Halal Korean OK Jan 10, 2016

Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Seafood | Noodles

Dubu dubu. The only halal Korean restaurant to date which I've known of. Not too sure if there's any other pork free Korean place as pork serves as one of the major ingredient in Korean cuisine.

It was a Friday lunch and the queue was exceptionally long for all the restaurants. We finally decided to settle for this place as the table turnover was pretty fast. It took us 15 mins to get a seat which isn't too bad compared to the rest.

Of course we had their lunch set. About RM 16.9 which comes with a meal and ban chan. Sadly if you want a refillable side dish (ban chan) you will have to top up RM 2.30. Not a viable option considering the ban chan doesn't taste as good either. A very normal side dish with not much varieties.

I had the seafood ramyeon and it was burning hot and spicy. With every bite, my tongue was dipped in volcanic lava literally. The noodles wasn't cooked properly perhaps due to rush hour lunch, it was still hard but acceptable for me as I do not fancy soft and overlooked soggy noodles anyway. It comes with two prawns with some lalas as well. The broth was okay but the spiciness covers almost every other taste.

All in all, it wasn't too bad of an experience. Just a note though, never visit the Mid Valley branch as the quality of food was really horrible. The one in Nu Sentral definitely serve better food.

Dim Sum galore OK Jan 08, 2016
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Group/Family dining

It's dim sum time again! Always looking forward to it as it has been a family ritual for years on public holiday.

We are usually regular patrons of Grand Imperial Restaurant but this time, we decided to try the highly spoken of dim sum restaurant, the Ming Room which is located in the very same building Bangsar Shopping Complex on the very same floor. One at the newer building and Ming is tucked in the other corner of the older block. Both easily accessible via escalator.

It was 9.30 AM but they are not opened yet. Some patrons are seen standing outside the restaurant waiting for them to open. At 10 AM sharp, we walked in and we were informed that it is difficult for us to get a table unless there were reservation made. We were furious as we were there half an hour before it actually opens.

Thankfully they manage to find a table for us. Compared to Grand Imperial, they are rather small and too many partitions. Perhaps for wedding dinners, this might not be an ideal place after all.

So after hearing tons of good reviews about this place, we came with really high hopes and expectations but we were dissapointed. The minced meat in the dumplings were fresh, it was rather soggy and damp. The other dim sums like the fried Chee Cheong fun wasn't great either. Egg tarts was average but nothing great to shout about.

Compared to their branches under the same group, we think that Maju Palace fare better in terms of good quality and taste wise even though it's a halal restaurant. Spacious as well.

Hello! Smile Jan 08, 2016

Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Noodles | Sweets/Snack

The name is so quirky and catchy that it catches our attention the other day. So we decided to drop by during one of the long weekends.

This restaurant is situated few doors away from the renowned cafe, Butter + Beans at Seventeen at Section 17. For those of you who are familiar with Food Foundry, it is just right behind it.

Since we were pretty early the other day probably about 6.30 PM, we did not make any reservations. But it was already full. The restaurant itself isn't big enough, probably 4-5 small tables and a long table which can cater to perhaps 10 pax.

We were told that we are allowed to dine but only up to 8.00 PM before the next reservation comes in.

So we had only one main dish and salad with drinks. For the drinks I had their special drink, watermelon juice and thyme. It was refreshing and the combination of thyme isn't too bad where the watermelon taste actually covers almost all of it.

As for the main dish we had the Kampung Boy fried rice. We were expecting nasi goreng kampung kinda fried rice but this was slightly different. It was served with fried nam yu chicken with some side vegetables. The fried rice itself was so fragrant perhaps with a little belacan or dried shrimp paste or maybe XO sauce as it tasted a little spicy yet really smells good. This has totally win our hearts. It wasn't too pricey either for the huge portion, approximately RM 15 or so. The salad was nothing great to shout about.

Will definitely revisit again.

Affordable Lunch Break Smile Jan 07, 2016

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Seafood | Ramen/Udon/Soba

It's been awhile since we dined in Zanmai. For those of you who is a regular patron of the said restaurant, I'm sure all of you would agree with me about the nerve wrecking long and unnecessary queue outside the restaurant.

We have always wonder why are they still a long queue despite a number of empty tables to be seen clearly from the outside of the place. Perhaps the management should look into it as table turnaround and waiting plays a major role in keeping your customer happy and to return to your restaurant.

That aside, the affordable Japanese food never fails to brighten up our day. The prices has gone upwards slightly but still manageable. For an approximately RM 20, you can have a decent individual rice and green tea.

Today I had the chicken karaage with rice. Basically it's the Japanese version of fried chicken, marinated in garlic and soy sauce as well as a whole lot of caramelized onion. Sounds appetizing, yes?

I had the small portion and it's enough to last me throughout the whole day. A hint for those who opt for the large portion though, it is highly advisable to order the small one plus other plate of sushi. This is because of the ridiculous top up amount that you have to pay plus the bigger portion tends to make you feel unpleasantly full of the same type of food.

I would rather pay for something different of the same price. All in all, we had a pleasant lunch, as always.

Local Delights Cry Jan 06, 2016

Categories : Malay | Stall / Warung

This is always our to go place for lunch whenever we run of ideas. Typical dilemma each and everyone of us faces almost everyday. 'What are we having for lunch?' And the answer will be 'I've no idea'.

This place is always crowded and packed with people. Despite its small area, it is located in front of the sushi shop at the lowest floor, the table turnaround time is usually quite fast. Perfect for working adults who only have one hour lunch break. It is also easily accessible via train. Just take the putra lrt and alight at KLCC station.

Instead of their famous nasi lemak ayam berempah that I usually order, today I've decided to try something new instead. Roti Jala with Curry Chicken. Huge disappointment.

The minute the food was served, it looks really bad. The roti jala was so soggy and oily and the curry chicken looks more like a diluted tomato chicken.

One bite and we have decided to not ever order this dish again. The curry chicken tasted sweet instead of spicy and it was really bland. Not a slight hint of curry in it. The roti jala was so soggy and soft. A major turnoff and it cost me RM11.5 before gst. It would be better off to pay extra 2 bucks for a decent nasi lemak ayam berempah instead.

Lessons learnt. Better to just opt for their signature nasi lemak the next time we visit again.
