Star Cafe, Taman Desa OK Jun 24, 2015

Looking for a after-work hangout place? Or a place to chill while listening to live bands, with a drink in hand?

Star Cafe would be the place to be. Star Cafe is a cafe-bistro which occupies a two-storey shop lot here at Taman Desa for 19 years! Star Cafe also has a few more branches across Klang Valley (TTDI, Plaza Damas & OUG).

Tucked away from the busy Old Klang Road , The Star Cafe's branch in Taman Desa has ample parking space (& they even have private parking bays for Star Cafe's patrons!), which is really a plus plus brownies point. One can choose to dine in & chill at the quiet outdoor el fresco area, or inside where live bands will delight your ears & warm up the atmosphere.

At Star Cafe, there will be different live bands playing different genres musics EVERYDAY from 9pm onwards! We were there on a Thursday night & we really enjoyed the performances. Most of the songs played were classic oldies rock which was truly nostalgic. It was nice to see old people getting on their foot dancing & moving up to the stage singing with the bands tongue Picture taken from Star Cafe FB page

The different bands performing at Star Cafe Taman Desa from Monday-Sunday. Time to time Star Cafe will have special band guest performing so do stay tune to their FB page for the latest update! All the chef here have many years of experiences in the F&B industry. You can get a peep on what's cooking in the kitchen by looking through the glass window that separates the kitchen and the dining area!

Fresh Salmon Cerviche RM22

Fresh Salmon Sashimi slices sprinkled with Asian Herbs & finished off with a Citrus Dressing.

A great dish to kick-start our meal, with the sourish citrus dressing that delivers a kick of spiciness. Warning: Super Spicy

Tofu Salad RM18

Silken Tofu & crispy Wonton skin on a bed of Salad Leaves. Served with Peanut & Japanese Sesame Dressing. A Japanese-inspired salad. I love how the contrasting texture of the crispy wonton skin & soft tofu come together in this dish.

Beef Wellington RM59

Juicy Beef Fillet smoothered in a blend of Mushrooms and wrapped in a Puff Pastry. Served with Red Wine Sauce & a side of Steamed Vegetables and Baked Potato

The Beef Wellington is definitely my favourite dish here at Star Cafe. the juicy & succulent beef slices wrapped in the buttery, flaky pastry puff definitely won my heart & taste buds.

Slow-Cooked Lamb Shank RM39

Lamb shank cooked for 4 hours in a red wine marinate. Served with Creamy Mashed Potatoes & Steamed Vegetables.

Hainanese Lamb Shank RM42

Tender Lamb Shank in a traditional Chinese Roots & Wolfberry soup. Served with white rice. Definitely something you can't fund elsewhere. The lamb shank here was also really tender, and the soup tasted really homey. It tasted like a traditional Chinese Herbal Soup (with a huuuuuge lamb shank!)

Chicken Deminoff RM26

Quater Chicken cooked in a cream sauce.

Otak-Otak Snapper FIllet RM32

Traditional Malaysian Otak-Otak Spiced Coconut marinate fillets of Snapper served with Rice

Star Pork Knuckle RM65

Crispy Pork Knuckle served with Sauerkraut & Potato Wedges

Spring Chicken

Fried Half Chicken Served with a side of Fries & Vegetables.

Oyster Fried Kway Teow RM20

Charred wok-fried flat rice noodle with oyster fried in eggs and tiger prawns.

The Oyster Fried Kway Teow was surprisingly quite decent and it was loaded with generous amount of prawns!

Mantis Prawn Yee Mee

The huuuuge size of the mantis prawn!

Bittergroud Fried Glass Noodles RM18

Glass Noodles fried with generous amount of Prawns, Squid, Bitter Gourd & Egg. Not really a big fan of bitter gourd hence I can't comment much on this dish.

Curry Mee

We ended our meal with a sweet note with their homemade Sarawak Layer Cake. Star Cafe has a Sarawakian pastry chef who made these dainty layer cake from scratch here!

Verdict: Decent fusion food generous in portion! Lively performances by live bands at night not to be missed.

Cafe Olle, Desa Sri Hartamas Smile Jun 24, 2015

Categories : Western variety | Café | Desserts

With so many cafe mushrooming around Klang Valley, it is hard for one to make a choice on which cafe to visit. Cafe Olle, a one-year old Korean-owned cafe located at Desa Sri Hartamas is a cafe that is really worth checking out.

Owner Gilbert Kim, who hailed all the way from Korea explained that Olle is the local Jeju dialect word for "a narrow pathway that is connected from street to the front gate of a house".

Cafe Olle has a homey ambiance, with the warm lighting & oak-teak walls & furniture. Staffs here are warm & friendly, and greeted us with utmost enthusiasm as we set foot into Cafe Olle.

Cafe Olle serves a range of coffee & teas. Their range of teas particularly piqued my interest, as Cafe Olle serves Korean Teas such as Grapefruit, Rice Punch & Citron tea that is certainly rare here in the Malaysia!

Coffee Beans are roasted fresh in house here at Cafe OlleCold drip machine

At Cafe Olle, one can enjoy various methods of coffee brewing such as Chemex, Aeropress, Cold Brew & much more!

Coffee lovers can also purchase various coffee maker such as the Aeropress, French Press & pitcher here at Cafe Olle!

Mocha RM12

Smooth, velvety with a fine balance of chocolate-y taste without being overly sweet.

Cappuccino RM10

Vegetarian Pasta with Fresh Italian Herbs RM14

Pasta cooked with Eggplant & Peas served with Parmigiano Cheese & Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

A simple yet delightful dish. I loved how creamy and flavourful the pasta was. The generous serving of vegetables made the dish less sinful for one to enjoy tongue

Spaghetti Meatball Mariana RM14

Chef's special Mariana sauce cooked with Parsley & Beef Meatballs.

Personally I find the Mariana sauce a little too sour for my liking. I liked how soft & tender the meatballs were though, although my makan companions preferred it to be a little more chewy.

Bulgogi Rice RM16

Tender slices of perfectly marinated Grilled Beef served with Rice & Kimchi

My favourite dish at Cafe Olle would certainly be this Bulgogi Rice. The beef slices were tender & flavourful, it goes really well with the fluffy rice. Each bite was filled with utmost satisfaction.

Olle Signature Brunch RM12/15/18 (Choice of 3/5/7)

Pick from a choice of Eggs (Sunny Side Up / Scrambled / Omelette) , Sausage (Steamed / Grilled) , Yoghurt (Mango / Granola) , Tomato (Fresh / Steamed / Grilled) , Chicken Nugget & Baked Beans/ French Fries / Potato Salad / Cooked Vegetables / Cooked Mushrooms / Cooked Kimchi . Served with freshly toasted Ciabatta.

Omelette, Grilled Sausage, Fresh Tomato, Granola Yoghurt,

Omelette, Grilled Sausage, Cooked Vegetables, Fresh Tomato & Granola Yoghurt

Scrambled Eggs, Nugget, Mango Yoghurt, Fresh Tomato, Steamed Sausage

At Cafe Olle, you get to mix & match your favourite combinations of brunch staples at a very affordable price!

Signature Olle Chicken Sandwich RM15

Grilled Chicken Breast served with Torched Mozarella Cheese, Fresh Lettuce, Tomatoe & Chef's Special Spicy Sauce, all sandwiched in between a crusty slice of Ciabatta

The chicken meat was tender & succulent, thanks to the flavourful spicy sauce which gave the sandwich a "kick" & the molten Mozarella Cheese which delivers a smokey & creamy taste. The toasted ciabatta was nice & crusty on the outside, soft & fluffy inside which absorbs the spicy sauce,

Check out Cafe Olle's own coffee plant outside their store before you leave!

Verdict: Great coffee, homey food & warm hospitality from the staffs. A great place for a simple meal & coffee.

Huge Fried Chicken Smile Jun 14, 2015

Hot Star Fried Chicken is renowned for their larger-than-your-face fried chicekn!

Hot Star Fried Chicken now offers a variety of flavour for their fried chicken, ranging from their classic original, cheese, BBQ, Tom Yam, Sour Plum & much more. I tried the BBQ and Tom Yam flavour and I liked the BBQ flavour as it has a smoky aromatic BBQ taste, apart from the crispy skin & juicy, tender chicken meat!

The Tom Yam flavour on the other hand was a little sourish & spicy, perfect for those sour & spicy fans.

The Sour Plum drink was a refreshing & sourish respite from the savoury fried chicken.

Not-So-Impressive desserts Cry Mar 24, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Café | Juices / Bubble Tea / Tea / Yogurt | Ice Cream / Froyo / Gelato | Desserts

Caffe bene, is one of the latest cafe addition to Sunway Pyramid. I was pretty excited about its opening, 1. It seems really promising, with the mouth-watering array of desserts on their menu 2. The amount of money spent on its opening, signifies that the people managing this cafe is really serious on making this cafe a hit 3. That's always been my reaction on a new cafe.

So last Friday after class, I took a bus all the way to Sunway Pyramid to meet up with my besties from high school! We decided to have desserts for lunch because its not every day you can meet up with a friend who thinks the same way as you do.

I liked the design of Caffe Bene, with its rock walls, and comfy cushioned seating. However, the seating area was limited, just a small corridor for the air-conditioned area, And a slightly-wider-than-the-corridor outdoor seating area. My friend & I had to stand for a while after making our order as there was not seats available.

Honey Bread (Garlic & Cheese) RM16
Toasted honey bread with garlic butter & cheese topping.
Taste wise, I thought that it was pretty normal. It wasn't really impressive and I thought that RM16 was way to steep for a simple toast like this :/
Would've been better if they'd substitute some of the cheese sauce with some melted cheese.
Feeling unsatisfied, we decided to try out their signature dessert- Bingsu. Perhaps it'd fare better?
Cookie & Cream Bingsu RM10.90 (S)
Bingsu is a Korean shaved ice dessert, usually topped with fruits & condensed milk. It is an extremely popular dessert in the South Korea. I've actually never heard of it before so I was quite excited to dig in!
On first glance I thought that this desserts looked impressive! The portion too was huge!
However, the Bingsu didn't really hit the spot.
The shaved ice was coarse in texture and it tasted like ice. You'd have to eat the shaved ice with the whipped cream/ice-cream (not really sure which was it) which was tad milky to my liking or the shaved ice is just..well ice! Thought that the cookie crumbs topping didn't really fit the dessert too as it tasted a little out of place.

I didn't really enjoyed the desserts there. Perhaps due to the difference in preference. Perhaps the Koreans love their desserts that way?
And because of the limited seating, we didn't get to devour our desserts slowly as there were too many customers, waiting for us to finish our dessert to "prowl" for our seats.
On another note, service was pleasant =)

Meteora  OK Mar 24, 2014
Categories : Western variety | Café | Burgers / Sandwiches | Sweets/Snack

Hipster-styled cafe is recently becoming the "thing", and it is now slowly manifesting the market. My neighborhood Subang Jaya has joined in the bandwagon, finally- Introducing a new hipster cafe in Taipan Business Centre- Meteora Cafe

Located at the corner lot opposite to Murni Mamak, Meteora is very easy to spot with its distinctive dark signage & bright lighting from the inside.

Americano RM7

Meteora is a self-service cafe, where patrons are required to order & make their payment at the counter & the food ordered will be delivered to your seat promptly by their friendly waiters. Meteora menu is still quite limited for the time being as they are still fairly new. Basic things were found on the menu such as cakes, churros, drinks, & main course such as burgers and pastas.

Ample seating were available inside Meteora, and patrons get to choose to sit at their comfy sofa, basic wooden table & chairs or the bar & stool (:

The interior was really vintage, and quirky at the same time. Can't help it but to admire the cute little decorations & wall arts.

Cafe Latte RM10
The Latte was okay. Not outstanding, but definitely suffice to curb ones' caffeine cravings.

The americano was fine. Served at the right temperature, along with a piece of caramelized sugar biscuit.
Love the caramelized sugar biscuit that accompanies the coffee. It has a pleasant aromatic taste, & was crunchy in texture. The sweet biscuit and the bitter coffee complements each other perfectly, creating a bitter-sweet aftertaste.

Americano RM7

Churros with Chocolate Dip (3) RM5
Deep fried dough fritters, coated with icing sugar & cinnamon powder, served with a choice of chocolate dip or salted caramel.
The churros have a soft & chewy centre. However, I felt that Meteora has over-seasoned their churros with cinnamon, which tasted tad unpleasant.
The chocolate dip on the other hand, was way too diluted, I could barely taste the chocolate
Overall, Meteora Cafe has a nice, cosy & warm ambiance which was really welcoming. The staffs were warm & friendly. But food wise, I felt that it could be better.
