Stalls that served porridge are commonly seen at food courts around Kuching, simply because one can eat it as breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Besides, this all-seasons delicacy are favoured by the Kuching folks, in which it quench the tired appetite during the hot day, and warm the stomach during the rainy, or merely give the tummy a break after overloading so much other food.

Ah Seng Porridge that located at the Premier Food Junction, Icom Square has offered this RM6 fish porridge with the fish fillet visible at the first sight when the bowl is put on the table. It’s a habitual step that the porridge is being fed first before stirring in the other condiments. Satisfying, the porridge tasted great, can even eat it on its own. Therefore, the spring onion, fried garlic and salted black bean pickle are just right to enhance the overall taste without stealing the sheen of the porridge. The fish fillet is fresh, and all the ingredients have blended this Ah Seng Porridge into a simple-yet-perfect lunch hour. Will definitely go back to the stall to try other porridge variety.

I like the honesty demonstrated by the stall owner, in which I received my food appearing as identical as the image shown at the stall. Yet the taste and quality of the food ingredients have to be improved. First, the kolo Lao Shu Fen (silver needle noodles) is very oily, most probably due to the not well-trained worker who is inattentive to the measurement of the oil and sauce added to the noodles. Then, the fried yellow colour and white colour fish balls tasted flourier than the fish flavour.

Then, the fried yellow colour and white colour fish balls tasted flourier than the fish flavour. Luckily the fish cakes tasted quite well. Due to personal preferences, when comes to ‘kolo’, I expect the soy sauce to be in the picture without any spicy taste, but this one turns out like the chilli sauce has added in the soy sauce in giving taste to the noodles. All in all, this RM6 has not geared to a satisfying bowl.
