Nasi putih with pucuk paku masak lemak, and ayam masak merah. The pucuk paku masak lemak was crunchy and coconutty, and the ayam masak merah filled in the gap with sweetness.Sirap bandung was huge and milky, and not overly sweet. Very refreshing. continue reading

I was pleasantly surprised with the food at Tumis! They have set menus, lunch quickies, a range of a'la carte items and we tried 3 of their dishes. The standout was their Daging Maut... A beef dish not unlike a beef rendang but done Kelantan style. It is called Daging Maut or 'Death Beef' due to the level of spiciness and that lingering and burning sensation in your stomach lining for hours after ingestion! For a more acceptable name, maybe I will call this dish 'Death by Beef' Eat at your own risk! The owner and chef of the restaurant Kak Yati came by to our table firstly warning us several times about the dish and then several times again to check that we have survived her extremely potent dish! The set lunch we had that featured this dish came with rice, a side salad and some keropok and to finish off a coffee jelly was served to help cool the palate. Oh and you get to choose a drink of rosé syrup or iced tea. All for just RM15! Will certainly be back again! continue reading

Not one of Solaris Dutamas' most prominent places, but this outlet run by Singaporean couple Rosli & Yani offers enough enticements for a visit or two.The menu comprises Malay & Indonesian specialties like this Javanese favorite, "nasi ambeng," rice accompanied by sotong sambal, serunding, egg, crackers & more. The rice set comes with ayam lemak cili padi, all for RM15. Satisfyingly flavorsome. The ominously named Daging Maut proved to be beef cooked in a black gravy with lime leaves. Surprisingly tender, but punishingly spicy.Murtabak Maggi, a treat for fans of instant noodles seeking more ways to savor their slurps. Fun to munch initially, though its doughy-starchy texture eventually left us longing for the meatiness of mamak murtabak.Paru, tempe & tahu, a triumphant triumvirate, expertly executed. And there's still much more here to order, from ayam penyet to ikan terutup.Something cold & santan-based, to finish on a fine, not-too-sugary note. Cold syrup & somewhat ineffectual Tongkat Ali iced tea. continue reading
