Guess my usual mundane Monday has been spiced up, with the addition of this snack for my tea time later tongue hehe. One of my colleagues who just got back from his hometown, brought us some of the local delicacies from Ipoh.

It’s the famous Heong Piah from Gunung Rapat. This delight has since now been commercialized and made into huge production with its more lively-colored easy pack, compared to those old times, where you would find 8-9 of the pastries in one big red plastic bag.

 

 
This original Heong Piah was charbroiled with the combination of multiple ingredients like wheat flour, sugar, maltose, vegetable oil, margarine, water, sesame, salt and onion. The texture is therefore crispy and light to the taste bud. It’s flaky as well with the sticky maltose paste in between. There is also a hint of sesame aroma which has been added to bring up the flavor of charcoal broiled biscuits.

I guess Heong Piah is quite synonym in our life especially to us, Chinese folks, where these pastries are usually bought as souvenirs. If literally translated, they meant fragrant pastries.

Although I don’t take Heong Piah as often as I do for Tau Sa Pia, I have heard of it all this while. Perhaps it’s just not my thing, hehe. Anyway, I still give it a try when my friend who happen to get back from Ipoh, got me this Yee Hup’s Heong Piah for a simple fare.

 
From the outside, it looks just like an ordinary biscuit. Just that it is slightly flattened balls, which is round in shape with some dashes of white sesame on the top. Then as you bite into the pastry, you feel a gluey filling. It can be sweet at times, but this by Yee Hup was still acceptable.

 
The filling is a little sticky, which is made from malt and shallots, which is then covered by a flaky baked crust and garnished with sesame seeds on the surface. Thus, the snacks as a whole, gives out an aromatic and crisp texture to the foodie.

 
Until today, Heong Piah remains popular with the Malaysian Chinese community, especially those hails from Northern Peninsular Malaysia like Ipoh, for instance. Tourists who happen to spend their getaway at the town would normally look for these bakeries as a momento for their friends, or just purely self-indulgence later ^^. And it’s quite easy to obtain as they are sold at most of the stores in town.

Although am a big fan of Tau Sa Piah, I normally only get to eat only those from Pearl of Orient. And they are purely with yellow beans or a.k.a. ‘tau sa’ fillings only. Seems pretty normal.

But once I tasted this Chicken Floss Puff by Yee Hup Enterprise from Ipoh, I think I can temporarily forgo the usual ubiquitous tau sa piah, hehe. The secret lies in the filling used by Yee Hup. In addition, the puffs were nicely packed in a perfect order.

 

 
After the first bite, am surprised as well as delighted to see there was chicken floss in it! It might seems contrary when it comes to such combination of opposing flavor; chicken floss for being salty whereas the tau sa filling is meant to be slight sweet. In addition, we usually only heard of sweet and sour dishes only right? tongue So this definitely is one of the innovative and fresh idea, at least to me tongue

The puff is soft and flaky on the outside with a tinge of crispiness. The layer is aromatic too as there are also some dashes of black sesame on it when baked. Come to the most interesting part was its filling. After the first bite, only I realized that a hint of saltiness and sweetness could be so wonderful, hehe. The fluffiness of the chicken floss together with the powdery tau sa filling, make such a humble delish snacks which is best enjoyed during a lazy afternoon. ^_^

Harold's Bread

Frankly speaking, I never expect to find such modern bakery in the middle of highway, while on the way heading to Penang. As the journey stopped for a short break, I get to explore more on this new bakery in town that seems offer a delectable array of cakes and puffs.

Harold's Bread is located at one corner nearby Agromall at Gopeng. It holds the cosy and casual atmosphere, just like any ordinary pastry shop in town. The beverage and confectionary look pretty decent and most delightfully, they do have cheese related recipe lol
