It was my birthday weekend and Becks brought me to celebrate my birthday at Rama V. I've never been here and its my 1st time i realize there is fine Thai cuisine in KL. We were running late already, you know girls, i just dono wat to wear on my birthday=) I i only knew very last min, it's a lunch, n not celebrating during dinner. So when we reach there, Becks told the table was reserved under Jane, my name=) You know the weird thing, the waitress reply, " yes, they are already here." I'm like, "who is already here?" Without getting much time to digest the thought in my mind, i was surprised by 2 of y best friends, xiao mei and ade!

i was shock at the same time happy for them to keep it a secret from me=) Since today it was a treat from them, i let them order. I was happily chatting with my babe Xiao Mei.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is very elegant but simple. With a modern taste with a little touch of Thai decorations. There is a pond just outside of the restaurant and a few private rooms for more private dinners. It is packed on a sunday afternoon, and i heard its already fully bonked for sat and sun's dinner.

The 1st dish is the appetizer Chor Ladda. It is Flower Shaped Dumplings Stuffed with Minced Chicken and Peanut. This is a chef recommended dish. The flower shape dumpling is so pretty i barely wana eat it=) The skin of the dumpling is just nice, not too thick nor too thin. It tasted sweet and you can feel the crunchy peanuts and also the taste of fried shallots in it. I dun quite like this dish because i don't eat fried shallots, but my friends love it.

We ordered this fish dish named Pla Dang Sam Rod, Fried fillet Red snapper fish served with 3 taste Chilli sauce. The fish is fried till crispy perfection add on with the sweet and spicy sauce. Yums! Great for fish lovers.

We ordered 2 Tom Yam Kai Reu Kung Reu Talay, Its basically clear tomyam soup, with choice of seafood, chicken or just prawns. We ordered the seafood one. This soup is clear but it has an unsuspected taste to it. Very spicy, sour and flavorful. Totally mouth watering.

We also ordered Gaeng Kaew Wan Nuer reu Kai Reu Kung, basically means Green curry.
There is a choice of chicken, beef, prawns and venison. We ordered the chicken one. The curry is thick with the coconut milk aroma. Spicy and milky at the same time. Quite a big portion with a lot of lean chicken meat.

We also ordered this, the only dish that is not spicy, Pad Pak Benjarong. It is simply fried mixed vegetable with shrimp, chicken and squid. Simple and nice, great to eat with white rice.

Last it would be dessert time. Tab tim krob, Red Rubies with Jackfruit in Coconut Milk this is a famous Thai dessert that my mum would used to make. For this dessert it is a bit disappointment as it is quite tasteless. We only can taste the coconut milk, but it is not sweet for a dessert.

The fillings were minced chicken which tasted salty-sweet and when mixed with the chopped peanuts filling, it was such a fantastic combination. The texture of the dumpling skin together with the minced meat was so chewy that I can't decide whether it was the meat or the peanuts or the skin that was better. The skin which are made from sago pearls are dyed blue and pinched into lovely flower shapes. Everything just complements together so well. Truly an unforgettable appetizer that I will want to return to try again.

The idea of stuffing things into chicken wing is just bewildering. How on earth do you do that? At Rama V, you will get the chance to try out their stuffed chicken wings, however it was not exciting as it sounds. Though it was fried to crispiness, it was still mild in terms of flavor. Chunky fillings but again, mild but peppery. The chicken wings were very soft and quite filling though.

When I was young, I rarely had asparagus. According to mommy, it is expensive. So let's eat expensive vegetable, shall we? The style of cooking gave me the idea that it would taste like the Chinese tai chao style and I was right about it. The asparagus was cooked to the right extent so as to retain the crunchiness. The garlic did enhance the natural sweetness in asparagus. Good to go with rice and curry!

A dessert, shall we? This is one of the selection of the weekend brunch buffet menu. Personally I find it rather interesting, so I decided to give it a try but I was disappointed. First of all, the chandol was frozen, which might be by intention, however I liked my chandol soft. The sticky rice was alright. Somehow I liked my previous dessert, the candied banana in coconut milk more. This was alittle too diluted to my liking.

I like banana and I like coconut milk. Filling, fragrant, sweet but a little savory, all these things appeal to me when I saw this dessert on the menu. The candied banana was expectedly sweet and hot, while the coconut milk was slightly chilled. I love the hot and cold combination and to make it more enjoyable, make sure you mix sufficient coconut milk with a candied banana in every scoop.

It is something new to me that you cook duck with curry. It is even unpredictable that you cook lychee with curry. Guess what, it worked perfectly at Rama V! Perhaps this was the best curry I had this year. Duck itself was quite a challenge as it tastes game most of the time. however in this dish, it was almost inexistent. The curry was lovely, sweetened by the natural sweetness of lychee. I love this, and it must go with rice!

Snapper fish is considered a rather expensive fish for its texture is known to be smooth and flaky. So when we saw fillet red snapper, we just pointed our fingers to that. Served hot, this fillet red snapper was very crispy on the outside, soft and smooth in the inside. Syiokness giler! Paired with the 3 taste chili sauce, it soaked up the outer layer of the batter to a little soggy, and gave it more exciting flavour.

I understand that this is a salad and not a fish dish, however I had a serious problem here. Where was my fish? I picked the biggest piece, hoping that there would be some treasure hidden but I was disappointed to the max. It wasn't just me, my friend also told me the same thing. However the crispy batter was prevalent and tasted like mixture of coconut flakes with batter.

Instead of white rice, we opted for Rama V Thai Style Fried Rice. First of all, the prawns were really huge and fresh. For a big prawn lover like me, I was most delighted to have them all to myself. However, the fried rice was a little wet to my liking. I like my fried rice dry and eggy. The rice wasn't fluffy due to the wetness and thus less enjoyable than Chinese style fried rice.

Gaeng Ka Ree Kai is chicken in yellowy curry with sweet potato. The dish is served in a claypot. The curry was is not the usual curry that we tasted as it was more of sweet in taste than spicy. The spices used blends very well with the generous amount of chicken, onion and sweet potatoes in the dish, thus making it very fragrant. I love this dish so much that I can finish up the whole dish just by itself.

It was recommended by my friends that I need to try this dish if I ever come to Rama V. from the looks of the dish; it looks like similar to the Chinese style fried rice. The fried rice was very fragrant and flavorful to taste. The prawns given were not only large in size but also tasted fresh and succulent. The downside of this dish for me is the generous amount of spring onions. Luckily, somehow the fragrant of the fried rice managed to cover up the overwhelming smell of spring onion.

Mango salad is a must appetizer in any Thai restaurant. Be it as a stand alone dish or accompanying ingredient. The serving was quite large and consists of finely sliced raw mango and generous servings of finely chopped peanuts. For me, the dish was too spicy for my liking. The looks of the dish was redder than usual due to the excessive chilli flakes. They did say it was SPICY mango salad.

The display of the dish looks more like a table deco than a dish. The Mieng Kam comes with Kaduk leaves, sweet paste, peanuts, chopped red onions, chopped garlic, dried coconut flakes, lime, cili padi and dried shrimp. Using the large Kaduk leave to wrapped all the ingrents and is eaten. It is the best appetizer as it makes one want to eat more. However, I do wish they would gives us more Kaduk leaves as they were much leftovers of the ingredients.

This is one dish that cannot be judge by its looks. The chewy outer yam layeR goes well with the fillings of slightly sweet minced chicken with finely chopped peanuts. Anyone who wanted to try something different should order this for a try
