Ipoh Road Yong Tow Foo

The well-known Ipoh Road Yong Tow Foo at an old bungalow in Segambut has recently relocated to the 6th floor of Cairnhill Hotel, not far from the old shop. The new shop has air-conditioning, and it is a lot more spacious than the old shop. It can accommodate up to 200 people comfortably, yet the price of the food remains the same as before. New and old customers can now enjoy their favorite handmade Yong Tau Foo with thick soup in a more comfortable setting.

7. Hoi Kee Nasi Lemak

Looking for traditional Nasi Lemak with a porky twist? Head to this stall located at Hoi Kee Coffee Shop. This old stall has been around for nearly 60 years. It is now managed by the second generation. The sambal chili sauce is prepared by the stall owners themselves using high-quality chili paste twice a week to make sure the sambal is fresh and of highest quality. What’s special about their Nasi Lemak is that it is served with spinach, and customers can choose to add Hakka Stewed Pork Belly or Curry Chicken to make the Nasi Lemak more tantalizing!

8. Hoi Kee Pan Mee

Located at the same kopitiam as the Nasi Lemak stall, this Pan Mee stall has operated for more than 30 years. The stall doesn’t have a sign showing that it is selling Pan Mee, but most of the locals know that they offer one of the best Pan Mee in town. All Pan Mee here is freshly prepared with pork slices, minced meat, ikan bilis, vegetable and fried fu chok when an order is placed. Enjoy the delicious Pan Mee with clear yet flavorful soup boiled using ikan bilis.

9. Hor Poh Lui Cha

Located at Sri Sinar, Hor Poh is the one and only Hakka Restaurant in Segambut. This restaurant has been around for 16 years. Even Japanese and Korean tourists like to visit this place for their signature Lui Cha. Originated from the Hor Poh Village in China, Lui Cha is well-known to be a healthy and fiber-rich dish combining various types of vegetables. The Lui Cha here is served with 6 bowls of separate ingredients, a bowl of tea soup, and a bowl of rice. Add all the ingredients into the rice and pour the tea soup over the rice to enjoy the special soup rice rich in tea and mint aroma.

10. Kah Hing Vietnamese Food

Not far from Hor Poh Restaurant you will find this popular Vietnamese restaurant by the name of Kah Hing. Most of the well-known Vietnamese street foods and snacks are available on the menu, including Vietnamese Coffee, Braised Trotters Noodles, and Vietnamese Spring Rolls. The Vietnamese Coffee is served in the authentic way with a coffee filter placed on top of a glass. Wait for about 10 minutes for the thick and fragrant coffee to drip into the glass. The signature Braised Trotters Noodles is slippery rice noodles topped with big pieces of braised pork trotters and braised egg. The trotters are well-cooked with a soft and chewy texture.
