说实在的我真的没试过类似日本“鸡” 只料理。日前碰巧得到Openrice的邀约,才有机会到来这家 鶏鬨Yakitori Toridoki

momo (もも), chicken thigh
"negima" (ねぎま), chicken and spring onion
tsukune (つくね), chicken meatballs
(tori)kawa ((とり)かわ), chicken skin, grilled until crispy
tebasaki (手羽先), chicken wing
bonjiri (ぼんじり), chicken tail
shiro (シロ), chicken small intestines
nankotsu (なんこつ), chicken cartilage
hāto / hatsu (ハート / ハツ) or kokoro (こころ), chicken heart
rebā (レバー), liver
sunagimo (砂肝) or zuri (ずり), chicken gizzard
toriniku (鶏肉), all white meat on skewer
yotsumi (四つ身), pieces of chicken breast

Yakitori Toridoki

How’s the food? As much as I enjoyed the hospitality, environment and design, I was impressed by the food served as well. As mentioned, all ingredients are freshly prepared in day-to-day basis, not some frozen stocks. That’s why the freshness, texture and taste was preserved originally for us to consume. Now, let’s look at the food.

Here comes the chicken parts, start with the wings. As normal as it may look, these wings actually taste good. I believe these deep fried chicken wings were topped with Teriyaki sauce because it tasted sweet. Crispy from outside but yet tender inside.

Yakitori - Toridoki RM8, Negima RM5,Tsukune RM11

3 type of grilled chicken in one plate.

Toridoki is make form Mune (Chicken breast), Kawa (Chicken Skin) and Momo (Chicken Thight). The chicken is so juicy and soft. For those which BBQ, make sure you order this! You will never regret for trying this! Beside chicken, vege is inserted between the chicken so that you won't feel so oily and feel so fresh with every bite of it!

Negima is grilled chicken thight.

Tsukune is the combination of Mune (Chicken breast), and sunagimo (chicken gizzard).

You will never get enough of this, trust me! They will help you to cut into small pieces before they you are ask to eat. You may eat the chicken with 3 different type of sauce. First dish for the night was Konsai Salad (root's vegetable's salad). The salad is made of Japanese root vegetables, covered with mayonnaise and then grated with parmesan cheese. Yes, that's one huge cheese there.

Then comes Nagaimo Garlic Butter (Japanese yam with garlic and butter). Personally, it's one of the least favourite dishes from Toridoki. For one, I think it's too oily. Although it's fragrant, the overall taste leaves me wanting more - don't really have much taste and I think adding more garlic would fix that. Perhaps Toridoki was hesitant in putting more garlic because not everyone likes the taste of garlic.

Next in line is the Teba Age (deep fried chicken wing). One of my personal favourites at Toridoki. Everybody loves deep fried chicken wings right? Crispy and fragrant with the right amount of marination to give you tasty and uber crispy wings.

Taking a break from the crispy fried wings, next was the Sunagimo Ahijyo (chicken gizzard and 8 kinds of vegetables served in hot plate with french loaf). Honestly I didn't find this dish very special taste-wise.

Back to chicken. One of the main stars in Toridoki is Maruyaki (grilled whole chicken). The size of the chicken is smaller than the regular chicken, but take my word for it that the portion is sufficient if you've ordered other dishes as well.

Three condiments will be provided for the grilled whole chicken. It's marinated but I think not long enough for the marination to be absorbed into the chicken flesh so the condiments add more taste to the chicken. Oh ya, the skin is super crispy!

Toridoki boasts of making fresh tamago, and it's hot when served. Honestly I love it but RM14 seems a little overpriced for me. Also, I realised I didn't take a picture of the Toridoki logo stamped on the tamago from the right point of view and I tried rotating the picture but it doesn't make sense due to the angle and framing of the original photograph.

Matsu Ni - soup with chicken innards and tofu. That round thing in the middle is chicken ovary, not fishball or meatball. Can't bear to eat such thing (I don't take innards) but people on my table were telling me it tastes like egg. I didn't take anything else from the pot except to try the soup, which was quite good.

Alright, here comes the other stars from Toridoki, the yakitoris (skewered chicken):

Another dish we tried that night was Cheese Yaki Onigiri (camember cheese with grilled rice ball). I actually prefer if the rice ball is not grilled (I like onigiri that way) but overall this onigiri is very pleasant to have. Cheese is not too much so it won't make you jelak.

Another dish I really like for the night was not chicken but the Houjicha pudding because I'm a sucker for desserts it's something different, a special kind of dessert made from Japanese green tea. Uber fragrant and a great ending to a meal with lotsa chicken.

Overall, I think Toridoki really thrives in making good yakitori. Be sure to try the Houjicha pudding! Price is rather steep here though but seeing that it is Desa Sri Hartamas, you can be sure that's the average price for food around the area.

Just a word of caution, I think everyone will already know that Desa Sri Hartamas area is infamous for its parking. So... yes, be prepared to go around finding for parking - it took me almost 20 minutes to find a parking spot.

Rating:

Food: 6/10

Service: 6.5/10

Value: 5/10

Atmosphere: 6.5/10 (I was seated at the far corner of the restaurant (tatami mats woohoo!) and that spot was good enough to prevent me from smelling like smoke when I left)

At Tori Doki, customers can experience an authentic Japanese dining experience - I was greeted by the staffs Japanese style, with energetic shouts from the kitchen crew and a polite bow followed by "Irrasshaimase" (Welcome! In Japanese) by the kimono-clads server. Patrons can choose to dine in at the bar area, or the traditional tatami seating

Once you're seated , you'll be handed a cold wet towel & a FOC appetizer! How great is that

Deep fried chicken wings marinated with soy sauce.

Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside! I loved how well-flavoured the chicken wings were! Savoury with a slightly sweet touch, with a lovely crunchy texture.

From top: Toridoki RM8, Negima RM5 and Tsukune RM11

My favourite would be the Tori Doki: Tori Doki's signature yakitori. Chicken breast wrapped with chicken thigh, grilled till perfection. Juicy, tender with an irresistible smoky BBQ taste. Contrary to popular beliefs that breast meat tends to have a drier texture, the Tori Doki was surprisingly really tender & juicy.

The Tsukune (meatball) is made by blending different parts of chicken meat and marinating with sweet sauce. Negima features grilled chicken thigh & leek. The yakitori were all executed very well, probably one of the best yakitoris in town!

Another signature dish in Tori Doki - The chicken was so tender & flavourful I could just eat it on its own without any condiments! Do allow 45 minutes to 1 hour cooking time. Fret not, as you can drop them a call in advance to reduce your wait time.

Cheese Yaki Onigiri RM12

Grilled Oigiri (Rice Balls) stuffed with Camembert cheese. Topped with generous amount of cheese powder & bonito flakes. Imagine sinking your teeth into the slightly crisps crust of the grilled rice ball, infused with savoury soy sauce, then fluffy layer of rice & creamy, hot melted Camembert cheese. Mhhhhmmmm

Alternatively, you can opt for the regular Yaki Onigiri for RM10.

Houjicha Pudding RM10

A refreshing dessert that is not too heavy on the palate, not too sweet nor cloying, with a hint of aromatic houjicha taste to balance it off. Yum!

Verdict: Really good yakitori & unconventional Japanese dishes! Service was top notch and the atmosphere was pleasant too

Give a try on their Yakitori. The portion actually is big and I not kidding. The first one is Tsukune (RM 11) is a minced chicken breast with gizzard , Negima (RM5) is chicken breast and Japanese leek and Toridoki (RM 8) is chicken breast and thigh. Which one is my favourite? My answer will be Tsukune.

My stomach is so full but I still want try more. Tadaaaaa, introduce to you Dashimaki Tamago (RM14) . One bite of the Tamago, I can feel the softness of the skin and it really different from other Japanese restaurant that we eat. Is so amazing that the Tamago make from thin layer egg crepe and it does not come with rice like what we eat at other Japanese restaurant. Must try this. The second dish is Cheese Yaki Onigiri (RM12). The texture of the rice ball is crunchy from outside but the inside texture is soft with camembert cheese.

I for one, have been scouring Sri Hartamas for food and have tried some of the eateries here like Dirty Duck Naughty Babe, the Italian pizza place and another tasty Japanese place. Today, I find myself here in Toridoki, a Japanese franchise from Tokyo, that is a 4-months’ old baby. In Tokyo, there are already 3 branches. I was curious why Malaysia became the first Southeast Asia branch and Kuta Fusuya, the Manager in Toridoki, said that, perhaps there are many races in Malaysia. Kuta has been living in Malaysia for 4 years before becoming the manager here. They have hired a popular local chef, Joe who has made a name for himself in local Japanese restaurants since 1981, that would mean, many years before I was born! I felt compelled to praise the manager who is so systematic to have given us a printed menu for the first time, something rarely done by most restaurants. The food also came out one by one according to the recommended menu. The menu is changed every few months.

We can choose to sit on normal dining table, counter table or tatami mats right at the back without folding the legs (good news for people who cramp easily like me).

The Chinese name of Toridoki contains the word “chi” (chicken) because this restaurant’s USP lies in chicken. The signature dishes are Yakitori (Japanese grilled chicken satay) and also roasted whole chicken. The official logo is a chicken too.The Yakitori is done using different parts of the chicken such as chicken breast, gizzard, thigh, wings, liver and every edible part of chicken.

Potato Salad

Any order would come with a complimentary appetizer of the day which is subject to change from salads to today’s Potato Salad. The potato salad is quite tasty as it is made from mashed potatoes in a scoop mixed with carrots, onions, and also purple cabbage. The best part is that there was no overload of mayonnaise, the spoiler of any Japanese meal.

Konsai Salad (RM 18)

Next was the Konsai Salad (RM 18) which is root vegetable salad. To me, it is less vegetable except for the cabbage but more on potatoes. Calling all potato lovers out there, this is so for you! It contains orange potato/sweet potato, purple potato, lotus root, pumpkin, broccolis and carrots. On top, is a generous squeeze of mayonnaise on a bowl of carbs. Kota actually helped to grate fresh cheese on the top so you can feel the freshness of everything made here. This dish is unique and please do not order rice due to the heaviness of potatoes.

Nagaimo Garlic Butter (Japanese yam with garlic and butter) (RM 12)

After this heavy meal, we moved to Nagaimo Garlic Butter (Japanese yam with garlic and butter) (RM 12). When I first saw the name, I was wondering whether I would be served just plain butter blended with garlic which was a little silly of me! It turned out to be crispy yam made with Nagaimo Garlic Butter that is pan-fried mountain yam mixed with garlic powder, soya sauce and black pepper. The garlic makes it fragrant. Since I am on a diet and too health conscious, I refrained from eating too much of this. To me, it was nice to dip this in the sweet Toridoki sauce. Later, I had a second bite and felt it tasted a little like radish.

Teba Age (RM 10) Deep Fried Chicken Wing

No one dine in a chicken-based restaurant without trying the fried chicken which to me, is better than KFC. Kota told me this is KFC. So here comes the Teba Age (RM 10) Deep Fried Chicken Wing which is very crispy and fragrant. In fact, it was so crispy that one can easily break off the chicken wing. It was marinated with Japanese soy-based sauce and also Japanese pepper. Like most Japanese style, there is not much sauce. In fact, the Japanese prefers to have yakitori marinated with sea salt and do not like much sauce. I guess I am the only one who likes my food laden with a lot of sauce.

Sunagimo Ahijyo (RM 18)

Then, comes my favourite dish – Sunagimo Ahijyo (RM 18) which is special as it contains chicken gizzard with 8 kind of vegetables including garlic slices and black pepper. It is served in a hot plate with crispy thin French loaf at the side for dipping in the olive oil. It is meant to be oily to match with sake.

Maruyaki (RM 45)
After that, comes the famous dish of Maruyaki – grilled whole chicken (RM 45). It takes 1 full day of margination of 1 whole chicken with red wine and Bamboo salt because Bamboo Salt is less salty and healthy. We need to order in advance, minimum cooking time of 45 minutes. There is a special grilling machine with special glass to absorb the heat. It takes 1 hour of grilling with 6 burners on top and bottom of the place. The chicken is very fresh as it is ‘daily chicken’ (meaning it comes into the shop daily from the market) and is just below 1 kg, hence the small size. I almost got fooled as I mistaken it for a roasted bird! 3 types of sauces are served together that are Rock Salt, Gara Tare (Japanese spicy spice) and Ponzu (Japanese citron sauce with soya sauce and lemon). The result? The chicken has crispy skin on the outside, akin to Peking Duck and juicy meat on the inside. I felt that it was a little dry for my liking and would have done better with more moisture inside.

Yakitori-Tsukune (RM 11)
Yakitori is marinated using rock salt and pepper. The different parts of the chicken is grilled using sweet sauce till medium cooked then sweet sauce is added again. I prefer the yakitori than the maruyaki which is drier and less succulent.
Tsukune is my favourite chicken dish here because of its unique combination of chicken thigh, soft bone, chicken breast meat, onion and Japanese perilly leaves (ohba).

Yakitori – Toridoki (RM 8)

Toridoki contains chicken thigh wrapped in chicken skin, chicken breast wrapped in chicken skin and a repeat of these. To me, I will still go for Toridoki as I dislike chicken breast.
Tamago (RM 14)
My friend, Ru Xyn was so eager to eat Tamago so finally we ordered this. Compared to the tamago I am used to see in Korea. They are usually cold but to my pleasant surprise, this Tamago is served hot with smoke coming out. It is made fresh whenever customers order it.

Cheese Yaki Onigiri (RM 12)
This is actually camembert cheese with grilled rice balls. Frankly, I am not a big fan of rice in big amount so onigiri is small enough with less than the normal amount of rice, of so I believe. There is camembert cheese with very fine chicken slices in the middle of the onigiri. The garnishing is very beautiful whereby the 2 onigiri is arranged like a leave.

I was so full after eating onigiri that I told Kuta not to bring anymore onigiri. He said next dish is dessert and there is “surely extra stomach for dessert.” I chuckled.

Houjicha Pudding (RM 10) - order cancellation

This pudding is made from Houjicha (a certain part of the green tea). The Houjicha green tea leaves are boiled and strained and the juice is used to make the pudding. Gelatine and fresh cream is then added. Finally, caramel is added on top and burnt slightly. According to Chef Joe, Houjicha is good for the stomach as it cleanses it the way green tea does.

Chicken are marinated for 24 hours with salt, pepper, red wine, bamboo sauce and sesame oil before roasted for 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the chicken conditions. The chicken was tender and the meat fell apart from the bone very easily. It was served with spicy sauce, Himalaya Sea Salt and Japanese Soy sauce and the chicken tasted different when you dip them with different types of condiments. The chickens are only roasted once the customer placed their orders so it really took about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get our food. But don't worry; you can call them in advance to place your orders so that you no need to wait for the foods.
