MANGO CHILI Smile Oct 23, 2015
Categories : Thai | Restaurant

Affordable and tasty authentic Thai foods with a kind aim of creating a platform to help the poor are what fueling the daily brisk business at Mango Chili that is located at Nexus Bangsar South Shopping Mall.

Apart from the daily F&B operations, the founder of this modern Thai case is also actively involved in CSR efforts –Food for Good project, where each meal will be provided free to a child in need for every meal they sell. In addition, certain amount gained from each business transaction would be contributed to underprivileged children communities such as Dignity For Children Foundation, Trinity Children’s Home, The Need to Feed the Need (kids@Chow Kit) and others, ensuring their tummy is also well taken care too, as well as hiring the poor and giving them skills and improving their standard of living. Such a noble act of the thoughtful entrepreneur.

Even the interior of the café is comfortably designed to be family-friendly with a vibrant corner for the kids to loom around safely at the mini playground.

The eatery is usually packed especially during the weekdays, so finding a table in the air-conditioned dining area might require some patience. But discouraged not as you are bound to be served attentively by the amicable and helpful team of Mango Chili.

So let’s get started on what’s instored for us by the bubbly and seasoned Chef Zul, shall
we?

THAI FISH CAKE (MYR 10.50)

Signature appetizer in almost Thai food serving restaurant. Each bite of the fish cake isa joyful and flavourful one.

BASIL CHICKEN SPRING ROLLS (MYR 10.50 -5PC)

Am rather thrilled to have tried the ubiquitous spring roll made interestingly with basil chicken meat fillings. Crispy on the outside but juicily soft in the inside. A simple delectable nosh that keeps you longing for more.

TOM YAM SEAFOOD (MYR 18.95)

Another iconic dish by our northern neighbor, seafood tomyam. Comes in light reddish soup, spicy sour soup that has been added with milk and deliciously filled up with assorted fresh seafood and meat that includes, scallops, squid, fish, chicken meat and et al. Goes well with a bowl of white rice.

DEEP FRIED FISH WITH TRIO SAUCE (MYR 42.30)

Sweet sour chilli, oyster sesame sauce and spicy seafood sauce to go with the deep fried seabass.

Truly one of the affordable and scrumptious fish dishes in town served lavishly with a crispy, soft fish meat, drenched in a very appetizing condiments that got us hooked on for more. Without realizing, am already harnessing the thought of ordering 1 whole plate for myself the next round of my return (=GRA POW CHICKEN WITH FRIED EGG (MYR 13.65)

Stir-fried chicken with Thai hot basil leaves.

One of the not-so-common Thai food that I usually have, but am really a true buff of basil herbs, so this particular dish does warm the cockles of my heart fondly. Each chicken bites are juicy and tender, coupled with loads of bounteous basil leaves that further add fragrance to the over all dish. Not too salty but dished up aromatically with just the right ‘wok hei’.

GREEN CURRY CHICKEN (MYR 15.80)

One of my must-have items in every Thai restaurant- green curry! The curry served here has a pleasant consistency, rich in flavor and very much ‘friendly’ to the tongue. So those who can’t endure too spicy grubs, this might be a good choice.

Soon, it’s dessert time to round up the feast on a sweet note.

The glorious chocolaty indulgence!THE MADAGASCAR KOPI KAU (MYR 13.65)

Injecting a slightly chic twist here than its peers, diners get to savour this decadent piece of confectionary gratifyingly. The brownie is served warm and very moist, literally melt-in-your-mouth while accompanied by a scoop of homemade gelato, namely Kopi Kau! As depicted by its name, the ice cream is really robust with the coffee flavor and we can’t help but to relish in it even faster! Haha…….

BUBUR PULUT HITAM (MYR 7.30)

Sweet sticky black glutinous rice dessert served with vanilla ice cream. Somewhat oriental elements here, I used to enjoyed the black glutinous rice with red bean cooked by my mom and never failed not to finish it up. Same goes for this homey bowl that equally amuse our palate.

For those who still prefer for some traditional recipe, then here you go;

RED RUBY WATER CHESTNUT (MYR 6.90)

A bowl of homemade rubies that is fragrantly served with julienned jackfruit and ice cream in a milky broth of coconut milk.

Alright, it’s time to have some cooling drinks to wash down the satisfyingly pampered tummies.

ALOE VERA (MYR 9.45)

Instantly reminds me of Korean eumshik drink =)

WILLIAMS PEAR FROM LYON SOUTH OF FRANCE (MYR 12.60)

Stay healthy with this 100% natural fruit republic juices that are made of pure fruit without any additives, colorants nor preservatives.

Signature mocktails may be?

Refreshing non-alcoholic drinks created using lemon grass pandan drink and earl grey tea as their beverage base.

POMEGRANATE POWER (MYR 11.55)

PASSION MANGO (MYR 13.65)

Concocted with some mango fruit bits.

Creating a sustainable platform to impact communities in NEED, has always been the core inspiration that keeps Mango Chili going for more, maintain the service quality whilst receiving support from the generous folks around. So do head over here for a decent and meaningful meal as it’s always happier to give than to take.

For every MYR 20 spent, a less-fortunate kid would be liberated from the tyranny of hunger. A simple gesture does make a huge difference.

PIG OUT CAFÉ  Smile Oct 23, 2015
Categories : Western variety | Restaurant | Burgers / Sandwiches

Quo vadis on a lazy Sunday noon? Let’s enjoy some ‘pigging out’ session with sumptuously inhouse marinated porcine dishes at the aptly named hideout- Pig Out Café!

It’s located somewhat new Parklane commercial center of Kelana Jaya, with most of the food are crafted passionately by Yan, whose won her spurs in previous catering venture that has garnered positive feedback from her clients, hence the brainchild of this café.

The humble establishment boats a homey feel with cheeky piggy-themed bric-a-bracs to enliven the atmosphere. Diners could enjoy honest home-prepared food within a cozy and fuss-free environment. For light eats, go for the promising soup………..

CARROT SOUP (MYR 6)

Served fragrantly with sprinkles of herbs

…………… without further ado, sink your teeth into what could potentially be the best appetizer, roasted pork meat. As if cholesterol can't get better than this, hehe………

POC ROAST (MYR 18) 200g prime belly cut marinated overnight and roasted with chunky cut carrots and potatoes, served with applesauce. Only limited portions are available daily, therefore it’s better to ring up prior to your visit to avoid any disappointment.

Seeking flavor-soaked porchine nosh? Then this supreme succulence certainly fits the bill perfectly. POC CHOPS (MYR 16)

Grilled shoulder chops served with garlic sauce, mashed potato and coleslaw.

Meat is thoroughly marinated and tasted lusciously to the palate, albeit the slightly simple presentation. The creamy mashed potato is good, comes with some light milkiness and not too dry with the equally tart homemade coleslaw too.

Don't miss the restaurant's own-made porky burger that is on par with those big names that are already known to the foodies of Klang Valley.

POC BURGER (MYR 16)

Patty, lettuce, onions, enoki and cheese served with fries and coleslaw.

The meaty patty is very juicy and tender at the same time, imparting its glorious jus when biting them. Apart from that, the portion is well prepared just nice for everyone’s ease of consumption whereby one need not to eat clumsily with all fillings tumbling down as you try to chomp down the huge sandwiched buns decently (=After a satisfying and flavourful feast, it’s time to clear the throat with some refreshing chillers!

PASSION FRUIT FIZZ (MYR 5)

STRAWBERRY FIZZ (MYR 5)

More notable new dishes would be introduced from time to time, so do keep abreast with its page for more of its deliciously made porky rendition.

Cheers for now and Carpe Diem! ❤ℒℴѵℯ❤

GYU-KAKU JAPANESE BBQ Smile Oct 23, 2015
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | BBQ

Bringing you the best from the Land of the Rising Sun, Gyu-Kaku, a Japanese BBQ Restaurant which has garnered various accolade of dining awards, has been whetting the palate of local folks here with its moreish array of quality premium beef as well as tantalizing Japanese dessert. Gracing strategically at the friendly neighbourhood of Tropicana City Mall, Gyu-Kaku welcomes you to a cozy and smokeless sizzling session, where each table is equipped with a down draft system whereby the smoke is sucked in to the bottom of the table, which is a polar opposite to the common Yakiniku restaurants that see smoke sucked up through the vent, making guests’ face and clothes slightly smokey. Hence, no problems even if you are going for a date after the yakiniku session at Gyu-Kaku (= Over here, customers are ensured of a comfy dining experience where customers share and cooked meats by themselves over a flaming charcoal grill while indulging in the camaraderie gleefully within the an ambiance of elegance and conduciveness.

And so, we started off with the recommended appetizers like……….. WAKAME SALAD (MYR 9.90) Greens mixed seaweed and green with Japanese citrus soy dressing. It’s light and refreshing, perfect as the prelude before the mains. And the wakame is also a joyful companion to be served cold this way

HORENSO SALAD (MYR 9.90) Japanese style spinach with crispy garlic and goma sesame dressing. Somewhat more saporous from the former one with the aromatic sauce, its bounteous and crisp leafy greens are equally inviting and health-promoting too. Love the generous helping of the crisp and additive bites of garlics dearly.…………………. or some Japanese staple to first warm your tummy. GARLIC FRIED RICE (MYR 10.90) A quintessential plate of stir-fried rice with grated garlic, served with capsicum and shiitake mushroom, and then topped with great amount of fried garlic as well. Each grain of rice is fluffily enveloped with the butter fragrance, making it more satisfying.

Saw a familiar face here! TOFU CHIGE SOUP (MYR 16.90) Tofu and chicken in spicy kimuchi soup served in hot stone bowl. Chicken meats taste are tender alongside the silken beancurd that makes the whole combo a mouthwatering one. Best enjoyed when served piping hot with a bowl of white rice. Compared to its Korean peers, the jigae soup here is tad sweeter and made more savory. Pretty good though…..

More kimuchi, if you still can't have enough of it (=

Soon, ushering one of the many highlights of the day; charcoal grilled yakitori being one of them.ASSORTED YAKITORI PLATE (MYR 39.90 – 6 SKEWERS) Get ready to relish in the succulence of enoki shabu yakitori, chicken yakitori and asparagus shabu yakitori, all gracefully skewered and lusciously beckoning.

Barbequed- fresh off the grill!

Enoki shabu yakitori is my favourite pick amongst the crowds.

Coming up next is the crème de la crème session of yakiniku! For the meat selection of marinade diners could choose from spicy miso, tare, shio, miso, teriyaki or garlic.

FILLET (MYR 38.90) Undercut of the sirloin of beef that is tender and has a delicate flavor.

Deviating from the conventional thin-cut slices, Gyu-Kaku offers a different enjoyment by presenting them in a cube form, for a much more texturized bites with addictive chewiness. Do remember to cook it properly by flipping the meaty cubes every side while grilling them to ensure an optimum grilling. HARAMI (MYR 20.90) One of the bestseller and popular especially among the fairer sex!

A hit amongst Japanese ladies for its tenderness and low in fat content. It has a leaner meat composition compared to fats, thus explains the skewered preference (=

WAGYU KARUBI (MYR 47.90) Also known as Wagyu Oyster Blade, the quality wagyu beef of marbling 5, easily wins any foodie over with its melt-in-your mouth nuance. The luscious chuck is thickly cut, its flavours and juiciness are simply umami! You really gotta try this out.

CALPIS WATER (MYR 7.90) A common drink back in Japan, the beverage has a light, somewhat milky, and slightly acidic flavor, akin to a plain fermented Yakult. I would say it’s rather an acquired taste to me (=

YUZU FLOAT (MYR 9.90) Here comes the much more acceptable pairing, zesty yuzu sorbet with frizzy soda.

What’s to complete a Japanese meal without their signature sweet craving such as green tea and black sesame gelato?

ICE CREAM/SORBET (MYR 10.90) Double Scoop ice creams to further delights your extra tummy for dessert with flavor to choose from Vanilla, Yuzu (Japanese Citron), Kurogoma(Black Sesame) and Matcha(Green Tea).
And my favourite has always revolving around these two (=

Alright, something new to titillate my ever curious taste bud….. MILK PUDDING (MYR 10.90) Milk pudding topped with soya bean powder and Japanese brown sugar syrup. Thankfully, it’s not that saccharine and I would like to regard it as a healthier choice for the sweet tooth craving. The pudding is velvet and comes mildly milky with each spoonful is teastefully promising

Wow, look, what do we find here, scouts!

S’MORES (MYR 6.90) Graham crackers served with roasted marshmallow and Nutella. A traditional nighttime campfire treat popular in the United States, consisting of a roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham crackers. Indeed one of the easiest and hassle-free BBQ session I’ve had so far (=

Gyu-Kaku offers the fun of “shared plates,” inspiring laughter, conversation, and good times. You can’t help it – with a personal grill installed at every table, everyone instantly becomes an expert cook. The staffs at Gyu-Kaku are friendly, leading you through the night with helpful suggestions. The sounds around you are of parties and laughter - the perfect choice for first dates, families, and catching up with friends.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Restaurant serves halal-certified dishes and the menu includes a fine selection of wagyu beef, seafood, poultry and lamb. So if you are looking for a great time in sizzling without the smoke or to put your cooking talent to test, this is the place to go! There are also affordable set for 2 pax at MYR 128 ; 3 pax at MYR 168 and 4 pax at MYR 218.

Mixed coral lettuce, tomatoes, shredded red cabbage, orange and almond flakes in Epic’s honey mustard dressing. Surprisingly, it doesn’t taste bland but I must say the dressing is a very sapid pairing indeed. The overall flavor has been refreshingly enhanced alongside the sweet oranges amidst the nutty crunch of almonds. I personally find it exceptionally palatably amusing.

Need more protein?

Wholesome interpretation of the Greek souvlaki, but served in wrap instead. It comprises grilled chicken fillet and vegetables with Epic’s unique Eziki sauce- an incredibly appetizing and delicious Greek tzatziki sauce made from blending yogurt, cucumbers, vinegar, dill, lemon and garlic.

Want further scrumptious surprise? Here you go, Gourmet “Flying” Pizza!

3A-545 kcal (MYR 19.80)

Fiery pizza with minced chicken, real mozzarella cheese, onions and caramelized onions.
Named straightforwardly and indeed simply stellar! I would very much liken to describe it aptly as Awesome, Additive and Awe-inspiring!Hope the chef behind this brilliant rendition won’t mind, who has turned the simple and common ingredients such as Apple, Ayam (chicken) and Api (chili) into a bombastic recipe. Kudos!

It was so tasty that we finished up the whole pizza unexpectedly by ourselves, which are usually not the case, haha.

Now who say healthy food won’t taste fabulous and can be executed so convincingly? (=

And what’s more? Fresh juices come just in time to quench the thirst.

RED APPLE HONEY SMOOTHIE (MYR 8.80)

A super nutritious and delicious apple smoothie with fresh yogurt and wild honey. Contains Vitamins C, aids in digestion and de-stressing.

A cool and appetizing juice comprising cucumber, apple, ginger, celery and lemon. Good for nourishing skin and hair and alkalizing your body. It’s a beauty edible tonic in a bottle.

CLASSIC TRIFECTA (MYR 7.80)

A nutritious and refreshing juice mad of carrot. Apple and pear rich in Vitamin A & C, and beta-carotene. Aids in detoxifying, digestion and energy boosting.

AGUA MELLO SMOOTHIE (MYR 8.80)

Epic Pesta Raya Special- A refreshing and thirst-quenching watermelon smoothie with fresh yogurt. It is rich in Vitamins A. B6 and C, and it had anti-inflammatory and hydration properties.

KAMPONG KRAVERS Smile Oct 23, 2015
Categories : Malaysian variety | Café | Sweets/Snack

Welcome to Kampong Kravers, a local establishment serving what’s best loved by Malaysian.

You could expect a variety of authentic Malaysian delicacies made fresh without any preservatives, colouring or artificial flavorings but yet still serving the local delights deliciously.

Been gracing the taste buds of many of us here at its Lot 10 Hutong outlet since Dec 2014, Kampong Kravers is more famously known for its uber crispy and a healthier version of what’s our favourite breakfast other than nasi lemak? It’s curry puffs!

This old family recipe of curry puffs are oven-baked till crispy thus explains the lesser miserable oil dripping fuss that we often encounter and yet still incredibly served up with assorted flavours to whet your discerning palate. As such, it’s best eaten warm once dished up to secure that yummy crunch hot from oven, and yet would not induce any overt guilt.

Foodies could help themselves from mutton massala, apple custard, spicy tuna, durian, sweet potato, spicy anchovy, sardine, cempedak and many more. And yea, there are some interesting new sweet twist being introduced such as the cempedak, which also reminds me of the cempedak cake from Swich Café. Hmmm, how can’t I recall such cheeky varieties during my early childhood yea? (=

You are bound to be spoilt for choices with so much tempting fillings to win your palate over.

Generally they are available in two sizes, either the regular or the XL, both are easy to eat even if you are always on the go as relevant packaging are available for the respective purpose.

And for the city folks especially the busy working people, these ready-to-used homemade pastes would make your meal preparation for the family much easier. It is conveniently packed, using a blend of the freshest ingredients of herbs and spices from a homey recipe, making home-cooked food never been so easy and nutritious. In a short while, you’d see the awesome kick from the sambal paste being used in their savory dishes which we’re about to review later that includes nasi lemak and chicken curry.

Kampong Kravers’s ready-to-use curry paste contains no MSG, no added preservatives, no artificial colouring and 100% Halal.

Other Kampong condiments that call for more Kraving are the Extremely spicy “hot bilis” and Healthy Lemongrass, Ginger & Pandan Herbal Tea, priced at MYR10.50 and MYR 26.40 respectively.

Decent coffee choices are
also available here.

WHITE COFFEE (MYR6.30– Iced/ MYR5.20-Hot) White coffee sweetened with rock sugar.

HONEY LIME+ ASAM BOI (MYR6.30– Iced/ MYR5.20-Hot) Refreshing and thirst quenching. However, tad sweet for me.

SPICED CHAI TEA (MYR6.30– Iced/ MYR5.20-Hot)
Perfect-spiced tea mixed with frothed milk.

Soon time to reveal the much celebrated flaky and healthy puffs, hot from the oven!

XL SPIRAL KARIPAP (MYR3.10 each/ Package: 2 for MYR5.20)

The Xtra Large Karipaps, flavours of curries wrapped in our special spiral flacky buttered pastry! Available in Chicken & Egg, Mutton Masala, Sardine & more flavour to come. Awesome!

REGULAR SPIRAL KARIPAP ( MYR2.40 each or 3 for MYR5.20)

All time favourite. Available in Chicken, Mutton, Sardine, Spicy Anchovy, Chilli Tuna, Mushroom Mayo and Sweet Potato.

SWEET SPIRALKARIPAP ( MYR2.40 each or 3 for MYR5.20)

A sweet twist to your karipap. Available in Cempedak, Durian and Apple Custard.

Love the durian paste! Yum yum.....

NASI LEMAK BASMATI KARI AYAM (MYR10.50)

Malaysian local favourite using high quality and low glycemic index basmati rice for the sugar cautious, served with aromatic kampong chicken curry with potato.

The nasi lemak Basmati comes with sambal chili, crispy anchovies and roasted peanuts. I especially enjoy the rice texture very much with its flavourful taste and fluffiness at the same time. The sambal is also another kick, very addictive! MIHUN BRIYANI AYAM BEREMPAH (MYR10.50)

Briyani Mihun with ayam berempah, sambal condiments.A slight different rendition of the usual biryani which uses rice most of the time, this recipe showcase it in vermivelli style, stir-fried to fragrance and accompanied by the thoroughly marinated house secret recipe of ayam berempah (Spiced chicken). Tender and moist from inner out.
