Ze Yuan Smile Dec 24, 2013

On the way to Genting Highlands, there is a large round-about at the small township of Gohtong Jaya. Besides the popular strawberry farm, there are also some eateries nearby.

We visited Ze Yuan Seafood Restaurant (泽园海鲜楼) which is just walking distance from the strawberry farm, facing the round-about. It is supposed to be famous because we saw many newspaper articles of itself posted on the wall.

We ordered rice with some dishes for 4 persons.

For chicken, we ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken (酸甜鸡, RM15.00). It was nice especially when it just came out of the wok. It had the "fiery" taste.

Next, we ordered the Stir-Fried Pork With Dried Chili Peppers (辣椒干炒肉, RM15.00). This dish was served in a claypot. I think it was a little too salty.

We wanted something non-meat, so the waitress recommended the Minced Meat Beancurd (肉酱豆腐, RM12.00). The portion was enough for 4 persons.

And finally, we had some Stir-Fried Chinese Spinach (清炒苋菜, RM8.00). The dish was mildly-flavored using garlic.

The meal was quite satisfying and affordable.

Good Friends OK Dec 24, 2013

Frequent visitors to Genting Highlands have probably patronized the Good Friends (好友记) restaurant at one time or another. We are not regulars, so this was our first visit to this Chinese restaurant.

There are two sections in the restaurant. The self-service section is free-seating and looks more like a food court; while the table-service section has more extensive menu choices.

We ordered a serving of Claypot Chicken Rice (砂锅鸡饭, RM14.00). We were pleasantly surprised with the amount of braised chicken that came with it. I guess it wasn't as expensive as we thought it would be. The taste was also reasonably good, especially with the Chinese sausage (腊肠) to go with the rice.

We also ordered a bowl of Hakka Mee (客家面, RM12.00). The flat noodles was served with a substantial amount of minced meat, fried egg strips and radish strips. The taste was acceptable.

Finally, we also ordered a serving of Beijing Dumpling (北京饺子, RM6.00). It comes in a plate of four pieces. I think this dish is just so-so.

During peak hours, the waiting crew and kitchen can be extremely slow. If you are in a hurry, the self-service session is a better bet.

Coffee Terrace Smile Dec 24, 2013

Coffee Terrace (咖啡苑) is one of the more popular restaurants in Genting Highlands, mostly due to one reason: It serves buffet.

A word of advice is to arrive as early as possible for a given session, or you will be spending more time queuing up for an available table instead of enjoying your food.

As we woke up early, we decided to head to Coffee Terrace for our morning fix. The place was initially quite empty, but by the end when we left, it was almost full!

The price for buffet breakfast was RM32.00++. This is considered very affordable by Genting standards. The restaurant could have charged RM50.00 but I believe that most people will not be deterred.

In terms of dishes, there were plenty of choices. The serving area is divided in many sections such as "Dim Sum", "Western", "Japanese", "Desserts", "Indian" etc.

As usual, we took a little of everything to minimize the possibility of wastage. Most dishes were tasty, but this could also be attributed to the fact that we were very hungry by then.

Overall, we had a very satisfied breakfast-cum-lunch before heading home.

New Orleans Barbecue Smile Dec 24, 2013

After a long day of sightseeing in Genting Highlands and card-counting in the casino (believe me, it's not worth the time unless you are a high roller), we retreated to the New Orleans Barbecue restaurant in Genting Hotel. This restaurant is accessible only from the gambling section, not the public area. Therefore, you will not expect to see children as they are not allowed to enter the casino anyway.

The New Orleans Barbecue restaurant had a promotion: With a purchase of a plate of Grilled Chicken (RM26.00) or Grilled Beef (RM26.00), the diner has unlimited access to the salad and soup bar. Coffee is also complementary.

Let me say this: The Grilled Chicken and Grilled Beef are very large and should be enough for an average guy. Each plate is served with barbecue sauce as well as several pieces of fried potato wedges.

Not only is the portion great, but so is the taste! Uncle Lim (Jr.) surely knows how to hire a chef.

As for the Salad, there are around 10 types of ingredients for us to choose from. There are also several types of salad dressing, but my favorite is still the Thousand Island.

The soup of the day is Mushroom Soup. But it is quite watered down and not that impressive.
