Finally I got the chance to try Uncle Jang!! A lot of my friends have been telling me how delicious and how spicy the noodles are and since I love spicy food, I finally set my mind to try it out! I went there with my cousins and we ordered 9 portions of Dak-Galbi which was their spicy noodles. Dak-Galbi consists of noodles with stir fried marinated chicken chop in a chilli pepper paste based sauce, cabbages, sweet potatoes and rice cakes served together on a huge hot plate. The one ingredient that makes people go crazy about their noodles is the chilli pepper paste which is known as gochujang in Korean. One portion of the Dak-Galbi costs RM 19 and to me, I think it is quite pricey. Despite the huge portion, the ingredients are actually very simple and cheap and thus I think it is overpriced. However, I must say I really enjoy the spicy noodles, but it fills up my tummy very easily because the noodles were too much. Uncle Jang is worth a shot but I would consider twice to go there because I’m paying so much to eat “instant noodles” on a hot plate with a few diced chicken and cabbage. continue reading

Uncle Jang! Finally I'am here! The environment is quite nice and clean. The workers are very friendly too. There are many choices of dishes on their menu, you may scroll down to search for the menu lists. The price is reasonable and affordable. Some people will think that it is just a normal maggie mee but this is the specialty of korean food, the taste of the dishes are incredible nice. I would recommend you to try on their Kimchi (free flow), you can eat as much as you can for this as it is free of charge. This is the most delicious Kimchi which I ever tried before. continue reading

Whether you have heard of it, tried on it or totally not heard or try on it at all, but Uncle Jang does offer another delicious experience in Korean cuisine. It is no longer a new icon in town but surely a place that serves food you should give it a try.The uniqueness of Uncle Jang lies in the one signature dish they serve, i.e. Dak Galbi! It is a popular Korean dish made by stir-frying cabbage, sweet potato, tteok (rice cake) and marinated sliced chicken in gonchujang (chilli pepper paste) based sauce on a hot plate. In Uncle Jang, you can opt for normal or spicy Dak Galbi, and with some top-up you get to add on ramen, udon, mushroom, cheese, sweet potato, rice cake, fried rice or chicken in the stir-fried dish. You are required to order a minimum of 2 portion Dak Galbi with each portion of normal and spicy flavour costs RM 19 and RM 22, respectively, and that makes a minimum spending of RM 38+. The add-on costs from RM 6 to RM 19. If you are not bold enough for the spicy food, you can always opt for pork bulgogi at RM 22 or samgye tang (ginseng chicken soup) at RM 19.The sliced chicken was tender, the cabbage was cooked to slightly softer and the rice cake was just so yummy. And we were glad we ordered the udon as the 2 portion of Dak Galbi seem slightly small for a couple. So, if you were to go in a group of men, you might want to order slightly more depending on your appetite. You do feel like having fried kuey tiao at some point but the secret recipe of the sauce has made the taste somewhat more delicious. It does not taste even close to Kimchi as it is not sour, but something you should really give it a try. continue reading

My friend asked me what I felt like eating. I said, Korean Food, thinking of that trip to Korea that I missed. I felt I must have some Korean food to compensate the country I missed. I have visited Seoul and rural Korea long time ago when I was a considerably chubby 12-year-old but since it was a tour, we had normal food, not really street food and not the food that we see on Korean dramas. Anyway, when my friend said that the restaurant he is bringing me to is called, "Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant," it sounded so Malaysian and so kopitiam, so I hesitated and said, "Are you sure it is authentic? Maybe the rice is made from Thailand or Malaysia?" I am kind of the person who is pessimistic because I have learnt that it is too disappointing to have high expectations in life. Perhaps I was prejudiced, even more so when I reached the place and saw it looking like a kopitiam, the place teeming with people, so crowded, looking like a mamak place with smoke all over originating from each table. There were migrant workers everywhere but the odour of food is incredible. At first, I wanted to order Spicy Dak-Galbi but the Korean owner (I think) warned me that it would be too spicy. My friend could not stand too much spice so in the end we compromised by ordering a mix of Normal and Spicy Dak-Galbi. This dish is a famous dish in a rural part of Korea and later was made popular. It is a simple dish of stir-fried (or shall we call it Teppan-yaki?) chicken drumstick, cabbage (which was said to be very healthy), Korean rice cake, sweet potato and also special Dak-Galbi sauce. We added ramen in for RM 6 (another choice was udon for RM 8) in order to make it filling. It cost RM 19 per person for Normal whereas the Spicy one cost RM 22.There was a waiter helping us to fry the food. The smoke emitting from the big round pan was a bit too much for my tender and fragile eyes and body and I was coughing all the way. No wonder every table had a bottle of water with steel cups (like Indian cups) which my friend finished by the end of the dinner. There was just simple kimchi as appetizer with a Korean soya sauce with onions. When my tongue tasted the spice and my mouth munched the Korean Dak-Galbi, it felt like I was eating at the Korean street. The chicken was so tender that I finished every bit of it. Though the combination was simple, the cooking skill and the food were amazing! As was my habit, I praised the chef/owner when we paid at the counter! Definitely coming back with my parents! continue reading

Uncle Jang, a name that is gaining popularity in the F&B industry What makes this restaurant so popular? Well, they specialize in this dish called...Dak-Galbi! It is a popular South Korean dish where marinated chicken cubes are stir fried in a go chu jang (chili pepper paste) sauce together with cabbage, sweet potato, scallions, onions and tteok (rice cake) on a hot plate. Dak Galbi originates from Chuncheon, Gangwan Province. You can choose to order either spicy or the non-spicy version. Please take not that the spicy portion is EXTREMELY SPICY. Even a spicy food lover like me couldn't take it ! We ended up ordering 100 plus (RM2) to relief the spiciness lol! During my first visit two months ago, we wanted to order a 1:1 ratio of non-spicy to spicy but their spicy sauce is sold out =[ So I was pretty keen on ordering the spicy one this time =] . We ordered 2 portion of non-spicy(RM19) and 1 portion of spicy (RM22). You can choose to add-on various dishes (sari) such as sweet potato, ramen or fried ricePlease be vary that the portion Uncle Jang serves is very huge. 2 portion is enough for 3 moderate eater. Once you placed your order, we were served with complementary condiments and side-dishes such as kimchi and cabbage to be served with your Dak-GalbiWe were also give a bottle of water, FOC. And it is refillable so no worries =DThis is my favourite- Tteok (Rice Cake). I really love the Q and chewy texture of it =) Dak Galbi is currently my favourite Korean cuisine. The whole dish was really well marinated (as of all the stiring and mixing). Each bite was packed with flavour. The chicken Uncle Jang uses is chicken thigh, hence it was really tender and smooth. I loved the dish the most when we were about to finish it at the end, because the ramen will fully absorb the flavour at then and the cabbage would be really soft and tender. And best of all, the dish won't get cold thanks to the hot plate ;) The only problem that Uncle Jang has to work on is the poor ventilation. I almost use up the whole box of tissue (I have very sensitive nose) and it was really suffocating when the Dak-Galbi was being cooked. continue reading
